Ok, I am a big boxing fan, grew up with the sport, however in many sports boxing seems to be tied in.
For example, today Bruce likened the Port-Ess game to a Heavyweight fight, as they did last week with Ess-Nth. The swimming tonight brought up boxing and champions, Sheedy often likens games to fights and fighters, ie last week essendon copping a 'hit on the chin' and had to get up. On a preview of this mornings Wallabies game on sky news I think it was - again this was a clash of the heavyweight champions or something like that.
Many times in footy, rugby league, union, cricket etc I have noticed the comenatators saying such things as -
"they are on the ropes"
"they are backed into a corner"
"they just cant land that knockout blow"
"they just wont go down"
etc etc
I am wondering - is boxing the ultimate sport? It is probably the purest sport - but what is it about boxing that all sports seem to liken themselves, or at least situations, to it.
Is boxing the ultimate challenge for humans? two fighters, bringing in only shorts, gloves and vaseline in a ropped-off area who are aiming to land punches in order to KO or decision their oppononent - nowhere to run and nobody to help you - is this the ultimate?
It just got me wondering, and me and a mate were talking about it today - boxing seems to be associated with many things in life, ie in life - 'when you get knocked down, u get back up again!" etc.
Also - just about EVERY sport in this world uses boxing to assist fitness and co-ordination. I have been at many gyms and seen just about every sorta athlete come and do a bit of boxin - from footballers to gymnasts to swimmers to housewives trying to lose weight.
Im just wondering - is boxing the B]ultimate[/B] sport??
(u could probably generalise it to ring sports, ie boxing, kickboxin, thai boxing etc - all similar but different.)
