THE Traditional game??

I tried to watch yesterday traditional match (Carlton/Collingwood), but got bored pretty fast, not because of the standard of play, because it was pretty high, especially from Collingwood which was a huge surprise, but because of the likeness of the jumpers. Carlton should bring back their M&M's jumper for matches where the two uniforms clash.

if anything, collingwood should have gone with the white shorts. The problem is that the pies now have more black in the guernsey - this is fine as long as it is with the black shorts, and it doesn't clash!!! It ended up (for all intents and purposes, navy blue looks a hell of a lot like black!!) like two teams wearing about an equal amount of black and white.

The away team should have the responsibility of making sure their entire strip does not clash. Not just the token effort that the white shorts are - in yesterday's game, both sides had white numbers on a black back (again, navy is very close to black).

I think the whole league needs to look at this problem together and set aside their resistance to change for a moment.

Collingwood's new design is fine....but I think in addition to the new predominantly black one they should have kept the old one with the white back as an alternate and use both accordingly. Then they can wear the new strip with black shorts and the old one with white shorts.

There is nothing that says traditional designs and patterns can't be retained. Clubs like Essendon, Richmond and Carlton who have almost exclusively dark coloured jumpers could keep the traditional fronts that they have and just add white (or yellow) number panels to the back, much like Port Adelaide and North Melbourne have on their backs.

I've been working on an alternate jumper project using Illustrator and Photoshop. When it is finished I'll put it up.

Alternate jumpers make too much sense to avoid. Traditional strips are still worn to satisfy the purists. Supporters will buy two strips instead of one, making some money for the club. Confusion will be reduced greatly, hopefully making for a lot better game for the spectators, and it might make the job a bit easier for umpires (we know they need all the help they can get right now).

I know some people will scoff at this and say "Well it's your own damn fault if you can tell the two teams apart". That's not the issue; we all can if we look closely enough. But I think that there is too much computation involved in determining that sometimes, like in the case of two black jumpers clashing.

Just my opinion.
