Eh, he has gone on quite a few periods where he couldn't buy a goal, usually ending with 2 or 3 against Man City followed by a resumption of normal service.
If it wasn't Man City, it was Newcastle. ;)

But your point is correct, I can recall him going a couple of months without a goal during one his increasingly rare uninterrupted spells of football.

You sure?

In the past 18 months he's had three separate racism charges levelled at him (Lescott & Howard, Diouf, Bangura) and copped a six-match international ban for kicking a Swiss opponent in a tunnel brawl.

Robert was a self-obsessed showpony sure, but he's got nothing like that on his rapsheet.
I beg to differ mate, being a hot head on the pitch is alot different to being a big headed full of him self tossa like Robert was (although he was a gun on his day). I remember a few years back you used to read interviews with Robert slamming the manager or stating if he doesnt play 1st team he is leaving, in a sense he was bringing the club into disrepute.

On the other hand we have Emre who is a hot head and can get him self into the shi tta at times (much like Roy Keane did in his prime) but has always been 100% commited to the club and the cause and his statements and interviews are all proof of this. This guy lives for the Newcastle shirt, he loves Tyneside and he loves Geordies and his commitment to the club can not be question.

Dyertribe I think we have 2 very very different people in Emre and Robert, one was a spoilt up him self twat who was never commited to the club when things got tough and the other is a foul mouthed hot head who loves the club, supporters and the city. Who would you prefer??

And you know what??? Joey Barton hasnt even played a game yet, ironic huh lol.

yes Jod, lets wank ourselves silly over a couple of Michael Owen fluke goals.

the two I rembember (they must've been the only ones in the past 48 months) were,

1. bullet cross from Martins straight onto his head - 1 yard out
2. game almost over - 2-1 up - gets lucky with a header and almost ****s up as easy chance - 2 yards out

yeah Jod out comes the red carpet and tuna.
Cmon mate.... look at his record. He flat out scores goals.

But considering the responses from a few Newcastle fans, perhaps he isnt as appreciated as I thought.

Michael Owen needs to play 35 EPL games and score 20 goals before he will be fully accepted by Newcastle fans. Atm his cost has far outweighed his output, lets just wait till January and see if he stays as I think many Geordies believe he is just biding his time to move onto a top 4 club.

After all that has happened what do you expect?

Half a game back for us and suddenly he is fit for 2 more England matches, who can't help but be a little cynical?

Though he did come back mighty quickly for the Everton match and his comments just now to the press seem fair enough. It's just quite frustrating because we want him on the pitch, if he comes back injured (again) this wheel will turn (again).

A few stories about (denied) of a falling out between Owen and Allardyce over the England thing. From memory there was a similar situation with Bellamy and Wales for a while back when he was with you. Can't remember if it was during Uncle Bobby's reign or Souey's.

no-one's denying his potential as a goalscorer. but if he's serious about newcastle he needs to start showing them some commitment, as there's a suspicion he sees them as little more than a platform for his international career and a shop window to get a real football club to look at him. and if I were a newcastle fan (and every day I thank christ, buddha and mohammed I'm not) I'd be insulted by this attitude.

Every 2 and a half months the guy clears £1m care of Newcastle United Football Club trading as Michael Owen Pension Fund while either sitting on his arse or playing for England.

Excuse us for not doing cartwheels when he finally pulls on the black and white and has one go in off his arse when the game's already been won.

Some news on the internationals on the weekend:

Obafemi Martins scored twice for Nigeria as they drew 2-2 in Mexico. Oba's goals - in the 32nd and 52nd minutes - gave the visitors a two goal lead only for Juan Carlos Cacho to reply with a brace of his own.

Uche missed a last minute penalty that would have won it for the Super Eagles.

Also in action on Sunday were Senegal who took on Guinea in Rouen, France.

Babacar Gueye and Mamadou Niang gave Senegal a two-goal first-half lead but a defensive error just before the interval allowed Fode Mansare to pull a goal back for Guinea.

A penalty from Diomansy Kamara eight minutes from time made sure of the win for Senegal, who extended their unbeaten run to eight games over the last year.

The participation of Abdoulaye Faye and Habib Beye in the game is to be confirmed.

Michael Owen and Alan Smith were at Wembley as England easily dispatched Estonia 3-0 on Saturday, with all the goals coming in the first half.

Owen was fairly anonymous apart from some offside efforts before being subbed in the 70th minute, to be replaced by Frank Lampard who was remarkably booed onto the pitch (no doubt media stirrers will interpret that as Owen-hating Toon fans in the crowd...).

Alan Smith didn't even make the bench.

Shay Given's Ireland needing victory to retain any faint hopes of qualification finished goalless against the Germans in Dublin. Stephen Carr wasn't part of the 18-man squad.

Emre played the full 90 minutes for Turkey in Moldova, the game ending 1-1 with Turkey coming from behind.

Good performance overnight.

Nothing spectacular but we got the job done.

Hard to pick out a batch of 'best' players, all did their job. Nicky Butt was given the sponsors man of the match, he probably was one of our best. Cacapa and Faye looked decent at the back again. Feel sorry for my man Stevie Taylor but unless there's injuries I can't see him getting a look in.

Martins and Owen worked well together up front, I'd like to see this partnership more often.

Good to see Joey back in action, he came on the Emre, who had a good first half but his second half was a little disappointing.

St. James Park is a fortress this season. 4 wins and 1 draw in our 5 league games there this season.

It's our best start to a season in 10 years :thumbsu:

big sam likes his defenders tough, mean and lean.

he likes the real men in the back. (don't draw conclusions on BSA)

taylor's time will come. very good player.

but with those lean African/coloured men BSA is so fond off dominating play like zulu warriors (I don't even know what that means) at the back - he'll have to be patient.

as will the other 'flakey' (BSA calls all white players that name) Rozehnal.

Any reason why Geremi was left on and Zog taken off?? I was rapt with the win and obviously BSA knows his stuff but that seemed like a funny move bringing on Milner for Zog, I thought he was our best in the first half, very rarely does he get beaten 1on1 or even 1on2. Geremi I thought was again useless, Owen didnt look overly interested in the game, do you notice when we score we barely makes his way over to the player and really never has a smile on his face?? Cacapa is a gun and Faye looked good to, would still prefer Rozehnal but Faye was intimidating and did make some very good tackles.

Oba Martins would almost be the most dangerous forward in the PL you can not give the bloke an inch, he just runs down everything and creates goals out of nothing, the guy clearly loves wearing the shirt to.

This weekends trip to Reading should be a comfortable win but Newcastle being Newcastle we will get beat 1-0 and barely have a shot on goal .

First off: Milner on for Zog was the correct decision. I didnt think Zog was providing much down the left flank. Our best player in the first half? Gee, I can't agree with that.

Secondly: Geremi was one of the better players in the first half, but in the second half he went quiet and didnt do much.

Thirdly: I thought Owen played one of his better games for the club in all fairness.

Fourthly: Is this Newcastle we're talking about? Quality strength in depth at the CB position. Unusual huh?

Oba Martins would almost be the most dangerous forward in the PL you can not give the bloke an inch, he just runs down everything and creates goals out of nothing, the guy clearly loves wearing the shirt to.
Martins >>>>>> Owen.

We look much more dangerous with him out there.

Geremi is a bloody hack with those school boy errors, his got 0 creativity and you stick someone like that in the centre drifting to the right...omg...unless he plays RB he should never play again IMO...Butt is too slow on the ball..he made a lot of errors on the ball bloody frustrating.

Beye is frustrating to watch with those long balls but Geremi is a disgusting player...and he is our captain...discraceful..i dont care what anyone says..

Starting 11 should be lick this every week:

Given
Beye Rozenhal Faye Enrique

Milner Emre Barton N'Zogbia

Martins Owen

that looks like a bloody good team

Doesn't matter what team we put out there, we wont win away from home

I'm pretty bloody angry to be honest.

I dont think I can name one player who can hold their head up high from their performance last night.

We lacked width from the start, played with 4 central midfielders in the middle of the park.

Looked far more threatening when Milner + Zogs came on.

Player Ratings:

Given: 6.5
Beye: 6
Cacapa: 5
Faye: 6
Enrique: 6
Geremi: 4.5
Butt: 4
Barton: 5.5
Emre: 5
Owen: 6
Martins: 6

Milner: 6
N'Zogbia: 5.5
Smith: 5.5

I'm not sure that that works. Both are very similar players, and really, a good strike partnership has the big and the small.

This principle is so important that Wenger sold Thierry Henry, one of the best, if not the best, striker in the world so that Adebayor could partner van Persie instead of Henry - RVP.

That's why Viduka was signed.

It seems that Fat Sam is going to sell one of Martins and Owen (probably Martins based on who starts more), and play the other with Viduka.

He has no reason to sell either of them.

If he does we're going to be really short on cover up front, plus, it wont be long until Owen gets injured again anyway.

Martins >> Owen.

Same old Newcastle though, why do we have so much trouble beating teams that we should be beating, yet perform well against teams that are probably better than us?

and anyone with a shred of decency is > than that disgraceful excuse for a human being - and footballer Joey Barton.

Geremi might be inadequate but Barton is no better.

doesn't deserve to wear your shirt.

hopefully in January/at the end of the season Big Sam looks far and wide for quality central midfield players. the kind who can provide reach and some challenge to the top four clubs. at the moment - your central midfield is your biggest weakness. which is concerning.

nothing much exciting about guys like Emre, Butt, Geremi and Barton.

infact - even at average Villa I wouldn't bother with either of them.

everywhere else on the pitch seems to be covered but you can't expect to go and get results away with such inadequacy in the centre of the field.

it all starts from there.

Yeah Bobby took on a real anti-international football stance for awhile there.

On top of trying to protect Bellamy's knee/hamstrings amongst Wales call-ups he fell out with and sold Nobby over it (in fairness he'd piss off to play in Lima and come back a few days late almost every time, then be useless for 2-3 weeks while he recovered from jetlag, etc) and it was thought that's what turned him off making a move for Viduka when Leeds were struggling.

I couldn't believe the starting lineup to be honest. Emre wide-left? What?

Allardyce really shits me. Tactically he's atrocious. We weren't away at the Nou Camp, we were away to Reading. Had we started Milner and N'Zogbia from the get-go we could've really got at them and possibly been home and dry by the half-hour mark, but instead we sat back looking confused and handed them the initiative completely.

I've said my piece on Geremi before, but honestly, if he shirks another challenge or ducks his head/reaches out tentatively while under a ball we should shoot him into the sun.

Alan Smith too. What does he ever actually do? Just gives away fouls and yaps at the ref. Grrrreat!
