Just wondering if the $1.7m we are supposedly prepared to pay TDK and others like JDG and Weitering, in the past, has had a negative effect on our more senior players. Players like our skipper, who has given his all through lean years, and who is not, relatively speaking, in the upper echelons of the pay scale must feel slighted and this is filtering down to the group generally. $1.7m really throws the worth and value of other players right out of whack.

Think you have to stop looking at that number from a current point of view. It will be a normal number for stars (which we think TDK could be) in 3 years time (his prime you'd think).

Additionally, they're professionals, they know how the industry works. They're expected to do their job for whatever pay they've negotiated with their agents.

Jack Steele isn’t worth $700k, let alone $1.7m. Unless he’s on $500k or less, he’s overpaid and should be thankful he gets his match fee every single week - regardless of form.

This is a bit disrespectful. He didnt sign the contract this year or last year did he. Was fair when he signed it and like most contracts, its overpriced by the end. He has been a stalwart of the club.

If our current players are more concerned about the money they make than improving our list then they can find themselves somewhere to play. We’re not a retirement fund.

OK i know what you're saying.
But if you HAVE to spend money on players but you want to keep a lid on it , it makes sense to be a retirement fund.

Say you got all your young players signed up and no big players from other clubs want to come.
You might have to spend , say $500 000 more to meet the minimum.
If you gave the extra to a young guy, when it came time for the next contract, they'd want at least as much again.
Give it to an old , soon to retire guy without a long contract, and you know you get the cap space back as soon as their contract is up. They can either retire then, or put up with whatever their new contract is.

Anyway i don't think the players are more concerned about the money, you made that up.

Actually the club is a retirement fund. Footballers have a very limited career span so they have to make as much money as they can while they are still playing. Very few players have the capability to create a second career for themselves while still playing and even less can turn football into a full time career post their playing days.

For a 30 year old to retire with no income for say 45 to 50 years he would need at least 3 million in the bank. If he has a wife and a couple of kids that money would give him an average middle class lifestyle.

Not entirely true.
For anyone with a long term career, the AFLPA ensures there are mechanisms to financially support them post career. Similarly, most players who play into their 30s have been able to establish networks that can support them post career, should they need to.

If any of our current list is upset they arent being offered the money they want then they need to go and earn it, ala NWM. Overpaying under performing players is what has gotten us in this mess in the first place. There would be a 3-4 guys on our list who are as good as those we’ve been linked to publicly and each of them have been paid inline with their performance over the years.

$1.7m for TDK will be the going rate for a gun in 12 months time, and is still less than 10% of the total cap space spent on one player. Compare that to when Riewoldt was on $1m and the cap was under $8m per season. It’s all relative.

It will not be the going rate for a good player which is what TDK is not a gun. It won't be the going rate for someone who finished 7th in their clubs best and fairest. Wilkie won't be on 1.7m but he is as good if not better than TDK. I doubt we will offer 1.7m to NAS, again as good if not better.
The problem is paying a player of the standard of TDK league leading money. He is a good player not an out and out champion but we are going to pay him like he is Dusty in his prime. He won't even be our best player but will be paid like he is the second-coming. The good news however is I am sure he will accept it as he is not getting anywhere near that from anyone else.

Nah.

1.7m is about to be the going rate.

JS at the moment probably feels he's overpaid.

Salary cap in 2017 (Dusty’s peak) was $12.45 million.

2025 is $17.76 million.

2026 is $18.44 million.

Gotta spend the money somewhere, no point inflating current salaries of players who aren’t performing

So I’m reading that if TDK comes, we are offloading Marshall ?

Unless we are getting 2 prime mids in exchange (which I highly doubt) then what kind of dumphukery is this ?
Arent we supposed to be building A grade depth ?

Honestly if that happens and all we get is some random late first or early 2nd round picks I will just give up on this club. Being born in 1967, it will be the universes way of telling me that I won’t see a flag in my lifetime .

I think a few players at our club have inflated ideas of their value due to the high esteem to which they are held to at our club. Jack is one of them, Sincs another, and there are others. If you asked most people who don't support the Saints what they thought of Steele, Sincs and most of our top seniors, it would probably be similar to what we would say if asked what we thought of a player like Adam Treloar or at best Josh Dunkley. If Steele ever thought he was close to an MVP at our club, you'd have to say that is more a reflection on the state of our list than himself, and a true leader would absolutely welcome a big-money signing as long as he is the right type of player and personality. (I'm not a massive fan of Steele as a leader, but I do at least think he is enough of a leader to recognise that.)

The question is: is TDK that player?

Why on earth would he have no income for the rest of his life? Would we want anyone that aimless and lazy in our team?
