I was firmly in the "don't trade pick 7 no matter what camp"

However the more I look at reviews and videos, the more I think that from 6 to maybe as high as 40 are much of a muchness in this draft.

I'm starting to think that adding a player plus 2 picks (or 3 picks) in that range may well be a better strategy than just having the 2 picks.
I wonder if the "keep 7ers" know who they want at pick 7.

Nah we got Doc with our original 2nd. The pick we got from Richmond went to Sydney for Dre and pick 39.

But still - just as good.
Docherty was traded for 33, we picked up Everitt and 39 for pick 32 on the last day...
Yes you are right.

It's been a long day.

Hampson got us pick 32. That is currency. We have no expendable players this year that will get us close to that.

Hence why we are stuck going after players like Tutt and Jones.

This is what happens when you have too many list spots to fill and nothing to fill them with.
Warnock anyone? Going cheap - very cheap

Mick makes a salient point about depth being the difference between the top 8 and top 4 sides.

I think that we might see a few player for player swaps with Jeffy, Robbo and Sugar. As long as at the end of the trade period we are stronger as a list I'm prepared to trust our recruiters.

I'm internally debating whether a club would rate Lucas more highly v Hampson

I will admit that I've never been a Hampson fan amd thought the Tiges gave us too much for him so my judgement may be clouded

Depth is only 8 players deep.

Keep a squad of 30 together for 22 weeks, and that gets you finals.

Very true

But if you have a good squad of 35, your chances of being able to field a solid 30 for 28 weeks goes up enormously.
But your chances of keeping them all are slim - if they don't get or feel like they have potential to play all 22 games they will start looking for "other opportunities" every October

I'm not so sure, most teams use in excess of 30 players each season due to injury form slumps, etc.

If I had to characterise Brisbane, Geelong, Hawthorn and Sydney I would say that it is their ability to benefit from lower draft picks and keep together teams of role players who can come in an play to the plan that stands out most to me.

Rogers didn't say anything GWS wouldn't have already told him. It's not exactly news that Jaksch is worth more than pick 28. Do you really think the first conversation Carlton had with GWS about Jaksch was yesterday morning?
Maybe not, but by making the statement public he now puts one club in a position where it will have to defend the outcome to its supporters because there is now a defined benchmark, whether it is even right or wrong. Not a smart negotiating tactic.

HF: Menzel Henderson Thomas
FF: Walker Casboult (Jones??)
Int: Judd, Cripps, Touhy, (Pick 7)

22-32 Depth
Bell, Graham, Sheehan, Warnock, Lucas, Watson, Giles, Ellard, Carrazzo, McLean

That's a good mix of youth and experience, some promising players like Graham, Bell, Watspm and Sheehan with plent yof room to improve and some great contributors like Carrots, McLean and to a lesser extent Warnock.

If we can improve the depth in that range, by adding in some fresh blood, our overall depth would be quite good.
At this stage you wouldn't want any more than about 3 or 4 of those players in the side at the same time, but if say Ellard, Lucas and McLean get either traded, or replaced in that "next cab off the rank" bunch by some fresh blood, then our list would look a lot healthier.

Our best 22 looks amazing to me, but as everyone knows, you never have your best 22 on the park.

The only problem is - who are the people to squeeze out the likes of Brock and Ellard form that 22-32?

There aren't many names floating around this year, Howlett? Burbury? Sheridan? They all have different costs and different abilities, but I trust we are searching hard.

Technically, yes, it's currency. Residual currency from a drafting disaster, the depth of which Richmond probably didn't grasp when they recruited him. We used Pick 17 on a guy who couldn't mark, couldn't kick, and couldn't ruck. The fact that we escaped with pick 32 is amazing in hindsight.

In reality he had absolutely no real currency, we all know we were very, very fortunate to get what we did.

As has been mentioned, from picks 6-25 is very even... If we do trade 7 for Jacksch and get the other two picks below 25 can we complain if our recruiters agree with the sentiment not much diff between 6-25? We could land this years Garlett and another mid and with Jacksh and Jones we haven't done too bodly.

Would love to see trading of players and picks active during the draft itself. That way if player x isn't available at their pick or the draft is unfolding differently than expected, can then trade to another team wanting to move up.

I tend to agree. If we could turn 7 into Jaksch, 19 and 21, Get 23 from Melbourne (for Garlett and 45) and keep 28 we would be doing really well. Hit the draft hard with four picks in the top 30 and still grab Jaksch. We should be able to grab guys like Jarrod Garlett, Reece McKenzie, and Marchbank around those picks.

I will admit I haven't watched much of any U18s this year, but am I the only one who doesn't quite buy into the 'picks 6-(20,25,40)' are much of a muchness' line?

Would be the most even draft of all time for that to be the case :S

I'm mostly going off what a recruiter from Port was saying on Adelaide radio the other day. Apparently there is a clear top 5 then the next 20 or so are very even. Drops off quite significantly after that.
