The Tendulkar runout, for anyone that didn't see it;

The way some of the Indians have been complaining, I thought Lee must have attempted to murder Tendulkar. Instead, the footage shows that Lee basically goes to field the ball, and then stops when he realises another fielder is on to it. He doesn't even look at the batsman. Tendulkar has to side step maybe two paces.

What really surprised me is that Tendulkar is just ambling along. He barely breaks out of a trot, and makes no attempt to dive. Warner, on the other hand, fielded with pure desperation.

IMHO, it just really sums up this summer. The Indians just weren't hungry enough. And rather than work harder, they'd rather gripe and blame others.

i couldn't believe they had a whinge about that.

1) the contact was completely accidental
2) it was about as minor contact as one could get
3) if tendulkar really put in, floored it and slid his bat, he most probably would've made it

It looked like he unintentionally got in his way. I'm really not sure what the rules are on the matter. The Hussey handling the ball incident probably didn't help the anti-whingers.

Yeah there a bit of a joke at the moment India. They must bring forth a new generation of cricketers who are hungry. Maybe a new coach as well.

You compare this to Sri Lanka where i've seen some really impressive full length dives from some of their batsman to get in.

hussey was very very lucky.

inzy was out obstructing the field and i think he had more right to be upset than hussey did if huss were given out.

as far as i know the rule hasn't been changed regarding obstructing the field, but i could be wrong.

the only two things that could've saved huss was 1) he was almost certainly going to make it home and 2) the ball was probably going to hit him regardless of the action he took

but i'm not sure either of the two can save you. inzy was in his crease so was 100% not getting run out, and likewise the ball was going to hit him regardless of what he did....

People should check out the rules on obstructing the field... particularly some of the Indians having a good whinge. The rules specifically exclude using the hand... I assume because using the hand is covered under the rules for handling the ball. So Hussey was never going to be ruled out for obstructing the field.

And as far as handling the ball goes, a batsman cannot be given out handling the ball if he is doing so to avoid injury. Given that the ball looked like it was going to potentially hit Hussey, I'm assuming that was the umpire's ruling.

People will argue that he was lucky, and maybe he was. But the rules are pretty clear. IMHO, it's disappointing that Dhoni has basically come out and said that the umpires were wrong. Firstly, he should get himself acquainted with the rules. And secondly, he should know better than to publicly criticise the umpires. He should probably cop a fine, but realistically, that would quite possibly trigger World War III.

fair enough. didn't realise that you can't be out obstructing the field for use of the hand.

as for handled the ball, he was still pretty lucky. just reading on the MCC site now and yeah as you say the only thing that saved him was the line "a batsman will not be out under this Law if he handles the ball to avoid injury."

i was pretty sure regarding rules like hit the ball twice, obstruction and handled ball it is of no consequence whether the batsmen was going to make his ground, or was already in his ground and that's true.

benefit of the doubt probably, but only just. still pretty lucky.

tendulkar has showed for large parts of the summer an unwillingness to get his hands dirty. things like stopping the ball with his legs on numerous occasions. this is just more of that. tendulkar dive? too worried about getting pitch dust on his shirt.

Personally thought that Tendulkar should have been recalled; left a really bad taste in my mouth.

It wouldn't have surprised me if Lee moved into his way on purpose. Not calling him a cheat per se, but he's so damn competitive he would do anything to get the team ahead in the game.

It was a poorly judged single.

It was a poorly run single.

The contact was minor and certainly wasn't instigated by lee.

It was out, it was the batsmens job to avoid the fielder, if it wasn't anybody other than tendulkar this would be a non issue.

Hope this lot don't conjure up a miracle and make the finals, would be nice to see the back of this overpaid hype machine and it's crybaby superstars.

Lee in no way tried to obstruct Tendulkar. I highly doubt he would have even been aware of his presence given the atmosphere at the ground and state of the game at the time (i.e. he would have been engrossed in watching Warner hit the stumps after stopping his attempt to field the ball). As others have said, as soon as Sachin had to deviate even in the slightest, he gave up on grounding his bat or diving and instead had a whinge.

Symptomatic of India's entire summer. It's a good thing the Sri Lankans are over here.

If you watch the replay of Tendulkar's run out it is very plain to see that Tendulkar contributed to his own downfall by the line he took when running. He actually ran on an angle which took him towards Lee. If he had run in a direct line from where he started to the other end there would have been no drama

If it wasn't Tendulkar, if he didn't have a sook and also wasn't so desperate for the 100th century by coming out of ODI retirement, it wouldn't be that big of an issue.

Having said that, do we know for certain who he was complaining too? May of been to Gambir for taking the single.

I think the footage from behind the bowler says it all. About 3rd replay. He did not even have to sidestep. Slight veering of course with no slowing down. Might have run a whole lot harder as he was at about three quarter pace. Out in my opinion.

Hussey is a whole lot harder and I don't think it is an action to be encouraged.

Definitely shouldn't be encouraged.

Saved purely by the fact the ball was going to hit him anyway; IMO.

When it happened live, I thought we should've withdrew the appeal.

Seeing the replays, no problems with it.

Lee didn't intentionally get in his way - Tendulkar actually ran into the pitch TOWARDS Lee, and then veered back out away from him.

Not only that, if he'd actually sprinted (not jogged) and made an effort to ground his bat, he would've been in anyway.

Were you watching the game? At no point could Lee have known where Tendulkar was, his eyes were on the ball the entire time. He was so damn competitive that he went to his right to field the ball... But then realised Warner was going to get there first.

If Tendulkar really cared, he could have made his ground.

I was watching the game, clearly.

Lee would have known which line Tendulkar was running down; I was merely speculating that it was a bit of gamesmanship to allow Warner the time to run out Tendulkar.

In either case, I see it as the batsman being able to get home in time but due to the actions of the bowler (whether deliberate or not) he was unable to make his ground. As such, the appeal should have been withdrawn as the wicket was not taken in a genuine manner.

Yes, perhaps Sachin could have made more of an effort to get around Binga, I won't dispute that. But even so I think he copped the wrong end of the stick with this one.

It's just my opinion; I'm clearly in the minority though. Interesting to note that according to the cricinfo commentary a few of the Aussie commentators thought Sachin should have been recalled, whereas the Indian commentators thought the dismissal was fair. It is a strange world sometimes!

How would he have known that? If he had of been guessing that, he would have stayed on the pitch... You wouldn't predict a batsman running from off strike to be that far off the pitch!

In either case mate I think he should have been recalled; you think differently, and to be fair you are probably right.

If he hadn't been interrupted he wouldn't have been dismissed, that's all. The batsman can not obstruct the fielder, but the fielder can obstruct the batsman? Whether or not it is intentional I just don't think it is a genuine wicket.

I see what you're saying, but he almost CHOSE to be interrupted.

If he'd taken the single properly, he would've been home regardless.

Somebody posted one featuring Brendon Julian - that one was blatant obstruction and the appeal should've been withdrawn.

This one, yet again, Tendulkar didn't appear to care and gave up at the first excuse.

Seriously, im no lee fan but a bowler standing basically still with his back to the runner is involved in gamesmanship? but the batsmen who can see everything and still decided to barge into the unsighted bowler is the victim?

This whole incident seems typical of this current indian team, they know any minor controversy gets a billion people aiming their guns at the mean foreigners and gives their woeful underperforming indian seniors a get out of jail free card.
