Backline's different with Krul returned;Perez,Collocinn,Sissoko,Colbach..plenty of'em doing well.If we equalise we'll win.
Oh I'm writing to myself..
Sorry mate! Missed the game - was playing host for a party. From most reports we played incredibly well in the first half and were very stiff to go in 1-0 at HT.

Apparently Cabella was MotM? That's very encouraging to hear, hopefully it all clicks from here - he's been getting better in the last few weeks and seems to be adapting - hopefully Carver (or Garde) see fit to start him (along with Aarons in place of Gouffran), that would give us some serious cut and thrust going forward (even better if Sissoko stays around).

You forgot the most important part

Won the league with Arsenal in 97/98
:D

Apparently he's still pretty close to Wenger and keeps in contact with him quite a bit. Apparently was a very keen student of the game during his playing days under Arsene as well. Seems like he could be a good option for us (seems to be the front runner for the job). Will be interesting to watch where we go from here.

Sissoko was also quoted yesterday saying "Arsenal have always been the club of my heart" Shoei (given I think Viera was his hero/who he models his game around, that would make sense).

Long haired Champs.
Yeah Cabella played really well and Chelsea weren't shy about giving him a clip either. He's adjusted to the pace and physicality of the EPL and when de Jong comes back and we hang on to Sissoko our attacking creativity will not be a concern.
Just get Costa and Ronald Koeman in this window and we're Howay The Lads!!:p:cool:

Cabella can't finish, that's his problem, a top class player would have nailed his opportunities. He is getting better though, certainly knows how to slice through multiple defenders.

Gouffran is useless.

On Garde, from all reports he is a fragile type of guy ( left Lyon due to personal/family reasons). If thaw the case then he may not last with us, our supporter base are probably the most loyal in the world but we are demanding, the guy who takes the role needs to be charismatic ( which Garde has in spades) and mentally tough ( huge question marks).

This is pivotal time in the clubs history, we have to get it right and if that means waiting until the end is the season and going for a Galtier ( who is as tough as nails) then so be it.

Yeah, saw some highlights of Cabella's game against Chelsea - had some really nice, incisive moves and looks really dangerous when pressed close to a line or surrounded by opponents (not too unlike Ben Arfa at times if I dare say). Hopefully takes a lot of confidence from that performance and builds from there! Needs to start against Southampton this weekend IMO.

Any idea tige19 what the Garde personal issue was? Was it something like Martin O'Neill stepping down to look after his sick wife or something like that? All I saw (around his decision to step down) was he said he couldn't commit to the Lyon manager's role fully and therefore made the decision in the club's best interests.

There were reports in Germany that Bruno Labbadia is one of the top 2 contenders for the job. Not sure there is much truth in that but is another name to consider.

Whatever happens, I think the club need to make a decision pretty quick confirming their intention (whether that be Carver seeing out the season or somebody coming in). A few players are getting a bit anxious it seems with the uncertainty:

“It will be good when the club makes a statement to say: ‘This is the new coach,’” said Daryl Janmaat, who would be happy to see Carver appointed until the end of the season at least. “It will be better for everyone. Then everyone knows. If it’s John Carver, it’s good. We like him. I think he can do a good job.”

Jack Colback has expressed similar concerns about the current hiatus. “It’s never a good thing when you don’t know what’s happening,” said the midfielder. “And the fans want to know what’s happening too.”

On the transfer front, saw a worrying rumour that Cisse could be a target to replace Bony at Swansea. I could see the club selling him (reportedly $7m) given he's 30(?) next year so won't have much resell value...plus with De Jong close to a return, they might think he can fill the void in goals...

A more exciting rumour is that Roma aren't keen to play Yanga-Mbiwa anymore because they will be forced to buy him if he makes 20 apps for them (17 to date). If that is the case, maybe we can terminate the loan and he can get a second chance? Surely can't be any worse than Williamson...plus if we get Garde, a French manager who would have seen a lot of Yanga might be able to get the best out of him than the clueless Pardew haha.

Absolutely love what the club with did with Mapou, it's a win/win, he plays 20 games we trigger a big payout clause and if Roma decide to bench him then we terminate the loan and bring back one of the Serie As best Central defenders this season. I've always like Mapou, the French FA like him to as his back in the national team reckoning. Look forward up hopefully getting him back.

Not sure what the personal issue was with Garde, however reading a lot of fan boards both on the Toon front and Lyon front there are some questions about his vulnerability if things get tough. If you remember he packed his bags when the Lyon board was starting to place strong financial restraints on the club, they were pressured to sell players and there was some turmoil. I'm not really speculating to much but if he did feel some pressure from the position at Lyon then I hope he realises it won't be any easier at Newcastle.

Yeah, in hindsight, has been a decent bit of business by the club regarding Mbiwa - has probably regained some of the confidence in his abilities which he probably lost under Pardew and if he returns to us, might be able to cement a spot in the team.

I personally hope he comes back as I'm not entirely convinced Cashley would reinvest the money from his sale into the squad...

Who's the Lyon owner again? Aulas(?) or something like that? From our previous pursuits of Grenier and Lacazette, he sounds like (or gives the impression) he'd be a bit difficult to work for! Probably not too dissimilar to ourselves which might help.

As you say though, our fanbase is fairly demanding. I'd like to think we'd be more patient with Garde if he did join. I think if he was honest when speaking to the fans (and not like his predecessor who was happy to tow the Sports Direct line) and at least made logical team selections, that would go a long way to keeping the fans happy - heck, if he could motivate the players for the derby, that'd be a huge improvement over Pardew lol.

One thing with Garde is the guy has real charisma, I think the fans would love him, I know I love the way Lyon have always played their football and he comes from the Wenger production line which screams entertainment. I say bring him in, give him some support and keep the French revolution charging on, it certainly helps when your manager can relate and speak their tongue.

So according to John Carver, he is "almost certain" we'll have a manager by the end of the month.

If that is the case, Galtier, De Boer (always was a long shot) and Tuchel would (if according to their reports of not being available until the end of the season) all be out of consideration.

I'm guessing it will be either Garde or Carver.

Even Carver thinks it will no longer be him after another defeat this time 1-2 to Saints at St James.

Crystal Palace who appointed Pardew to save them from relegation is now directly behind Newcastle on the table by only 4 points. Maybe he's not such a terrible manager without one hand tied behind his back.

Whoever takes over at Newcastle will face the same issues of spending that must be balanced by sales during the transfer period and the unexpected sale of star players midway through a season for massive profits.

Ashley runs Newcastle like a discount brand sports supermarket. He's stopped the financial haemorrhaging that the profligate spending of the Halls and Shepherds caused but he's robbed Newcastle supporters of any hope as well.

Any new manager is going to have the same issues Pardew faced.

I was planning to get up for the Soton game but glad I didn't, from most accounts it was a pretty poor game where we dominated but couldn't convert that into goals.

Saw the highlights and there was a pretty blatant penalty that was not given at the end that would have given us a chance at a draw but for some reason the ref decided not to award it. Looks like he got a pretty good view of it too judging by screens!

I'm sure Fonte (Soton player) didn't mean to use his hands but its pretty clear his hand blocks the shot and defenders are schooled to keep their arms by their side when defending. Would love to hear his reasons for not awarding it.

Also, Carver deciding to play Perez up top by himself at home was strange - would have been the perfect game to start Riviere in (who has at least looked better when partnered up front). Pretty disheartening to lose to a Soton team that hasn't won on Tyneside for 17 odd years and that had a fairly large number of outs.

Hopefully Ashley saw and is getting ready to sanction some spending on players (a CB and a ST at the minimum) because at the rate we're going (2 wins from our last 12 games), that coveted top 10 finish he wants will be in serious jeopardy!

If there is any positives to take from the weekend, it would be Gouffran ending his goal drought (hopefully opens the flood gates because we need someone to help step up while Cisse is away) and a cryptic message from Garde on French TV over the weekend when quizzed about the rumours linking him to the job "I can't say anything today".

Oh and no one was sold...yet! ;)

Shocking decision. Any handball that you can see coming should be a penalty unless your arms are by your side and/or the shot has enough power you don't have time to react.
Would have thought the same Oz - here's the footage. Bias aside, would have thought this was a clear cut penalty...

Credit to Soton though, they did make the best of our inept defending and won away from home with quite a few outs.

I stayed up to watch the game but was so tired I kept falling asleep - gave up about 20 mins in. Disappointing result but Soton are a good side. The week off this week probably won't be a bad thing, we bloody better have a new manager before the next game though!

Agreed! If nothing else, I believe Abeid, De Jong, Aarons and Obertan are all getting close to a return and Raylor not far behind to hopefully help rejuvenate the team (what's the bet the club uses that as an excuse to not buy anyone?).

Saw this last week but would dearly love to see Gutierrez make a return - reckon it would be a really special moment for him, his family, the players, the club and the fans. Fair to say we could use a bit of happiness and joy and seeing him back would be awesome. He actually scored a decent goal for the U21 side last week I think so he's perhaps not far from achieving the dream!

“I have played in a World Cup but if I play again for Newcastle then that will be the best moment of my career,” Gutiérrez said. “To get back after the cancer and chemotherapy, to put all that behind me, would be a huge moment. I feel really good. Maybe in two weeks I will be at 100%.”

Gutiérrez, who joined Newcastle in 2008 from Real Mallorca, added: “The welcome from the fans from the day I arrived has been special. So if I come back and play for Newcastle then, of course, it will be the best. It will be emotional. I haven’t been to the stadium. It is hard to go and not be involved. For now, I prefer to watch on TV at home. But, of course, I want to return to the first team.”

I frogging love Jonas, to be fair he's probably not first team material anymore but the guy certainly deserves some time on the pitch, he's an inspiration for the players, fans and people of Newcastle.

Handball call was a joke, it was the Soton guy was scared he was getting hit by a truck and braced.

Carver doesn't cut it, dafuk starting Perez by himself up front? I suppose to be fair we have absolutely nothing to give him a chop out ( do we even consider Rivière a member of NUFC??).

No chance MA will spend money this month, especially with no manager signed as yet. Best case scenario is getting some fringe player from European club to help fill a gap for 3-4 months, that's the best we can hope for.

I would play Jonas at the next home game, bring him off the bench late to give the team and fans a huge boost - I reckon it'd really get us going.

I know Riviere has been god-awful, but I don't think we've helped him at all - pre and post injury we have predominantly played him one out WHEN he has been on the pitch - and that has been very rare. To give him the most amount of confidence we really need to play him alongside a Perez or someone of that ilk to get him involved. I reckon (mainly early) he did some OK things and had some nice touches but he looks completely bereft of confidence now. I hope we don't ruin him for good.

Agreed on Jonas - not sure he'd be in our best team anymore (I reckon he could still make the bench though) but we need something to cheer and inject some joy into our season!

Riviere has looked better when played next to another forward IMO - Perez is very clever and creative, I reckon he's the best bet to unlocking Riviere's best form.

I just saw Rangers had a caretaker manager who's resigned - so now Mike Ashley has to find 2 new managers! Seems there's a few rumours creeping around that Laudrup (former Swansea) manager could creep into and get the job. Wouldn't mind him myself, him or Garde (or just about anyone over Carver haha).

Laudrup YESSSSSS... Would love him, the Geordies would love him to!!

Well if Riviere is ever going to score and lay his claims the time is now, otherwise I can see him going back to France at the end of the season.
