In terms of midfielders, he's a nice addition but not what we need. The only two type of midfielders we should be signing are a no#10 or a physical beast/DM type ala Diame/M'Villa. We don't need another attacking midfielder.
M'vila has a lot of attitude problems which is why arsene didn't sign him during the summer window. His petulance at being subbed off during the euros for example (Wenger was actually commentating during that game for French TV). Not sure if he's pulled his head in since, but he seems a disruptive influence on the dressing room, which is why arsenal stayed away given recent examples like gallas, song etc.

Holtby's a good pickup, I've watched a bit of him on the back of Liverpool's rumoured interest a month or so ago and my thoughts were that he seemed to be very strong technically and reminded me of a German Jordan Henderson, but far more attack minded and at this stage more of a goal threat. I wonder if he'll slot straight into that #10 role at Spurs or whether he'll do his apprenticeship out wide? Here are Raphael Honigstein's (top German football journalist) thoughts on him:

@honigstein: he's a no10 who can play deeper but isn't quite ready for that yet. ok in wide positions but not really at his best there
@honigstein: his main problem is inconsistency. not always at the level that we saw from him v Arsenal at the Emirates and for German U21 (excellent)
@honigstein: don't see a way for him to play for Germany at the moment. but that doesn't really matter, think of Mata / Spain
@honigstein: here's the important bit, imo. because he's free, it's really a no-brainer. at, say 70k per week, he basically plays for free for 2 years
@honigstein: ...as Spurs will always be able to sell him on for 6-7m if he doesn't work out.
@honigstein: the potential is there. but not a world-beater yet

Disagree, we definitely need a player like Holtby to slot into that #10 role. However, for me he represented the most cost effective option of several young attacking mids we would have been looking at in the summer, not necessarily the best one. I'm not against us setting aside £20m to secure one of Eriksen, Isco, Belhanda etc all of whom I see as superior players to Holtby who while very talented and on a technical level a very proficient footballer, lacks the dynamic creative spark that these players bring but who knows, he may develop that with time.

Quotes from Rodgers indicating that if possible Coates will be sent on loan for the rest of the season to give him more game time, and the talk is that 21 year old French centreback Nicolas Isimat-Mirin will be brought in to fill that gap and then replace Carragher at the end of the season.

He looks like a young Skrtel. Though I find it a bit odd if that's the case, I'd always thought Kelly and/or Wisdom were being groomed to provide cover/compete for a spot at RB/CB. Both have proven they are certainly more than capable of providing backup for Skrtel & Agger even at their young ages.

Will you have 20m to set aside for a player like that?

By all accounts, yes. The last 12 months at LFC has mirrored what FSG did at the Red Sox last year where they cleared a lot of the high earning deadwood out of the squad, they then recently reinvested big money into signing several top quality younger players.

With this being our first full season with around half a dozen new sponsorship deals worth almost an extra £30m to the club per season, plus the additional revenue that will be lining every EPL club's pockets come the summer with the new TV rights deal, on top of the approximately £15m net per season we have trimmed from the wage bill in the last 12 months I have no doubt we'll have £20m to spend on a player of that calibre.

The proof will be in the pudding though of course.

Totally off topic but I'm trying to think of Spurs players that have played for Man City and vice versa, and I can't think of many. Only Clive Allen and Paul Walsh so far.

Surely there was more than that.

[edit]Adebayor now I guess[/edit]
Paul Stewart.

Signed him just before we got Gazza. God he was awful. Ended up at Liverpool ;)

How are Milan going to be able to afford Balo? They have no money even after the sales of Ibra and Silva.
they can't, hence the ha.

and sneijder to qpr isn't ridiculous. it's stupid from sneijder, but if they offer him the right $$$ he'll be off there like a bolt. i dont see any top teams signing him because he's an absolute campaigner who believes he's much better than he currently is.

and kpb's transfer request sounds strange. it's not milan's fault. there will always be silly's around the world who chant this garbage. why punish milan?

i would take him though. great player. swap deal for mario + a bit of cash from milan's end, oh boy i can dream.

Probably just an excuse to get out of Milan - his poor form, the loss of his mates (Ibra, Cassano, probably Robinho too) and Milan's fall.

I did laugh at Pato's sale for 15m (spread over 4 years) so soon after teams had offered 35-40m. Also we're looking to sell Robinho - although Santos only want to offer 7m - and then there's KPB. Also I heard some Russian club have offered 10m for Abate.

Who are we after? No idea. I could name some players that the media have linked us with - Balotelli, Ogbonna, Strootman, Nainggolan - but unfortunately they all cost money. Anyway, we all know that Milan will just wait until Jan 31st and do a few panic buys (loans).
