A 20y.o. Jaksch + another 2 * 18y.o. is hardly backing away from any re-building. Is it?

That's potentially 3 for 1
The problem I see Harks is the quality of player at 7 is high.

I'm not sold that the quality at late first round/early 2nd is as great as what we're hearing.

Fascinates me how things changed.

This time last year we made a trade for an uncontracted pick #12 who wanted to come to Carlton and had other teams interested and had played 13 games. That cost us pick 33.

Now we want to do the same, except this time the pick #12 has played 7 games and pick 28 isn't good enough.
Pretty sure the Doc deal was going through the exact same thing (2nd round pick not good enough) at this stage in the trade period last year.

What happens if Goddard slides all the way to 19?

Look what happened to Grundy in 2012. Was a top 3 lock for most of the year.

Considering the last two drafts (Menzel, Cripps, Graham, Holman, Wood, Sheehan) we should be willing to put more faith in the recruiters.

But I've been burnt too many times that I think that trust will take a long time to come back.

And don't misunderstand me, I hope I'm wrong. If that's the deal we end up with, I sincerely hope the two kids we get at #19 and #21 are good players and that Jaksch is as good as everyone says he is and I'm forced to eat humble pie for the rest of his career like I have been with Rowe all season.
I didn't misunderstand anything at all. We're all here just throwing ideas around. :)

I'd imagine that if we thought we'd get an out and out champion at #7, then it may be hard to give up.

We may also see us getting at least 2, 150+ game players with Jaksch and one of the picks we get back and if we hit the nail on the head with the third selection, we'd be miles in front.

Yep, Dogs tried to trump us by offering their 2nd rounder which was better and then even offered Grant / which the lions stated they wanted after trade period but Doc refused.

I think Kj's manager understated his preference for us just to play the game and make sure they didn't piss stk off just in case.

But which player TGR ?

I've heard that we'd like Wright or Brayshaw but they're unlikely to get to us.
Who can say that Durdin will be all that much better than Marchbank or Goddard?

I have no idea where the recruiters rate the current crop but if we did have Jaksch rated highly in 2012, why wouldn't we rate him now?
For all we know we may actually rate him higher alone, than for any tall we may pick-up with this years #7.......anything after that is a free hit.

I have zero issues with the current recruiting team. I just don't have as much faith in this crop as others.

I know that Jaksch was rated. I dare say that if Menzel wasn't on the table, he'd already be wearing blue.

I just have a suspicion that the later part of the top 10 is being undersold, but the picks around 16 -30 are being oversold somewhat.

Interesting.
Any players you think could be at those picks that you're keen on?
I'm not as over it as previous years, but no if it means losing 7.

Happy for some of the mids and talls around there if they are added to the quality of 7. Jaksch isn't quite at that level for mine. He'll just be ready sooner.

I've thought about this at times & reckon it'd be really interesting to see statistics for how draft picks work out in these ranges.

Just get the feeling you wouldn't actually be much worse off at all with the 2 later picks, given you get 2 shots at it. Especially if it's such an even draft as is being suggested.

I REALLY don't want to be going #7 and #28 for Jaksch, #19 and #21. Without #28 I MIGHT consider it (but the GWS wouldn't) so I would at least want #42 back from the GWS too. They most likely won't use it and we need more picks to fill our list esp after getting nothing for Waite.

As for Jaksch I really am not sold on him. Lets face it he was #12 in a year when O'meara and couch was taken out of the draft and Viney went f/s in 2nd rd pushing him out to #15 at best. I don't want to structure our whole draft after a speculative KPF player who would be, at best, a mid-late 1st rd selection from his (compromised) draft when we have an early 1st rd selection this year

I know that as well, hence the comment....................bloody Menzel :)

I only saw the finals of the TAC and that's far from enough to make any real assessment but I did the look of some of the kids getting around who had genuine AFL traits.
I did like the look of Ahern, Maynard, McDonald, Lonie and De Goey but not so much Vicker-Willis and Cordy.
Didn't see the Jets though but a few of the boys there look pretty good also.

Sounds like the lyrics of a Lyle Lovett country and western ballad -- Trade Week Heartbreak
