Thanks for all the updates Tiger,I had just been quietly hoping we'd signed some quality but it appears we have done didley-squat.The triumvirate of Mike Ashley,Alan Pardew and Joe Kinnear does very little to inspire any confidence at all and simply looks to me like an absolute balls-up waiting to happen,or worse just persisting as a very average operation.
Listen to how Joe inspires the disaffected Toon Army soldiers an the end of this interview...FFS!!

Wow - Man C looked good, however we did not.

Arfa and Krul are the only 2 that had any influence on the game at all.....Taylor straight red too.

West Ham at home next week is a massive, massive game for us now.

Yeah, the only real positives that can be taken out of the game are that 1) we got one of the toughest games for the season out of the way (I'm sure we won't be the last team to cop a heavy beating at the hands of City...) and 2) Seeing young Dummett (Welsh LB coming through the academy and reserves) make his premier league debut for the club.

The Taylor red was reckless - potentially a bit harsh but given he did it deliberately, was probably a fair call.

Arsenal making a bid for Cabaye only a few hours before the game was a pretty low blow too (hence Cabaye's late withdrawal from the team). Pardew really needs wins at home against West Ham and Fulham as well as a league cup win at Morecambe to try and get some job security/confidence back in the team.

Nps scon - it's been a pretty bleak few months really. Ever since our Europa League QF loss at home, the team and club have been pretty depressing to follow. Barely avoiding relegation, appointment of Kinnear, selling of squad players but not bringing anyone in (bar an injured Remy), Wonga fiasco, no transfer movement to bring excitement to fans and now a humbling 4-0 defeat to start the new season.

We can only hope this wakes up Cashley and co to get their act together and try and strengthen the team. On the transfer front, looks like Cabaye might be off to either PSG or Arsenal (hopefully PSG). Pardew, Kinnear and Graham Carr (chief scout) were all seen last night in Lyon and were reportedly watching Yoann Gourcuff (highly rated centre attacking mid) as a possible target (maybe to replace Cabaye). Lyon is also Gomis' club so maybe we might make a double swoop? Though given the horrible transfer window we've had so far, I'm not sure things will change with only a few weeks until the period shuts...

Fingers crossed!

Taylor call was harsh but no-one but himself to blame for giving the ref the option;Dummett looked like a prospect in the limited time and involvement he had, looks very pacy.
I don't get the removal of Cabaye from the line-up.He's a professional, transfer offers are perfectly legitimate inside the transfer window so everyone is aware they will be occurring.
Anyway I'll watch with interest and hope,be great to get some solid and exciting football going with the players that are there at the minute..Howay...

Yeah pretty disappointing by Cabaye given the club still pay his wages and gave him his chance in the EPL.Will be interesting to see how it pans out - the club could in theory hold onto him if no suitable deal comes through. I can't see Cabaye going on strike and refusing to play especially given this is a WC year so he need to be playing regularly and in good form to make the squad for Brazil.

I'm keen to see how Yanga Mbiwa goes in CD partnering Colo, think those 2 could make a nice partnership if given time to build it up. With Taylor's red, really gives Yanga a chance to stake a strong claim for that second CB position.

Dummett has looked close to our best player in preseason. I wouldn't mind seeing him start at LB with Santon pushing up to Left mid (given he looks very good going forward).

Golumless here it is mate - I've seen a fair few NUFC fans around on bigfooty, would be great if we could get everyone posting in here to show the legions that make up the toon army :D

Don't think i can escape it much longer.

On the bright side, i'm confident we'll beat West Ham.

I'm pretty confident for the West Ham game too - I think the players will be fired up and want to rebound quickly. West Ham are not a bad side but if we turn up, I think a 2-0 win could be on the cards (here's hoping anyway!)

Pretty scrappy game last night. 0-0. We looked nervous and unsettled at times whilst others we played some great passages through the middle but lacked any cut and thrust in the final third. We nearly snatched a last minute winner when Gouffran somehow blasted over from 6 years out after Sammy Ameobi hit the bar from a cross.

Again no Cabaye - word is he refused to play. If that's the case, we should move him on and bring in someone else who wants to be at the club.

I was impressed with Anita in the holding mid spot and thought at times Ben Arfa and Marveaux on the wings looked good. Sissoko isn't a natural CAM but did well enough. Cisse is definitely underdone and Shola didn't offer much as a target man. Colo was class down back and Yanga Mbiwa looked mostly tidy down back but also a threat up forward.

Kinnear better sign some more players because our bench was woefully short of options and if we don't strengthen, we might be in some trouble.

That really stuffs us up, Probably have to pull Sissoko back into a box to box midfielder role (why we signed him...) and have Tiote and Anita as the holdings. Getting a bit defensive without him.

How would Ben Arfa go as a CAM with someone else on the other wing?

Yeah, think that's how we'd go (unless we bring someone in as a replacement). HBA is our best creative player and probably one of the few genuine players we have that can try and open up defences.

Anita looked quite good at DM on the weekend. Played some good passes but didn't have to work too hard defensively as West Ham (like ourselves) lacked punch up front. Will be interesting to see how Tiote and him go together. Sissoko (IMO) should definitely be playing more as a box to box (Cabaye's current role) where his strength, power and speed can be maximised. HBA as a CAM would be awesome too as he makes defenders nervous. Think it's his natural position infact as a number 10.

Against West ham we went with Marveaux and HBA on the wings and they did a few nice things but we had no genuine threat in the air or up forward to make us look like scoring. Really need some more options up forward or another playmaker/creative mid.

I know we have been crying out for another forward all season and failed miserably to recruit said forward (Gomis anyone?)

Really without Cabaye as that box to box/AM, we need to either mover HBA central as you mentioned but Tiote and Anita is a way to defensive pairing. Suppose that isn't a bad thing if we are gunning for a midtable finish but Sissoko is going to have his work cut out.

Gouffran could also play as a forward + winger which isn't a bad thing to have right now but yeah we are in need of a target man.

We definitely need a better target man - Shola is pretty average.

Sky news were reporting overnight that we are keen on Wigan's McCarthy - young, CAM. I personally rate him but we are going up against Everton who are managed by his former Wigan manager in Martinez. If he is a replacement for Cabaye, we could in theory make a profit and then use the leftover money for a new striker or possibly a winger like Ince or Sinclair.

With only about a week left in the transfer window, Kinnear better start getting busy!

So what is Newcastle's realistic selling price?

Arsene seems keen though from a supporters point of view he's not really the player we need but is obviously a quality player.

18-25mil anything around there will get it done.

Yep, in line with Golumless' post - I believe the figure the club have stamped on him is $20m (though some reports saying we might go down closer to $18m).

Cabaye has reportedly made Arsenal his preferred club of choice and is currently refusing to play again for the club (PSG and Monaco as well as Man U were all linked to him earlier in the transfer window so it remains to be seen if they would enter the race should Arsenal make a second bid).

The thing working in our (NUFC's) favour is that Cabaye still has 3 years on his contract and by not playing, Cabaye is hurting his own prospects of playing at the WC next year (as Deschamps - France national team manager) said overnight he would not be selecting players who are not playing regularly for their clubs. Further to that, Mike Ashley is a very shrewd businessman who always looks for a bargain and doesn't like to get bullied into accepting bad deals. I would be very surprised if he decided to accept a much lower value bid to his own evaluation given Cabaye only cost us $4m anyway.

One thing's for sure, if we sell him, we need another creative mid in the team badly as we sorely lack someone who can play good through balls and has the vision to spot good runs made by team mates. We are reportedly bidding for McCarthy from Wigan for 8m (could be a Cabaye replacement) as well as being linked to Manuel Fernandes, Tom Ince and Andre Ayew who are all creative players.

tomorrow morning we play Morecambe in the second round of the league cup.

We 'should' win this but we have struggled against lower league teams in the past - hopefully we can have a good cup run this season!

The team I'd like to see play would be:

Krul (needs match practice after coming back to pre season training late due to injury).
Dummett - impressed in preseason at LB, deserves some more game time.
Yanga Mbiwa - with S. Taylor still out, give him another run at CB.
Colo - Experience and another chance to build the relationship with Yanga.
Debuchy - Hasn't started the season particularly well. Could use more games to try and find form.
Marveaux - think he could be a real weapon with his creativity. One of the better crossers in the team.
Gosling - another impressived performer in preseason
Anita - looked good against West Ham, at the moment looks like Cabaye's replacement in the team.
Sammy Ameobi - did some nice things against west ham after coming on as a sub. Give him more minutes to see if his pace can open up Morecambe.
Cisse - Needs more game time after not much of a preseason due to the Wonga-Shirt issue.
Shola Ameobi - Physical target man, should do well against Morecambe.

Subs: Elliot, Ben Arfa (bring him on if we need a spark), Santon (sub him on in second half), Gouffran, Sissoko (rest), Birigimana, Vuckic.

2-0 Vs Morecambe, both Ameobi boys on target.

Lots of rumours overnight too - apparently we are going in again for Gomis as well as trying to bring Ba back on loan from Chelsea. Fingers crossed we can get something over the line in the last few days before the deadline

The single reason I've said bugger all about the season's start is because it didn't look splendid.
People say that Ashley's shrewd and I reckon he's a tad moronic.
Pardew's got a long term contract but can't spend!
FFS Joe Kinnear, was probably born a knob.
Last season's performances made the weaknesses perfectly clear.Flirted with relegation for the second time in not too long.
The management don't have to do too much to ensure the stadium is full week after week.
A squad full of neat passing mids will not win much!
