North, crazily, might be a top-eight hope
Expect anything. That's what the 2017 season taught us, but still we refused to believe North Melbourne could be anything but a bottom-four side this year. We know all about the Shinboner spirit and that the Roos retain several top-liners, including one of the game's best forwards in Ben Brown. But their midfield was supposedly pedestrian – outside of a select few – and the depth was largely non-existent. How wrong we have been so far, and particularly on Sunday. Sure, Hawthorn came with a rush to blot North's copybook somewhat by the final siren, but don't sleep on the Roos' first-half exploits and ability to grit out the win. Eight different players won multiple clearances, led by Ben Jacobs' seven. Top-five draft pick Luke Davies-Uniacke was rested this weekend; Sam Wright, who, like Jacobs didn't play any senior football last year because of injury, is another who could return next week; and Taylor Garner made his season debut in the VFL on Saturday. North Melbourne now boasts a 3-2 record and has given itself a chance to do something this season. Doomsayers be damned. - Marc McGowan

The next time someone comes at you with the, "well North aren't that young y'know" argument based purely on numbers:

Interesting graphic, where did you get that from?

I actually count 14 debutants. Durds, Larkey ,Hibberd, LDU, VW, Mountford, McKay, Preuss, Zurhaar, Nielson, Williams, Anderson, Hartung and Hrovat.

But based on those stats you've given:

What it shows is that at least 9 teams have more average games being played per debutant. That means although we are playing a lot of new guys, they aren't getting much of a run. 8 of them have played less than 10 games each.

The 14 also includes:
Williams: 50+ games before coming to us
Anderson: 10 games before us
Hartung: 50+
Hrovat: 30

So, I'm not sure your counter argument stacks up, especially based purely on the numbers you have presented!

Like most things in life, it depends on on how you look at it or spin it or whatever. Right now, I think Brad, whether by design or sheer good luck, has got things right. Everything backfired on him two years ago. Hopefully, “karma” will see things fall his way this year. Bottom line, our older players are performing out of their skins, which is permitting our younger players to get invaluable schooling in the VFL. Also, the young guys know they will get their chance soon enough because of our age demographic. Right now, we’re in a very sweet spot. Having said that, a bit of bad luck could tear the veritable arse out of everything quick smart. I present Richmond and the Buldogs as living proof of what can happen - both sides of the coin. Less than 2 years ago, we beat the Tigers by 70+ points!

Suddenly, is there honestly any team in the comp we can't beat on our day with a full list. Once again, premiership will be decided by fitness IMO.

Suddenly our win against Sydney looks pretty damn good. Can only wish we can back it up. Not confident at all though.
