Surely Torres could be used as a (relatively small) makeweight in any Chelsea deal for Falcao? Chelsea would probably have to either pay part of Torres' wages or come to an agreement with Torres about a payout, but you'd think that the parties could all come to some kind of agreement. Obviously, this is assuming that Atletico Madrid would have Torres back...

I don't mean that they should bring Torres back as a marquee-type signing. I'm sure they would spend the funds generated from selling Falcao on a better striker than Torres.

But Torres gets to go back to his boyhood club and familiar surroundings where the fans love him and I'm sure he'd be happy to play second fiddle as long as it meant that he felt "loved", while Atleti don't have to pay too much for him and get some potentially useful squad depth - I think it could suit both parties.

Yeah, it felt a bit strange writing what I did and as a Liverpool fan, I admit that it is hard not to be at least mildly amused by the whole situation!

But I just think that it makes sense for both parties.

because torres is at a team that will be competing for top honours, in a nice city being paid handsomely. it's very difficult to shift a 160k a week paperweight. they might be able to piss him off to turkey or something but i can't see atletico being interested in him while he's still in this situation. if his contract runs down and he leaves chelsea, then yes, but right now i cannot see it happening.

Torres is contracted to the end of the 2015/2016 season on an enormous salary so really he holds the power to decide whatever happens. The only way Chelsea will be able to move him on will be if they pay out the difference in wages between what another club would be willing to pay (at best probably not even half of what he's on) and his current wages, so whatever happens it's going to be a very expensive exercise for Abramovich.

With the FFP restrictions it's unlikely they'll be willing or able to waste so much of their budget paying a severance package of that size, so I think the most likely scenario is that he sits there on the bench for the duration of his contract and probably regrets the day he asked to be sold to Chelsea for the rest of his life. I feel bad for him that it's not working out for him personally but we all have to be accountable for the choices we make.

He's now number 2 behind Ba and with probably Falcao and a returning Lukaku being at Chelsea next season I can't see him wanting to stick around and be 4th in line. He will want to be somewhere where he can play most weeks and fight for his world cup spot.

I saw nearly every game Torres played for Liverpool and observed that he is one of those players that needs to feel "loved" and like he belongs. One of those players who needs to be serenaded by the fans, told how good he is by teammates etc. He got that at Liverpool, where he was adored, and he fed off of that, his confidence skyrocketed and he delivered the goods.

I really don't think that money is the main motivation for him, and believe that he would sacrifice a portion of his astronomical wages if it meant that he could rediscover the feeling of belonging and comfort that he enjoyed at both Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.
