Time will tell whether they both end up being value for money.

I remember reading how stupid we were spending £25m on a defensive midfielder who can't get a game at Barca. Yaya proved to be worth every penny and more.

Also remember being told how Ousmane Dabo on a free transfer was going to be one of the best signings of the summer. He turned out to be not worth the price of the ink on the pen he signed his contract with.

The only issue relating to the price is that the signings are within our budget and enable us to meet FFP. Pretty confident on both fronts, so doesn't really bother me what they cost.

I think for the combined fees both are decent value.

Furious Barcelona have written to the Spanish FA after they lost three more teenage gems to the Premier League.
The Spanish giants have complained they need “support and defence of our rights against English clubs” after Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool snapped up starlets from their academy.
Liverpool are set to sign teenage winger Sergi Canos, 15, before he signed terms to stay at the Nou Camp.
Chelsea have beaten off interest from Arsenal and Tottenham to sign Spanish under-15 prospect Josimar Quintero.
Arsenal boss Wenger has won his battle with Tottenham and Manchester City over 16-year-old defender Julio Pleguezuelo, as revealed in Mirror Sport on April 16.
Barcelona want the Spanish FA to close down a loophole which allows their best youngsters to escape before signing professional terms. They claim the English FA gives clubs the same protection.
Arsenal have a long history of snapping up Barcelona’s best youngsters after signing Cesc Fabregas, as well as Fran Merida, Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral, from the Nou Camp’s famous academy in recent years.

Sounds like they're pretty upset about losing this most recent batch of players which I suppose must be good news for us, Arsenal and Chelsea! I commented on this earlier, this same loophole has also allowed us to take Suso, Dani Pacheco and most recently Pedro Chirivella (talked up in Spain as one of the most talented players Valencia's academy has produced in years).

The rules of the Spanish FA (designed to protect smaller clubs from having their players poached by Barcelona and Madrid by putting a hard ceiling on the amount of money all La Liga clubs are allowed to pay players before they turn 18 and can sign a professional contract) obviously do not extend to English clubs who have taken full advantage of the system and are offering these 15 or 16 year old players 4 or 5 times what their current clubs are allowed to pay them.

Because of this and the significant investment clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, City and United have put into their academies in terms of facilities and coaching staff in recent years, it is now seen as a very attractive option for elite level Spanish youngsters to move over to England and continue their footballing education. Interestingly as these players are coming over aged 15/16 they qualify as 'home-grown' by the time they turn 19 so there's really no deterrent to English clubs trying to fill up their academies with these players before the loophole is closed.

well it would be frustrating investing time and money in these players and having other clubs swoop in and take them due to a cap put in by your own fa. i think spanish clubs in general have every right to raise some questions.

reminds me of the marin/lazio situation where we just basically took him because players under the age of 18 in italy dont have contracts or something like that. minimal compensation too. they weren't too happy.

there's also a spanish player we've signed who's 15 or something, and even though we aren't required to pay any compensation we are to keep good relations or something.

it's not about sympathy, it's about common sense from the spanish fa.

it's not just about barca. it's about the smaller clubs, elche, depor, mallorca, etc, having top youngsters taken away for next to nothing. people won't listen to those clubs though.

a very different situation about messi. if barca hadn't of signed him messi likely wouldn't have been a professional footballer. barca paid for his growth hormone treatment.

just think if it was the club you supported, having players taken for next to nothing because the governing body puts a restriction on contracts. i doubt fans would be too chirpy about that happening.

Barca get kids from South America and put them in their academy and pay nothing for them.
Why cant we take barcas kids and put them in our academy?

they can't take kids for nothing from south america. messi is a very rare case. you can go through barca's academy and you won't find many outside of spanish nationality in most cases. kids at south american clubs, in 99% of cases, don't leave south america until they hit 18.

messi moved to spain as an 11 year old based on health grounds. if he didn't move to spain he may well have stayed in argentina and struggled with his deficiency.

I'm sure the Spanish FA will look into the rules, all it does from their perspective is provide an advantage to foreign clubs at the expense of Spanish clubs.

I think a minimum compensation type arrangement will at least provide some reward to clubs for their role in the development of players. And maybe compulsory sell-on clauses or bonuses if the player ends up succeeding.

I think Pozo is one we paid a fee for despite not being required to. I believe the fee could end up as high as £5m, but I'm not too upset that we've taken that approach.

The big majority of reserve and youth players are still Spanish.

Looking at Chelsea's reserves, 2 in 3 are foreigners.

It's a competition to get the best youth players, and sure, Barcelona takes kids from other clubs. But those clubs have often taken those same players from smaller clubs themselves. There is no difference between Barcelona signing a player from a 3rd division team and that 3rd division team signing a player from a regional amateur club.

I used to play in the youth academy of a Belgian top division side with regional pulling power. Up until the age of 10, we were all local players. When I was 12, my club was signing players from quite far already and the U15s and up would have players from anywhere, including abroad. This is how things go in football. Every club signs whoever they can get.

However there is a difference between beating other clubs on merit and size and beating them because of different rules. You can take as many Barca kids as you like, but if it is because you can offer them a professional contract while Barca can't, then it's just unfair.

And on a side note, that home grown rule is an absolute farce.
