Honestly if Sandiland's carried on, he's have a free kick in just about every contest. His non calls continue to baffle me.

As well as the calls he does get. He got a free kick late in junk time last night that was virtually no different to about 20 other incidents in marking contests where he gets his arms chopped or head molested. My reaction was more disdain than anything else, as if they paid it deliberately to show that they are treating him fairly when the inevitable please explain comes through about how they missed the other incidents. Of course it was so late in the game that the free kick itself is irrelevant.

IIRC he comes to the Dockers as well during pre-season. I'm pretty sure all clubs are visited by at least 1 umpire during pre-season to go over the rules and interpretations.

Quite possibly although I think most clubs just get the DVD explaining the 'new interpretations'. It still changes nothing about having him umpire a game in which his friend is either a player or an assistant coach. The free kick stats when he umpires their games are a very good indicator that not everything is correct.

Does anyone know where the breakdown of individual umpire decisions can be located?

Would love to see what the breakdown was of last's nights game.

I doubt you could find such figures, but it is something the AFL should monitor to prevent bias.

Someone might be able to do a +/- frees for games per team involving each umpire. Trends could begin to show.

Certainly takes the wind out of your sails when we aren't playing great footy and you're getting crucified by the umps. Last night was the worst officiated game I've ever seen in 15+ years of watching footy. You just knew that the flogs were going to blow their whistles at any kind of contact on those bunch of Soft *****.

I know that you can somewhere. It's been presented on other threads in the past.

Unless someone goes to the effort of breaking down each umpires calls.

I think it was Stevic in a Dogs game, where he awarded 11 free kicks to one team and not a single free to another. Quite alarming in a 120 minute game, obviously AFL ticked it off.

Settle down, it wasn't that bad. It was probably more noticeable because the bulk of ridiculously soft calls were in front of goal, but i've seen a lot worse displays than that.

I think the damage was done in the first quarter. Clear Free kicks missed and soft free kicks awarded. After that the umpires didn't need to officiate one sidedly.

I remember round 1, 2001 against Carlton, the Carlton game in 2015 that Fyfe dragged us across the line, and the Bulldogs game a few years ago when we got 4 free kicks in the whole game. They were bad efforts for the whole game.

Wasn't that against us a couple of years ago in that game that we only got 4 free kicks for the match?

Na I haven't. I personally think that was the worst I've seen. Wasn't so much the free kicks that we're paid, but the ones that weren't. Jack Darling had 3 shots at goal at half time and all of them were from Free Kicks, they get given shots on goal for absolutely nothing. The umpiring wasn't the reason we lost the game, but it certainly played a part. The amount of Weagles dickriding the umpires do in Perth is absolutely disgusting. Kram, did I read correctly that Margetts was a groomsman at Cox's wedding?

The first clearance went into Freos forward line and a clear holding the ball not called. Then a straight transition to the wc forward line and a 12 point turn around.

How an umpire standing directly in front of Sam Mitchell couldn't see him throw the ball is beyond me. That was straight cheating

Jack Darling being handed 2 free kicks for 2 goals really hurt.

The game could have been completely different if these incidences didn't occur. WC were the better team but it's clear to see the umpires are allowed to help certain teams.

**** the afl I know why I spent my childhood surfing and smoking budz instead of getting worked up about a corrupt sport.

No it was definitely a game last year, that didn't involve us. The fact he supports the Dogs and if he umpired the game where we only received 4 frees just adds weight to the fact there's conflicts of interest in umpires.

I feel the same JMT, It's frustrating watching WC get given an armchair ride every second week and then having to cop the bullshit we do from the Maggots. We weren't as good as them, I get that. But when they add insult to injury and absolutely crucify us, it just makes it extremely hard to watch. If it weren't for Balic and the rest of the youngsters I wouldn't have enjoyed watching any of that game.

Very first non-call changed the game right there and then.

6-0 up is different to 24-1 down and effectively game over.

Was 8 frees to 2 early and game was over by quarter time.

I loved watching Balic last night. The young guys are a bit out of their depth but have so much upside.

What's just as bad as the umps is all my wc mates thinking the umps had no bearing on the match. I honestly have lost a lot of passion for the game. I'm like you and so many posters on this board who wear their heart on their sleave and hang out all week to watch Freo play.

Its all about where you get the free kicks to. No matter what we do we cant earn a free inside 50 even when mccarty had completely wrapped yeo up in the first 40 seconds which was a textbook holding the ball. Weak ass umpire didnt have the guts to call it infront of goals which could have given us abit of momentum while our mids were in top

The most frustrating thing in my opinion is how as a club and as a competition we put up with this bullshit. There's no other sport in the world with so many shit umpiring/referee decisions. (bar maybe Boxing). But the umpiring is never brought up and it genuinely should be, campaigners like Fisher and Margetts shouldn't be allowed to umpire. I don't think the umps lost us the game but like you mentioned, they certainly played a part. The two non called HTB's were absolutely farcical.

Yeah it's stupid. Jack Darling gets given all of his shots on goal due to free kicks because he's too shit to kick them any other way.

Yes and why did they have the guts to gift Darling free kicks?

Flashback to Adelaide v Western Bulldogs last season.
Close game all night, WB's kicked a couple of late goals to win the game.

Free kick count: Adelaide 12, WB's 28.
Umpire Pannell (played junior footy in Hoppers Crossing (WB stronghold), began umpiring in Footscray district) awarded WB's 17 free kicks to Adelaide's one. Don Pyke asked AFL for a 'please explain'. AFL found one or two incorrect decisions (normal for any AFL game), no further action required.

That's Troy Pannell you're thinking of, Stevic is the noted Hawthorn lackey (who of course we copped in both the GF and prelim against the Hawks).

After Adelaide fans brought those Pannell stats to light I went back and checked the umps in our Bulldogs game where we only received the 4 kicks. Yep, you guessed it...

It's clear as day that some umpires have favourite teams. I read somewhere that EPL refs have to declare their boyhood team and then aren't scheduled to do their games (though I couldn't find confirmation with a quick google). It boggles the mind that the AFL don't do something similar. Instead it almost seems like they actively do the opposite.

I wonder if the game would've panned out differently had Yeo being called HTB and McCarthy slotted the first goal of the game from that. That could've given the team a huge confidence booster and got the momentum going particularly as we were winning the centre clearances at the start.

Yep i copped a pasting from my mates and on facebook for even questioning the umpiring. It was pretty bad. They thought it was hilarious and i said "Geez it must be great to be an Eagles supporter and get handed games on a platter every second week." Every free kick we got after that they threw that back in my face. Even though our frees were mostly in the back half and theirs in the forward half.

I counted 6 goals from horrible calls their way. We were denied at least 3 shots on goals from non calls. We will dominate them in a few seasons and it can't come quick enough.

Yep, I'm the same. Used to love the sport but I can rarely watch a whole game that doesn't involve Freo these days because of the inconsistent, baffling umpiring. There once was a time where other than 1 or 2 occasions a game you wouldn't even notice the umps. Now they're front and centre bemusing the f*** out of every piece of play.
