Well according to the profile button anyway.

We all know there's been stacks of talk about Ports decision to let Stevens go in the draft. There's two sides to the decision, those that support the clubs stance and those that dont.

You know what the been biggest indicator so far?? The goddam profile button. Over 90% of the posters saying we were idiots are pies followers. Very few of the other clubs supporters have been against us on the decision.

Maybe they just like the sounds of their own keyboards or something.

You know if we made the trade for pick 17 and some unnamed/unproven hack, there'd be just as many posts from just as many collingwood deluded bragging how they butt-raped us by trading us crap for a megastar. But because they missed out (yet again, as usual at this time of the year) they all think we made a big mistake. (and how Stevens was overrated anyhow)

And they think it's cos we hate them.....

Damned if we do and damned if we dont.

**** them. Just keep on walking. If they were as serious about getting him to their club as they kept claiming, then they wouldnt have offered their crappy little deals. "We tried to get a third party involved to obtain a higher pick for Port."

Well obviously you didnt try hard enough. See you in round six.

I can take the crap from Collingwood supporters, after all it's the only thing they do well. What I can't stand is that self-righteous prick Max Stevens saying we didn't make an effort to trade Nick and got burnt. Listen Max, you were the one who told us we could trade with anyone and when Collingwood came up with s*hit we gave them the arse(pun intended) because we thought we could trade with Melbourne or Carlton. If you don't know what your own clients wany then you're in the wrong job.

I'm just wondering, how much did Carlton know about this? After all, they will now pick up Nick Stevens for nothing, and their record on tampering with AFL rules isn't the greatest.

I thought that maybe I was the only one that had thought of this. Glad I am not.

I am proud of the club for sticking to principals but I still think that the AFL stink to high heaven over this. The rules are just laughable that this can happen.

I think that we should demand a compensation pick or something. The AFL demand that all clubs take part in the draft so should make sure that all clubs are able to get compensation for developing players.

Sorry I forgot that the AFL are guardians of the game.

No single factor conspired to cause the eventual sending of Nick to the pre-season draft. There were effectively a number of issues that led to this. Each factor had a varying degree of influence. They were:

1. Carlton coming out immediately on the front foot declaring that they were willing to pay Nick $500,000 per year.

2. Nick making it obvious that his "preferred" destination was Collingwood.

3. With point 2 in mind, Collingwood proceeded to offer less than Nick is truly worth (how much less is up for debate)

4. Port's unwillingness to let Nick go to strengthen a club that has finished above them the past two years. If it were Richmond or Geelong that Nick had chosen, I feel Port may of cut their losses and accepted an inferior trade.

5. Jade Rawlings also being on the open market (to a lesser extent)

Max Stevens maintains that Nick would have considered any offer put before him, but insists that no offers were made. Let us take him on his word on this point, as whether true or otherwise it had no influence on the eventual outcome. What MAX neglects to acknowledge was that there was no possible way for a fair offer to be put because of the collected influence of the above 5 factors.

Firstly, the majority of level headed people would consider Nick to be worth a maximum of $350,000 per year, not as Carlton offered. The fact that the offer came out so early in the piece actually convinced Nick he may have been worth that.

In doing so, Carlton effectively eliminated Melbourne (and pretty much everyone else, except Collingwood) from the equation as, irrespective of any acceptable offer Melbourne made to Port, they would have concluded that Nick would not of accepted it as they could not match Carlton's.

This left Collingwood (and the Bulldogs) as Carlton’s only obstacle to getting Nick. It is obvious that Nick would have accepted a contract from Collingwood whether they could match Carlton's offer or not. Fortunately for Carlton, Collingwood proceeded to treat Port with contempt re their inferior offers.

All pressure on Carlton to make an offer to Nick was further diminished by the knowledge that it was highly unlikely that Port and Collingwood would arrive at a deal. Also, the threat by the Bulldogs was becoming less of an issue as it became known that Rawlings could also be on the open market.

If Port is to be criticised in any way it may be for their dealing on the last day of trading. It would of been in there best interest to DECLARE loudly to Carlton (without it getting back to Nick) that Nick would be off to the Pie's for their inferior offer if they didn't get off their rear ends and offer Nick a contact, and Port their No.2 pick (after all that was all they could offer to them). Of course, sadly Nick could have vetoed the deal in any case, but at least an offer would have been on the table and Port would have had some additional leverage to go back to Collingwood with (ie. Carlton has made an offer).

In nutshell the alignment of the planets were always against Port getting a fair deal for Pretty Boy Nick….

Richmonds or Geelongs first round pick was a lot tastier than Collingwoods at 17, but not as sweet as Carltons. Still I would have taken them....

Poet from Port,

At last a hypothesis that is reasoned and logical. Very well put. I agree entirely. I think all involved have been suckered by Carlton.

I hope that Stevens now asks for heaps of money, and gets it, so that others in the Carlton camp demand a lot extra when next negotiating their contract. As the saying goes, what goes around comes around.

There would be nothing sweeter than to see Rawlings place a value of $800,000 on his head so he can go to the Kangaroos and then for Stevens to end up at the Bulldogs.

Exactly. I wonder if Stevens works this out (it was reported in another thread that Rawlings was "setting his price" by mid-week) and re-signs with Port.

I'd take him back in a flash, (on trade value not ethics) but there'd be a lot of unsettled dust till trade period next year. And then maybe Collingwood would come up with the goods.
