There are players out there who play for the love of their club and not just the money. I'm not sure Alonso is one of those guys but I can only see him playing for Liverpool if he returned to the EPL.

So if he loved Liverpool so much, then why did he leave in the first place?!?! Just sayin'

He left because of personal issues with Benitez (he made a big deal out of Alonso missing a game to be at the birth of his child and after a series of verbal altercations made moves to replace him with Gareth Barry), not the club.

90 per cent of footballers don't actually give a shit about their previous clubs or about rivalries, they're professionals and they play for a paycheck. I'd be very surprised if Alonso is any different.

At Liverpool I'd say only Stevie G and maybe Carragher are blokes who genuinely care for the club, and thats only because they're locals who've played their careers in just one place.

He's been gone for nearly 4 years now and he's still raising both of his sons as Liverpool supporters, he's said himself in several interviews that he still has a strong attachment to the club and whenever he gets the opportunity still comes to Anfield to watch games. He's kept his house in Liverpool too, for what reason I have no idea. The northwest isn't exactly a nice holiday destination! It doesn't mean he'll ever come back but he definitely still has a lot of love for the club. He seems like a very honorable guy and from everything I've heard from him, he wouldn't move to Chelsea or any other PL club out of respect to Liverpool. Ditto Daniel Agger who knocked back offers from City last season: "It is unacceptable to play for one of Liverpool's arch rivals".

Having said that, I don't think he's leaving Madrid anyway. He's 31 years old playing for the biggest/2nd biggest club in his home country, all this talk of him possibly leaving and moving to Liverpool or Chelsea was probably just started by his agent to give him more leverage at his next contract negotiations with Madrid (his contract runs out end of next season).

People around here and other forums were saying the same about Torres.

While I'm sure all Liverpool supporters hoped he would stay, I think most of us acknowleged that the only club he's ever really felt loyalty to was Atletico. Despite his best playing days being in a red shirt, he never went further than toeing the party line with regards to his feelings about Liverpool.

Personally I don't believe it, simply because footballer's lie and they do it often. Alonso may well like Liverpool as a club but I can't see him turning down opportunities elsewhere for it, especially if it means the 25K per week extra in his paycheck at an overpaid club like Chelsea.

Also your wrong about Agger, Liverpool - not Agger, knocked back a 20 million pound offer from City for him,and it was only then he came out and said he wanted to stay at Liverpool. You can't argue he rejected Man City when he never got the chance to accept.

Don't forget Gerrard wanted to leave Liverpool and almost joined Chelsea

My usual in the know website would be Goal.com and Caughtoffside.com.

Trolololol. :D

Throw in tribal football too :D

Forgot to mention the Sun is rubbish - used to be a fan of the telegraph until they started spreading rumours too.

Sky, the Guardian and the Chronicle (local newcastle paper) are the best IMO.

ADL9798 saw a few rumours mate that we are looking at your boy Spearing (who I believe is on loan at Bolton and earning rave reviews). Not sure how much truth there is but if he is at loan at Bolton, then presumably Rodgers doesn't see him as part of his plans? (He would still be pretty young though so maybe could be getting first team experience?)

What do you think of him? One of my liverpool mates rated him as one of the worst players he's ever seen last season (or might have been the year before) - we probably could use more depth in DM but don't really know a great deal about Spearing.

If you are looking at Spearing then your club is planning on being relegated. Has very little skill or size but a very big heart, effort will never be an issue for him.

P.S. He isn't French, no chance of joining Newcastle :P

Haha - in that case I hope we don't sign him (seems like my mate might have been right about him being pretty bad). Apparently is tearing it up for Bolton and winning rave reviews? Might be their player of the season or something.

Though, if he has a lot of heart, that's what we could use right now! Just hoping we can stay up :thumbsu:

The club were considering selling him as the offer from City was almost too good to refuse, but Agger made it clear that he wasn't interested in a move to City or any other English club - even going as far as tattooing YNWA on his knuckles to prove his point. If he really wanted to go and was solely driven by money as you say then he would have handed in a transfer request then and there and the move would have gone through . The quote I used before was taken from this article in February 2011 where Agger gave his opinion on Torres forcing a move to Chelsea:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/feb/10/fernando-torres-liverpool-daniel-agger

The Spaniard's move, triggered by a desire to leave Anfield, frustrated Agger. "It is unacceptable to play for one of Liverpool's arch rivals," he said. "For a Dane, it's about having respect for the club you play at. I am proud to be able to pull on my Liverpool jersey and will never go to another club in England. I would never go to Manchester United or Everton, for example. It's about a form of respect for the club.

So no, this isn't just a recent change of tack for Agger. He's always maintained that if he ever left Liverpool he would only consider clubs outside England, and from the sounds of things Alonso has the same attitude. I disagree with this idea that footballers are all just in it for the money, there are definitely players out there who would run over their own grandmothers for an extra few thousand a week but let's face it, at the top level they're all incredibly well paid to do a job that they love. Alonso is never going to struggle financially and I'd be surprised if he didn't have several post-football career options in coaching and the media lined up to keep the money coming in when he retires.

To be honest, for a player like Alonso who has won everything there is to win in the game, has nothing to prove as a player, and has never showed any indication that he's a mercenary type, I don't think Chelsea would be that much of a draw irrespective of whether they're offering him an extra 20-25k a week more. Personally I can't see him leaving Madrid anyway, he's still got 2-3 years at the top to offer them and I wouldn't be surprised if he saw out his playing days there.

May God have mercy on your soul.

No in all seriousness, he just won Bolton's player of the season and I think he's probably found his level. He's an upper-table Championship, lower-table Premier League type player. He definitely doesn't have a future at Liverpool and we'd probably be asking for £3-4m for him, but if Newcastle have aspirations of climbing back up the table I don't think he's the sort of player you should be looking at. If I had to describe him I'd say he's a tenacious tackler, high energy, good short passer but don't expect him to do anything extravagant as he's fairly limited technically, his work ethic has got him a hell of a lot further than his talent would indicate he was capable of.

He's not my favourite player to be honest as in my opinion he is the sole reason we lost the FA Cup last year. Every time he got the ball his awful first touch would let him down and he'd give the ball away, being directly at fault for both of Chelsea's goals before being dragged at the start of the 2nd half which funnily enough is when we started dominating the game.

Apparently he has been in ripping form and is Bolton's main man, he is taking free kicks for them i believe. Haven't seen him play this year, but he was woeful last year. Bolton want to keep him as well.

Cheers for the info, for 3-4m, I think we should be looking elsewhere (as he would most likely only be a squad player for us anyway). We already have Perch who sounds quite similar (high work rate, physical style, limited skills but lots of heart) and is also quite versatile (can play anywhere across the back as well as DM).

With a fully fit squad and full preseason into the team, I think our team is capable of climbing back into the top 10 again (provided we can stay up and don't sell anyone/adequately replace them!). Given our horrible injury record this year, if his wages were fairly modest and he is happy to be a squad player, I'd probably consider him (as we could use a few more English players/grunt workers in the team). He came through your academy/youth ranks didn't he?

That would be handy - we haven't scored from a set piece in something crazy (think Dec 2011...)

We are probably going to do a mini clean out so maybe might be worth a look.

if every player moved because a club is 'interested' in them then we'd be seeing players move every 3 weeks.

and the sun wouldn't know their head from their arse.

and surely riding on a snail boy will never play for a top flight club again. horrible player. shelvey's bad enough.

Shelvey has a lot more talent than Spearing though (not saying that Shelvey will necessarily make it at Liverpool but he has more quality than Spearing who is really just your archetypal hard-worker).

Do players that want to go to clubs playing Champions League want to just play in the comp or win the whole thing?
Realistically how many clubs have have a chance of winning it each year?
If Liverpool made top four this year I couldn't see players banging down the door to get in the place, just because we're in it doesn't mean we can do **** all in it.
Players will go to who ever offers them the most money, anything else is just a bonus.
