Re: Varcoe to Return

Very pleasing to hear - everything you just said. I am happy that they are sticking to a structure that has worked all year.

Cheers for letting us know:thumbsu:

Re: Varcoe to Return

It's good to get an insight from someone in the know. Any word on Djerka?? Would love to see him get a senior gig by the end of the year.

Won't happen. Unlucky with injury and it is too close to the pointy end to be debuting someone IMO.

Re: Varcoe to Return

Couple of points...

I can't forsee Byrnes and Varcoe both being picked in the same team this season.

Hunt out for Varcoe? The balance in out team is very good at the moment and hasn't really been changed at all this season, I can't see that being thrown out by replacing a backmen with a forward??

Hunt wasn't on Farmer but still played off half back on the weekend, is that where Varcoe would have potentially lined up? I doubt it.

Hunt won't get dropped for Varcoe from here on. If he is omitted, it will have to be for someone else.

Byrnes for Varcoe in my opinion and Rooke will push someone out if he returns.

Hunt hasn't been too bad since coming in though.

I agree.

Thanks for the story Ezbian, very interesting.

Re: Varcoe to Return

I have been critical of Hunt on here in the past but I reckon Josh has been good this season. His strength will come in handy come September and now that he is having to earn his Hoops he is doing much better.

The Bomber shuffle has snuck in DJ and JHunt, with one of them being at a forwards expense (Chapman).
Coach has always had a propensity to bolster the backline at the forward lines expense. Ie the fans outrage leading to try Mooney at CHF last year.

Varcoe in for Byrnes, Rooke (ultimately) in for DJ, IMO. Chapman?

Clearly if both were picked in the same side on the weekend Brynes would have pushed up the ground. Perhaps they thought Byrnes deserved another chance?

Tudor was not saying Hunt will be dropped this week for Varcoe, he was merely speaking about Saturday's game. I would suggest the replacement will be Varcoe for Byrnes, when it happens.

I find it interesting that you are intimating that either of us are lying? Not sure what can be gained by that?

It is statments like yours that I was referring to in my last comment. Alot of what average joe on the streets or on this board says or think is happening is actually quite along way off the mark. Refer to the previous threads on Varcoe and look at the opinions on that. Rightly or wrongly they are poles apart from what I was told on the weekend. And yes everyone has there right to an opinion and is able to judge a player. But at the end of the day they are coaching the side, they have won 12 in a row, sit on top of the ladder, are premiership favorites etc etc so perhaps they are the most qualified to decide whether or not they want to replace a backmen with a forward.

Re: Varcoe to Return

This sort of info from Ezbian is fascinating. I don't think we believed that Varcoe had been dropped for under-performing - the Byrnes/Varcoe debate will continue - we are lucky to have them both but the venom spat out by some posters about the former is staggering. By the way, you might get a post from our mate in Hobart doubting your source as unsubstantiated!

Its funny that you say that. You sit on a plane for four hours and ask alot of questions and get off the plane and instantly think of another one. The rest of the season for Djerkurra was the one I forgot.

Re: Varcoe to Return

I thought they needed medical reasons to withdraw a player just before the game and add a late inclusion?

When you have a club doctor it's not very hard to get a medical certificate.

You can't possibly say he has had a good season. A solid few weeks, but he has spent a large portion in the VFL.

How so? I think most of what has been said about Byrnes has been on the money.

I think the key with Hunt is knowing his limitations. When he focuses on doing the basics - spoiling, getting the ball and giving it off quickly - he looks a much, much better player. It's only when he gets a bit ambitious that he stuffs up. Keep it simple I guess.

There will be some very interesting selection dilemmas in the coming weeks. Chapman must come back in ASAP. King will most likely replace Blake, possibly this weekend. And Rooke would be in our best team also. So it's going to be hard to predict who'll get dropped to make way. Byrnes is obvious. Not sure about anyone else though.

Re: Varcoe to Return

Good work Ezbian. Not sure how Leigh will feel having his conversation made public but we are happy you did. I expect to see your interview plagiarized in the HUN this week.

There sure will. There's going to be some players pretty stiff to miss out on finals I'd reckon.
Guys like Byrnes, Varcoe, Tenace, DJ, Hunt etc are probably good enough to be in a lot of teams starting 22, and have contributed in different ways to our position this year. It's a tough call to say to them that (if this becomes the case) they can't have a premiership medallion because they were 'only just' out of the top 22. That would suck.

I think they changed the rules, you have until the time the team sheets are handed in to do any changes you like and after that it has to be a medical reason.

Calm down champ, I didn't call anyone a liar.

I merely made reference to how the team's balance has been managed this year. Bringing in Varcoe for Hunt would not have been consistant with this..

Maybe you spoke with Tudor or maybe you didn't, I'm just going by what I see on the team sheet every week, not by what the average joe says.

Re: Byrnes vs Varcoe

Look it all depends on what is required on the day/weekend. Trav has such silky skills and is generally a good shot for goal, his finishing skills are quite good.

Tackling pressure is one of the major reasons why Trav was/is in the side, if we can pressure the backmen enough to make them dispose of the ball poorly, more the better for us.

Byrnes is ok too, has his ups, like his ability to take on people with his speed (when he has confidence). Sometimes he does lack that confidence and that is why he is always on the fringe.

His finishing is also quite average, which is difficult to put him higher than Varcoe, IMO. Also, Byrnes is hard to get a matchup for, as in he is difficult to match up with another player due to his size. He would struggle on taller wing and forward players.

Sure Varcoe is virtually in his first year, however I just believe what he brings to the team is a little bit more than Byrnes.

Don't be so FAIR!!! It will anger the bashers!

errr....what about Aaron Lord, Dermott Brereton ......?

He is good enough, if there is an opportunity get him in and start him in the middle. That would put the fear of god into an opposition coach because they already know how much depth we have in our midfield.

Frankly those willing Hunt out of the team are mad. We have been a better team since he came back. His solid body and ability to break and run the lines is very valuable. We wont win the flag without him in the team coz those sorts of bodies are needed.
