If they were the same age I reckon they would have chased Slater first for sure but Folau was still 21 at the time and Slater 27 and would have been 29 by the time GWS joined the league.

I'm sure they tried. Slater was on good coin...
I think part of the reason they tried Folau was his demographic appeal to the Western Sydney market. If you go to any junior league or union rep games in Sydney and Brisbane the bulk of the players are Islanders, that wouldn't have been lost on the AFL.
