We should not give up pick 7 under any circumstances.
I want to get Jaksch to the club but he is not worth giving away pick 7 for if the best swap we can get is pick 20 odd.
The trouble with the club is that we have put ourselves into the position of grovelling for a third party to come in and save the Jaksch deal.
No-one will help us because they want the chance to get him as well.
Comments like those made by Rogers last week that Jaksch was worth closer to pick 12-14 didn't help either.
The club needs to learn to stop making LOUD statements - just get the job done quickly and quietly like Hawthorn do.
You act like Rogers said something everyone didn't already know.

I'd be very happy not to get Jaksch rather than lose pick 7 in any deal associated with bringing him to Carlton.

I'm just not seeing what the big deal is with this kid and don't understand the get him at all costs attitude.

Do we think there is any realistic chance that he will become anything more than just a good player for us? I'm not seeing or hearing anything to suggest he will be an out and out star.

I 'd much rather we took our chances with pick 7 at the draft than be sitting here in 5 years regretting using it in a trade and watching the person picked up at 7 tearing it up for someone else.

I may be missing something but i just haven't been convinced we have much to gain by giving up a top 10 draft pick.

It's called trade negotiations - you don't have to tell the whole world what your thinking is before the negotiations start.
The principles of bartering also apply
Rogers didn't say anything GWS wouldn't have already told him. It's not exactly news that Jaksch is worth more than pick 28. Do you really think the first conversation Carlton had with GWS about Jaksch was yesterday morning?

I never suggested he was only worth 28.
I stand by the fact that we have painted ourselves into a corner on this trade.
Hopefully they can get it done - but like I said, we should just do the deals without announcing everything first, ala Hawks.

A bit of targeted information and misinformation isn't a bad negotiation tactic... different people doing the deals, different styles is all - I am eagerly awaiting good, clever eleventh hour deals like last year

I hope you're right. Last year was a great trade period for the club. Let's hope this one is as well

I'm pretty sure last year we had rumours like the Cooney one that equated to nothing.
If we did the Jones/Cooney/45 for pick 28 deal I am not sure if I would be disgusted or just plain shocked. Most likely a fair bit of both.
Cooney is not in any of the trade target categories that we have gone after recently

We had a bit of luck last year. Daisy came for nothing, Everitt deal was done on the final day, which didn't allow anyone to outbid us and Docherty was only ever going to come to Carlton.

This year's negotiations are going to be a lot tougher.

I think you missed the point of my post.

I am willing to bet there is nothing substantial in terms of our interest in Frawley.

"The extent of Carlton's interest in Cooney since the package deal was proposed was not clear on Tuesday night."

And we have zero currency except pick 7 which we clearly want to keep.

We didn't really have any currency last year though - Eddie walked for nothing and Hampson... not currency

We were just smart with pick 32 which we picked up from the tigers

If we are trading Garlett for a pick, wonder if something similar will eventuate

No I didn't miss it. We both agree - Cooney is no chance of playing for Carlton - just said it in different ways. My statement was sheer shock horror - the sky is absa-freaking-lootely (mis-spelling intended) falling in

By the way I have no idea why I said Frawley :p

I was firmly in the "don't trade pick 7 no matter what camp"

However the more I look at reviews and videos, the more I think that from 6 to maybe as high as 40 are much of a muchness in this draft.

I'm starting to think that adding a player plus 2 picks (or 3 picks) in that range may well be a better strategy than just having the 2 picks.

Hampson got us pick 32. That is currency. We have no expendable players this year that will get us close to that.

Hence why we are stuck going after players like Tutt and Jones.

This is what happens when you have too many list spots to fill and nothing to fill them with.
