I reckon go one elite midfielder kid in the draft with our first pick, and then maybe look to trade on the Brisbane first rounder for a quality mature midfielder. Then we can get Budarick as well for a cheaper price as well.
Yeah this approach makes sense to me, especially if we end up with one of the top two.

Hopefully Evans, who knows exactly how clubs operate, has his team out there with their ears to the ground and ready to go if there's any inkling of a quality mid open to moving.

I kind of feel like, aside from the youth on our list, this rebuild is going to need to find two elite mids over the journey.

The team should purely use the way they embarrassed the Gold Coast in their pitiful performance last home game against Brisbane as motivation. Ladder irrelevant.
While I agree that the boys shouldn't need extra motivation, moving into a position that keeps the dream of playing finals alive is always going be a carrot that every player craves. The boys know they need to win this one to keep the dream alive and that should be obvious in the way they play from the very first bounce. Almost every player in the AFL will tell you the reason they play is to compete in finals and the ultimate goal is to win enough finals to say you're a Premiership player. That has always been a massive motivator for any footballer.

Two elite mids are definitely required plus not losing the core of the young players - Bowes, Lukosius, Rankine, King, Ainsworth etc. That'll be the hard part.

As a team we've become more consistent.
We need some of the young guys to begin to be more consistent either intra-game or inter-game.

Ainsworth has been pretty good this year - but has really only had 3 good games (Demons, Lions, Blues) so far. Probably only had ~6 good games last year.

Sexton pretty inconsistent - feel like teams been putting a bit more time into him after his good start and he's finding it difficult. Needs to make sure his defensive pressure is there as a base for his game if offensively its not coming.

Peter Wright needs to be consistent within games. Started so well this week but drifted out of the game and had pretty little impact in the forward line (although was good in the ruck) in the second half.

Jack Martin - say no more.

I'm one of Jack Martin's biggest fans and often look to see if he's doing different roles that might impact his offensive work, but alas all I see is a guy trying but failing to have an impact

If we're a better team, I'd love to see him just play half forward.
Can take a mark
Can draw a free kick
Can crumb
Can finish (sometimes)

Generally agree with most comments re: Demons game. This week I reckon we saw some real growth though from guys like Corbett, Lukosius, Ainsworth, Macpherson.

Plus, I’ve never been a fan, but Holman has won me over. He’s not a stats guy, but he does lot of grunt body work, and never loses a contest.

We need more out of Miller/Miles. We’ve got too many of the same sort of midfielders. That’s why Ainsworth is important as he’s cleaner with the ball.

Also Corbett need to go to CHF, and have Wright FF/Ruck.

I think some stats are favourable for Holman
Since Rd 13 last year

18 games
17 goals
0.5 GA
4.1 score involvements

4.3 tackles
1.5 tackles inside 50

Not bad for a guy who will also compete in the air and can take a contested mark.
He's turned into a very important player for us

For comparison those Holman stats compare favourably with bigger names this year

- Wingard, Rayner, Gowers, Hayward, Liam Ryan,

Even if we aren't a better team, I'd play him as a half forward specialist only and hope we can turn things around before he decides to head south as part of our annual migration!

I was pondering player losses and retention over the past weeks and have come to the conclusion that the Suns have been absolutely dismal in the area of player negotiation and maximizing value for trades.
We have lost many of our best and potentially valuable young players over the past years and I am really hoping someone out there with better access to figures and history might be able to help.
Almost every other AFL club has benefited by our lack of ability and hardness in negotiating and this has to stop.
Let’s take a look at the bigger losses we’ve had.

HAWTHORN:
Jaeger O’Meara – traded dismally – who did we get for him – a player that would now sit in the top 10 of the Hawks rebuild.
PORT:
Charlie Dixon – I know he wasn’t exactly a role model but we traded him for who? Now is the central big body in the Power’s forward set up, when not injured.
RICHMOND:
Prestia – not a team player for us but we should have negotiated better – who did we get?
Tom Lynch – OK, the AFL gave us Pick 3 but who did we get from Richmond.
FREMANTLE:
Harley Bennell – at the time had a massive upside but hasn’t happened. That’s not our fault so who did we get in return?
ESSENDON:
Adam Saad – the key to the Bomber’s attacking thrusts from half back. Gave him away for peanuts – who did we get?
GEELONG:
Gary Ablett – Currently considered a chance for All Australian and Brownlow! Who did we get in return for one of the best players of all time?
Caddy – too long ago and hadn’t really shown his worth but what did we get for him
Zac Smith – Hasn’t performed but at time was considered a potential top ruckman. Who did we get?
NORTH MELBOURNE:
Aaron Hall - Not sorry to see him go but did we get anything or anyone worthwhile for him?
BRISBANE:
Jarryd Lyons – Did we get a trade pick or player? Gave him away too quickly and for what gained?
MELBOURNE:
Stephen May – Not sorry to see the end of him either but did we gain or lose from the deal?
WEST COAST:
Matera – Currently an early pick in their team selection and even made the State of Origin ‘phantom’s team in the last few days. Who did we get for him?
There’s probably a few I’ve missed but these would be the ones that got away.

JOM -> pick 10 + pick 2nd round -> Bowes
Ablett -> pick 19 -> Powell
Bennell -> pick 20 -> Fiorini
May -> pick 6 -> King
Prestia -> pick 6 -> Ah Chee?

Fair call. I don’t think we’ve done badly, maybe slightly taken advantage of here and there. There’s also no point focusing on the past with players and list managers who are no longer here. In terms of decisions (eg. get rid of Hall & Kolodjashnij) and strategy, draft selections and now retaining players, the new regime led by Craig Cameron have done a super job! I have total faith in the process they’re going through. We’ll be finals competitive within 2 seasons, and anything can happen from there. Better players will come to play under Dew, and things will snowball.

Not to forget, we got basically 3 free 2nd picks last year as mature pre-draft selections Collins, Burgess, Corbett - all looking great long-term prospects. I hope we can get 2 more the same quality players in 2 weeks during mid-season draft.

id argue bar 1-2 players most of them have been a disappointment for their new teams.
it may not seem like we got much but deals like the bennell, dixon and prestia seem pretty solidly in our favour. its more a question of the draft team at the time and how they used those picks which in hindsight has been poor.
