Re: The Trade Thread

I would still play Kosi as the backup ruck/3rd tall. He would just be a rotation up foward though, not a cog like previous years.

I didn't forget Roo totally. Juat forgot to put him in the rotation. Im so keen on him playing on the wing, freewheeling with Goddard all over the park, that I didn't even think of Roo up forward. He's been beaten down for so long that he deserves a break. For his sake (and the teams) I'd take Roo away from the double/triple teaming.

I could see it going the other way though and Roo puts on 5-6kgs and doesn't leave the forward 50 :p

Re: The Trade Thread

Well ... it depends.

As it stands we have probably paid close to cap for 2010.

However:

Are we going to part ways with any names? Might not be just one way traffic (we have too many of one type that appeals to a club who has a player we want).

Would Gardiner's wage be higher than an U/18 pick (assume so along with Baker and Mini too)? Releases maybe $50k each.

A back-ended (4 year) deal would line up with when many of our stars have retired.

Contracts can be renegotiated for players who are nearing veteran stage (back ended to when they will qualify - they would probably be agreeable with the increased certainty this would provide).

There will be capacity if we want to go for a name.

More info Squiz.... Can only assume you mean Back Flankers (Gilbo? Gram?)....but to which club? ....and which player? MC at Brisbane?

Pelchen could go any number of ways.

I can think of many players who we could afford to trade if it landed us a quality mid with pace/skill, a ruckman (who can play other roles), or a younger marking forward.

But it would be guesswork as to the ones Pelchen has in mind.

I'm out of my depth with players at other clubs though ... don't watch many games that the Saints aren't involved in any more.

Clark would be an obvious one, but surely there will be others.

Re: The Trade Thread

I'd hope our number one priority would be Gunston.
Priority, but with an emphasis on cost vs. benefit. Does he want to be here and what do the Crows want for him?

Re: The Trade Thread

So is our cap full like Caro says it is or not?

I'm very confused and would like some real facts.

I'm wondering if Lovett's payout and Gaerdiner's salary were included in our 2011 cap

Plus we have already delisted four players, two of which were quite senior players who would have been on decent money.

Plus, as Squizzy has postulated, there may be trades or more delistings to further open up the cap.

Would make sense of the fact that the AFL were not being zero tolerant about it.

Re: The Trade Thread

Would love to trade off players that aren't worth what we're giving them.

If our cap really is full there must be at least a few of them.

If not well, no problem.

Still confused really but thanks Kildonan for your input.

Re: The Trade Thread

Dawson, Jones and Ray to Fremantle for Silvagni, Suban and a 3rd round pick.

All 3 would be looking for more money. All 3 are borderline in our best 22 and all 3 are very close to Ross. Would free up some cap room while bringing in a suitable backline replacement (Silvagni), a Saints supporting fringe mid (Suban) and a 3rd round pick in a very even draft.

Sounds good to me :thumbsu:
EDIT:Actually, what about Jon Griffin instead of Suban?

Re: The Trade Thread

I can't see Freo giving up Silvagni and Suban to be honest, especially for a player with such poor ball use as Jones as well as Dawson, who I'm sure most of the Fremantle faithful and the coaching staff would have behind Silvagni.

If the trade was offered though, I would take it without much thought.

Re: The Trade Thread

SS - As much as I love Faz we need to find space to play the likes of Winmar, Cripps, Ledger etc.

All 3 of these boys have gone on record as saying that Ross saved their career. Would make them close I'd think. Jones and Ray have also had rumours about going home while Damien Barrett said on the weekend that Ross Lyon was looking to find a way to get Dawson to Freo.

Aussie Thunda threw up Silvagni as an option and I added Suban because he was a hardcore Saints fan growing up and might be tempted in a move home.

All fantasy but I think it's a realistic option.

Re: The Trade Thread

Dawson (25) Jones (28) and Ray (25) for Suban (21) Silvagni (24) and a presumably 18 year old draftee?

Shit I'd take it but I somehow doubt Freo are gonna trade for 3 older and arguably spudder 'role' players (harsh on Farren).

But we did overlook both Suban, and Silvagni was right underneath our noses at Casey. So maybe Ross doesn't like them too much :p

Re: The Trade Thread

Do you guys not realise that we would be dealing with ROSS LYON. The man has built his coaching reputation on taking other clubs scraps in an effort to win a flag.

If he really thinks Freo are close to getting one then it makes sense that he would look to top up with some fringe players from another club. It just so happens that we have a few that he loves.

As for Griffin - He would be nice but the guy seems too flakey personality wise. He left Adelaide because he wanted to go home. He didn't care about being second fiddle to Sandilands. Then he plays a couple of games and expects to be number one all of a sudden?? When he realised he was behind even Zac Clarke in the pecking order he tells the club he wants to be traded to Port because they are desperate for a ruckman.

Ummmm huh? What happened to "I'm going home fo family reasons" The guy is looking out for himself as a number one ruckman and I'm pretty sure most of us see that firmly in Big Mac's hands. The only way he could fit into our side would be if he played in the ruck and Ben played at full forward.

I've heard that Griffin had family reasons which have now been resolved and is now focusing on footy again, but I don't know if that is true or not.

I wouldn't be going for Griffin unless I was getting him as a backup, and I reckon he'd be a pretty expensive backup. No for mine, especially when a club like Port will want him more and pay more than we will.

Why??????

Just because these blokes are young does not mean that they will be better. Youth doesn't equal talent, it only equals potential.

I believe Cripps and Ledger have the potential to be very good players for the Saints. Winmar I'm more hopeful on.

:thumbsu::thumbsu: agreed, what has Winmar ever shown? Seems like we only picked him up cos of his surname.
