Can sympathesise with you little graham. We needed a new fence while renovating the entire house (we were at another location at the time). Had already got the fence on the opposite side done a few years prior. Absolutely no problems whatsoever. Neighbours and the old man worked out the details, and we got a good fence.

The campaigner next door (recently moved in, father in law plus family lived in the house prior) regarding this new fence situation grew impatient after his dog was close to being destroyed after an incident with the tradies on our property. Old man was getting quotes, communicating with the neighbour etc making sure we would get a good fence. Anyway, we got a call from our builder one day, notifying us a new fence had gone up. The bloke had gotten one of his jack of all trade mates round to build the fence, without finalising anything with my old man. The job he did was an absolute terrible one and from all reports the mates rates weren't that great either. The fence is already starting to fall apart as the guy who did it is an imbecile. We found out what he looked like somehow, and his face happened to appear on "The Block" one day doing some work for one of couples. His big moment on the show was stuffing up somebody's floor.

As for our backfence, the old man asked the couple living there about that. They went on some stupid rant about ivy growing and destroying the current fence blah blah blah. The fence was about 25 years old. It was their poorly maintained "jungle" that was overhanging on our side anyway. Spent a good two days digging to clean up the whole area before that fence was built. At least that fence was done well though.

At least that fence was done well though.

No surer way to reduce the lifespan of a fence, (and piss off the person on the other side) than to grow ivy along a fenceline.

So they were suppose to put in a notice before touching the fence. Because they haven't they are now responsible for all costs. I could have them pull the what work they have done down. What I will do is ask them to get quotes for a basic fence replaced (one like there is) and I'll pay half in installments.

This is being more than reasonable, is an appropriate measure to defuse tensions.I will not mention what laws they have broke unless they refuse that offer. If they choose to continue down the same path, then I won't held responsible or have any guilt to what will happen when I go for damages.

Had a similar situation with our neighbors. Boganish mum and unemployed son. Nice enough people, but threats of entitlement and extreme language are a feature. One morning the mum bailed up me and my partner in the driveway on our way to work and demanded we pay $400 to them as they had purchased materials and were going to build the fence that week. I had already seen some real builders and gotten quotes, and was all saved up and ready to pay a fair price for a professional job, all I needed was their cooperation. This did not happen. If I had 3K to pay a builder I had 400 to fix them up. Na-ah. A few days later I served them in person with a fencing notice/contract. They didn't like that. Anyhow, fast forward a week and I'm having coffee with the mum discussing which builder and quotes we think are fair, and we got it done our way which has definitely worked out the best for both of us. Neighborly relations are much improved ever since. At least the builders leveled out the terrain, excavated the old foundations and concrete, cut our planets back without damaging them, even fixed up all the irrigation and plumbing that would run along the fence line with new fittings. Always fight to have it done the best way.

Can't wait til we finish the job by extending the current fence back behind the shed and around the back lane, but will have to go through all of this again as overgrown vines from the other side are pushing that down too.
