Just want to get a few opinions on here because I think this s**t is becoming a bit ridiculous now. I'm honestly disgusted over how many of my own generation (I'm 29 years old,) are pushing for socialism. Is it the universities pushing this? Is it due to social media's U.S left bias? Are we just going to keep repeating the idiot cycle that's been done to - literal - death. Why is this new rhetoric of "real socialism hasn't been tried yet," becoming so abundant? It's one of the more idiotic things I've ever heard - how often do you hear "real nazi-ism just hasn't been tried yet"?

It's downright scary that this is becoming a thing again. All one has to do is look at Venezuela and Cuba right now for * sake. I thought 5G was meant to scramble our brains? What's the point - seems to me that some of our young brains are already scrambled.

Thoughts?

What is your idea of socialism?
Who do you think is pushing it?

Do you think Medicare is socialism?
Would you like all forms of socialism removed from Australia?

I'm talking about a socialist society - aka the death of capitalism - aka the dream of communist utopia, the type your currently seeing being pushed by the extreme left politicians.

No; I do not consider Medicare etc socialism - it is a government service and not at all what I'm referring to. We need to stop interchanging those words for different things.

Who is actually pushing for that? Do you have a link?

How is Medicare not socialist? Putting greater social needs as a priority for society?

Can you please share your idea of socialism?

Man, I'm super lazy I'm not going to go searching for links for you - you can do some research yourself, or don't - I really don't mind. I didn't say it's not a socialist service, comprehension mate - I said it's not "socialism". I'm clearly talking about Socialism as a whole imposed on society. It's a pretty simple post to comprehend, I laid out exactly what I mean by socialism.

You made a thread on it, so I thought it might have meant something to you.

It's an opinion that's shared pretty regularly. I've rarely seen it progress further than a thought bubble.

I just wanted to hear some thoughts of other people who've been looking/reading on it. I'm not meaning to be a prick but when I converse with people I want to converse not do homework for them. :p

Do you follow U.S politics? It's a little bit grander than just a thought bubble right now.

Well said mate.

Don't worry about those commie eggheads. It is just a phase they're going through. In the words of some smart bloke:

“If a man is not a socialist by the time he is 20, he has no heart. If he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain."

May I also introduce you to the teachings of Sir Jordan Peterson.

Oh spicy quote, I like it. Although those conservatives have a few views I dislike too! I'm quite central but I do tend to lean more right.

Love me some Jordan Peterson, but I guess that's because I'm an "angry, mean, white man". That's how it goes yeah?

Some just throw the term Socialism around like its all about Stalinism, gulags of having to wear Mao suits.

Socialism roughly defined is about the communities (ne parties) ownership of production & distribution of goods & resources.

The hard right seem unable to differentiate the old technical definition of Socialism from the desire for more even opportunities in society, to benefit society as a whole.

No one except maybe a few nutters are taking about aspects of socialised medicine & my favourite, Education equity.

Fear tactics just mean that people suffer bad health outcomes & the community as a whole suffers.

We have a mixed healthcare system. Government Medicare & a variety of private health insurance companies . On a world scale, Australia ranks quite highly in health efficiency. The US by comparison spends nearly twice per person as Australia but its 'efficiency' is so poor that the US is very low in the rankings of healthcare efficiency in the Western world & areas where ratings are given.

The US is still blinded by its cold war mentality. Sad. So many suffer because of some 'fake' philosophical stupidity.

I think most of us in Australia support our "mixed" system, and see it as superior to the US. The concern on the right is of the full blown "real socialism has never been tried" crowd, who do exist. There's a couple here on BF.

We do have the "Socialist Party" in Australia, and elements within Labor and the Greens who have spoken at Marxist conferences etc. We see comments like "destroy capitalism" frequently on social media. It's not free healthcare that is the fear, it is the potential movement towards 100% genuine socialism.

Perhaps the fear is overblown, just as the fear of creeping nazism is. But conservatives generally want to condemn this sentiment wherever it appears, given the death and destruction it would inevitably lead to.

Again, I think 'socialism' label, as applied, is just a smoke stream for the greedy corporates, like big 'pharma', to suck the guts out of a relatively 'sick' country & persuading them that they are saving them from Communism. And they swallow that!!.

The current US system is responsible for a lot death on its own with very little Government input.

The current Capitalist economy we are entrenched in is unsustainable. It’s a debt driven economy ... 90% of money is created through fractional lending... In fact anything that is sustainable is the enemy of the current capitalist system we are in.
With out population growth the economy will collapse ....
with out “growth” the economy will collapse.
With out banks creating debt through lending the economy collapses...

Just look at the block sizes now being sold... just enough to fit a house on and nothing else... so people can’t become more self sufficient. They must consume.
This system will kill it self,.., it’s unsustainable.
I’m not sure what replaces it.

Conflating socialism and communism to a Jordan Peterson video in 9 posts.

Another s**t thread.

Do you see people voting communist? The answer's no, but that won't stop scumbags from comparing the Greens and that dastardly Bill Shorten and his wicked Labor party to the Soviet Union.

Most Australians don't believe big business need things made easier for them or life made harder for the poor. Every political party besides the Coalition basically agrees.

Stop conflating the 'left' with socialism.

I'm not, I said extreme left. I constantly get called a leftie for half my views. Stop being so emotional and have a real discussion... 'Moderator'.

Very few people are pushing for socialism in the Soviet or Chinese sense. Those who are, are just fringe nutters really.

This whole "socialism" scare is one of the great red herrings of current political discourse.

Pushing for strong social welfare systems is not the same as pushing for a Stalinist style society.

Just to be clear: You're OK with the current mixed economic model (Social democracy, welfare state, income redistribution via tiered taxation etc), but are opposed to full blown socialism (State/ Communal control of the means of production)?

Your gripe is that 'a lot of people/ politicians' are pushing for the latter?

Even the most pro Socialist politicians out there (Bernie Sanders, Corbyn and Di Natalie) arent advocating for the latter are they?

Only corbyn is a socialist. The greens are now fascist, the Democrats in America officially have no label. Theyve been destroyed by the arms industry puppet Clinton.

Sanders a millionaire whose wife has comitted massive fraud.

Ideally society should be based on a framework of empathy and compassion with personal responsibility as a cornerstone so for me that would be a style of "socialism".

Unfortunately our current rabid constant consumerism based economic system does not allow for this approach, maybe one day but I don't see it happening in my lifetime.

As the gap widens between the rich, the poverty stricken and the working struggling poor I see an eventual collapse of the current western capitalist system, hopefully we don't pivot in the wrong direction when this happens.... again not in my lifetime.

Rubbish. Everyone is better off in a capitalist system, especially the poor.

The only thing poisoning capitalism in western society is big government.

It depends on your perspective, your environment and what you value in life. I don't believe in preaching to people how they should feel and how they should be grateful for what they have.

IMO happiness is not the sole domain of capitalistic consumerism/possession based societies. The happiest people I have ever met were the villagers of the Milne Bay Islands, very community, family based and lived to us what would be deemed a meager existence.

Right wing over 50s who read News Corp and listen to gobshite talkback radio with a straight face wouldn't recognise or appreciate the irony their lives are better for growing up in a more socialist Australia than we have today.

"But did you know Whitlam something something debt???"
