You can talk about getting out of the Vickery contract all you want, but I'm sick of seeing posts referring to him as a potato or spud etc and its another example of the lack of respect shown the players who are in fact human beings and not plants.

Not sure why people are still taking personal pot shots at our players.

That aside, I wodner if it is made clear to him that based on his form this year, he is likely to spend most of the year at BHH next year, whether he would decide to quit the game and spend the year travelling the world with his partner, as she does the tennis circuit.

considering the year he has had on and off the field who knows what will happen.

I expect he will be at the Hawks next year, whether he spends most of it in the VFL is anyone's guess, I have no idea what the list will look like next year

I am suspecting some decent changes to our list again so I will have a crack-

Retired
Hodge
Gibson
Delisted
Willsmore
Whitecross
Trade options
Puopolo (second round pick)
Frawley (hopefully used to get Lever)
Vickery ( anything)
Breust (if we are any remote chance of a big fish then he and another player may be used)
Schoenmakers (let him go to free agency and thank him for his service)

Hodge, Gibbo, Fitzpatrick retired we now know.

Delisted there may be a couple of others - depending on whether Clarko wants to get a few Father/Sons. Willsmore really hasnt gone far. WhiteX should explore Brisbane or GCS for 2 final years - he still clearly has something to give. Schoey may head off to another club, because I cant see him keeping his spot with so many players to return and our kids clearly stepping up.

Not sure who gives a 2nd for Poppy. GCS would be the only one I can think of.

Frawley being traded would be just dumb. He should have 4 or 5 years left in him. Breust has always said he wants to stay. Who would we trade him for?

Vickery would only go back to Richmond - who need a tall to help Jack. But they would offer nothing. And would have to live down the mockery.

QFT. If you want to degrade your own teams players go support Richmond.

Definitely not condoning this... But do you think there is any truth to the rumour of Silk already organised a Sammy Mitchell style post-football coaching role back in Adelaide and the possibility of playing out his final year back at Power?

Having seen what happened last year, nothing surprises me!!!

May depend on how he pulls up next week and when port finish their season

Completely disagree - listening to Mitchell talk about footy he has obviously got an excellent footy brain. That is evident in the way he plays. Not that Hodge is all brute force and no footy smarts - I just think when it comes to footy IQ that Mitchell is a step above Hodge, but Hodge can make up for this by being an absolute competitor and a bit more of a hard nut.

Mitchell has already completed his coaching qualifications and has been setting up this path for years. I think his tendency to have been a shit stirrer in the past would need some adjusting in a coaching role - but I am sure he knows that more than anyone. I can see Mitchell becoming an excellent coach. I am not sure that Hodge will even go into coaching - dare say he'll make his money in the media instead.
I'm not sure Sam is much a natural Leader or man manager. He always came across as a guy happier as an individual unit then getting the team oriented and focused.
Just the feeling I got. Especially during the Capt. Changeover period.

No.

If we retire him that will be it.

I recently stumbled on the delistings at the end of 2011, when the club went and delisted 10-11 players all of a sudden. I'm thinking it's going to be a bit of a clear out like that again. The thing about that clear out was we ditched a lot of players we'd been hoping would come in and fill the gaps to win the next flag. Turned out we needed a whole other random group of ins that were not really on the radar.

I don't think we will be that ruthless this year. We already have a number of free spots, maybe a couple of delists of free agents leave. It cracks me up the posters suggesting that we delist our own 'depth' players that understand our system to recruit other 'depth' players that can't get a game at poor teams. Our players like this will attract little and are worth more to us. If we were only playing one or two of these players each game with a fit list we wouldn't have any issues, the reason we have had some issues this year is due to the massive number of injuries we needed to cover. Depth players from other poor performing teams will add little to no value for us, I would rather recruit kids.

Do you have any data to back that statement up? Or a sweeping statement based on snippets from the media?

I'd say if you base it off Melbourne, Brisbane, Carlton, St Kilda and others that it's definitely not a proven way to improve long term. In fact your good players get sick of not having success and leave for clubs like Hawthorn.

Surely we will go to the draft and pick kids,it's the proven way to improve long term.
Shortcuts get you nowhere except mid table mediocrity

I think you need both. Trading in good talent and free agents as well as recruiting kids. We have historically had a pretty good track record with this approach. I just don't think we will trade/delist players on the edge, just to recruit players on the edge from poor performing teams. It's different if we trade for these types if players from good teams that have a lot of depth, in these instances you have players that would probably be best 22 in most other teams but due to an abundance of talent they can't get a game.

No, other way around. Port Adelaide believed whit his toes to the club via himself and wife that he would entertain it.
Word is strong that a contract extension from Hawthorn is in front of him.
Silk will be spinning webs for the Hawks once again next year.

Someone should tell Graham Wright this. I mean you can only build a side by drafting! Look at previous premiership players Frawley, Hale, Gibson, Gunston, Lake, Guerra, Burgoyne and McEvoy - evidence that the draft is the only way to go!

.... or three premierships. BUt no, we need to be there for the long term.

If you're talking about trading for high picks and playing kids, it actually fails 95% of the time. its a proven formula for going from the bottom to mid table and back again if anything.

The top 4 favourites for the flag except for gws which is a one-off were all top 4 a few years ago.

Not to mention that Geelong have for years now continually stocked up via trades as opposed to going to the draft. Sydney have also, granted they were lucky with academy picks also - but they have also recruited players over the years to keep a competitive edge. Continually relying on the draft (Carlton, Brisbane, Melbourne up until this year, Gold Coast) isn't the sure thing people think it is.

GWS present a unique opportunity to trade them a player and pay a portion of the contract to get something of value. Richmond did very well to get what they did for Deledio. I can see a team getting a similar deal this year but im unsure whether we're the kind of club that would pay a player while they're playing for another side. Probably the only way we could land Kelly really.

the elite talent is in the 1st round after that luck kicks in
we need more burtons and less list cloggers the later picks get you, unless you luck out.
there is plenty of list cloggers on our list now.

Luck kicks in from pick 1 and carries throughout. There are no certainties in the draft.
