This is what the media have told us all throughout the year regarding Port.

With the team reportedly tight against the salary cap, Port Adelaide were virtually dormant in the trade period.

He also repeated reports Port Adelaide’s salary cap is “as tight as ever”.

“A few of those players, namely Hamish Hartlett and Matthew Lobbe, on long term deals are potentially holding up a few of these other players.”

“There's a bit of talk around that North Melbourne have thrown a big offer towards restricted free agent Jasper Pittard, five-year deal for $3 million, so $600,000 a year," Mark Ricciuto said on Triple M's preview for the Port Adelaide/Hawthorn clash.

It has been speculated that Port Adelaide have limited salary cap space left and would struggle to match an offer of this size to keep Pittard if these reports are true.

Now they have just signed 2 FA's for well over a million a season plus have an interest in Jack Watts. My club has copped the same stuff from the media and so-called 'in the knows' on the site that our salary cap is bursting, people are saying the same with Richmond signing Dusty. We have dumped a stack of rubbish salaries in the past few seasons and re-signed every player we wanted to keep. Its quite obvious nobody has any clue whatsoever about what clubs contract situations are like and how they have been loaded. Its time that people stopped peddling this bullshit as fact.

Reportedly. Potentially. Speculated. If these reports are true.

Weasel words my friend. We sell words.

The new CBA was signed off a few weeks after the last of those articles was published. The new deal included a $2.1m increase in the salary cap.

They've also just lost Trengove who was reportedly on a pretty significant contract - someone will be able to source something more definitive, but I seem to recall he was on 700k+ p/a.

Given the above there's every chance their salary cap was very tight, but circumstances have alleviated that stress quite considerably.

This seems to be just one giant (excuse the pun) whinge.

My favourite is when they talk about clubs that have a "war chest" just because they don't have a Top 5 player playing for them. Doesn't allow for the fact that most clubs already have a wage structure in place as everyone has to pay at least 92.5% of the cap anyway.

Monfries, Trengrove, Impey gone. $2m more cap.

Quite likely $1m to $1.5m is instantly eaten up by players who had the increase written in to their contracts.

Id say $500k to $1m plus the 3 salaries not in play anymore would cover the new guys.

Not sure that lets them go for a big fish in the next year or 2, and may see one or 2 younger players wanting big salary bumps having to go elsewhere... but the original statement and current scenario can both be true.

Matt white, still the possibility of Young and Lobbe as well. 2-3 guys also close to retirement that will free up space as others become uncontracted.
