In 2011, the Toronto Raptors were in the midst of a rebuild. They hired a coach by the name of Dwane Casey and by 2013 were a playoff team.
By 2016 they had the second best record in the Eastern Conference, bowing out in the conference finals (basically the preliminary final). In 2017 they had the third best record, lost in the semis and then in 2018 they had the best record in the NBA, a franchise record 59 wins and Dwane Casey was named Coach of the Year. They still lost in the Semi finals.
So what did they do? They fired the coach and traded out their best player for another great player. They promoted an assistant coach (Nick Nurse) who changed the game plan, used better lineups and smart training strategies.
They won the NBA title in 2019. They had their best ever regular season in 2018, fired the coach and won the title in 2019. Not only is that incredible, but shows just what type of ruthlessness is required in a professional sporting environment if you're chasing success.
Just some food for thought. Hopefully the Geelong board is looking for answers and finds them in the Toronto Raptors of 2019.
