The Toronto Raptors

In 2011, the Toronto Raptors were in the midst of a rebuild. They hired a coach by the name of Dwane Casey and by 2013 were a playoff team.

By 2016 they had the second best record in the Eastern Conference, bowing out in the conference finals (basically the preliminary final). In 2017 they had the third best record, lost in the semis and then in 2018 they had the best record in the NBA, a franchise record 59 wins and Dwane Casey was named Coach of the Year. They still lost in the Semi finals.

So what did they do? They fired the coach and traded out their best player for another great player. They promoted an assistant coach (Nick Nurse) who changed the game plan, used better lineups and smart training strategies.

They won the NBA title in 2019. They had their best ever regular season in 2018, fired the coach and won the title in 2019. Not only is that incredible, but shows just what type of ruthlessness is required in a professional sporting environment if you're chasing success.

Just some food for thought. Hopefully the Geelong board is looking for answers and finds them in the Toronto Raptors of 2019.

As much as we want it to happen, and it should, we can’t afford the millions to pay scott out.

If only he would fall on his sword and admit he can’t take this team any further. He’s too arrogant to admit that though.
Freo is looking for a coach. Scott has some history with the Dockers

So, hypothetical question...

Scott departs, who comes in? Surely need to look outside the current coaches box. Would the club go with an experienced coach like Lyon, or give an opposition assistant a crack at it?

Fwiw, I'd rather not have Lyon, but I'm not sure who else would be on the table

Geelong havent got the cattle

However i just think this stability nonsense - re AFL coaches - that seems to be the trend - it is ridiculous

Brad Scott had 10 years at North ( and on tremendous money like they all are ) for a 50% win rate - they never ever looked like winning a flag . I reckon 95% of Port supporters would love a change of coach - they are sick of car selling talking Kenny - whats he had 8 years - i think he has had a fair go

Melb after finishing 17th after being in a PF the previous year - the Melb Chairman should put Goodwin on notice - but he wont

If there was only a relegation rule in AFL - alot of these blokes would be frog marched out quick smart - and the supporters wouldnt have to listen to their spin doctor shiit .

Does the NBA have a soft cap for coaching staff?

Only won because GS lost Durant :p
Maybe, but my point is the head office sacked up and made a massive call - they had mostly the right players, but the wrong coach. It was ballsy and it paid off.

They were also carried to the Finals by a historic playoffs run from Kawhi.

Unfortunately, that's not as easy to do in the AFL. Look at how good Danger was and we still lost.

The funny thing about Hinkley is that he would be the perfect finals coach for us. Sack Scott after the H&A and bring in Kenny with some passion and player motivation for the finals and play on instinct.

Raptors did the equivalent of trading Mitch Duncan and a first rounder for Nat Fyfe.

Maybe if Fyfe was almost guaranteed to leave and he was a 1yr rental. Like trading Duncan and the pick for someone in Kelly's situation but had done a McCarthy and sat out for a year by refusing to play.

If you have a look at Cats 2000 under Thompson and Scott from 2011 you will see a massive difference in set up's, we need to go back to the draft for a few years and get the talent needed if that means having a few years without finals so be it the question is does Scott want to rebuild or do we get some who wants to rebuild.....

Its not 100% scott. Its like at North... the club would have to sign off on the road to tread

Respect to the Raptors and they played a sensational finals series but they were extremely lucky to face GSW without Durant and Boogie and then with Klay going down during the series.

Would be like us facing WCE this week minus Shuey, Yeo and McGovern.

The OP is also leaving out another significant point. The Raptors kept running into a bloke called LeBron James in the playoffs.

They lost to the Cavs in 2015-16 in the Conference Finals

In 2016-17 the Cavs again dumped the Raptors out of the playoffs in the 2nd round.

In 2017-18, once again in the Conference Finals, the Cavs swept Toronto.

Take LeBron out of Cleveland and Toronto probably win the East before this year (although going on to beat Golden State wouldn't have been easy during that time).

And as someone else mentioned, Kawhi played one of the great post seasons.

Fun fact, the coach Toronto sacked actually steered his new team (a middle of the road franchise) to a 3-0 record against his old side.
