Re: Grrrrrrrr!!!!!

Playing for 4 and a half hours to get into the top 14, shoving 5/5 from the button after a hijack raise to get insta-called by 7/6o and lose.

FML.

Not really a vent, per se. Just a comment on the insanity of variance at shorthanded limit. In the last 48 hours, I lost and won (in that order thankfully) around $1k playing mainly 3/6 and a bit of 5/10. That's nearly 150 big bets each way. I can see why mdc doesn't play this game any more (and why 300BB is a woefully inadequate bankroll for multitabling shordhanded).

Running ridiculously bad lately, has to be close to my worst run to date. In the money 2 out of my last 40 MTT's, and those 2 cashes were just a $5 rebuy where I won a $200 ticket, and effectively a min-cash 7th/109 in a $50er for $250. Down around $2k and counting.

And this is why you wonder why you grind for 2-3 hours to get yourself up a few buy ins. A little history - a few hands prior to this I had raised pre-flop with 77 only for this guy to call and then shove $12 all in (to a pot of about $0.80) on a flop of JT2. I obviously folded and here is my chance to stack him. What flipping bull****.

**** me sometimes poker gives me the shits. Grinding away and doing pretty well with some nice fish at the table, when a new player starts overbetting pots etc and so obvious he is bluffing big. Caught him out once and added a nice chunk to my stack and he starts the abuse. Shortly after I have top pair and a straight draw on the flop. He moves all in and I call. He has nothing but a flush draw and nails it on the river for about 2/3 my stack. Of course the abuse increases. A few hands later I have AA and smooth call, then bait him into coming over the top all in with 47os. Flop is J77 and nicely rounded off with a 4 on the river. Shit a brick.

Never posted in this forum...but dude. Really?

The latest bit of misery: 0.5/1 PLO, $160 stack. I pick up JT87 double suited and raise from the cutoff. BB reraises, I call. Flop comes J75 rainbow. Top two, dry board, villain likely has an overpair so I checkraise pot. He shoves. I snap call, because really, what can he have? Oh wait. KJ97. Board goes running queens to hand him the scoop.

Pretty standard I suppose, except that I am now $5k in the hole in the space of about 45 days and thinking very seriously about retirement.

Ouch.

A break is probably not the worst idea. PLO requires a lot of heart, and when you're running bad, that tends to disappear.

I'm still on my "break" after that -35 BI run I had last year. :o

**** me! A guy frustrated to blow up point by slow play and I was sitting pretty ready to cash in. :thumbsd:

Running the clock down to increase your standing shits me sometimes too, is there a poker term for that? This was particulalrly annoying because they were at it from hand 1. I usually don't mind so much near the bubble, because its understandable, but some idiots continue running the clock down on the final table.

**** me! Standard poker logic tells you that if you have second pair on the flop and top pair pairs the board on the turn, there is less chance that somebody called the flop with top pair. Seems right doesn't it? Even the commentators say so. So how the **** do you lose 8 ****ing times out of 8 in a day when faced with that same situation?

*rant escalation* While posting this I'm in the Omaha section of a horse tournament at the tail end and any decision costs big time. One guy obviously has a flush and I have a set with the river to come so I hang on to my nuts and call his bet with one other also in the pot. The board pairs to give me a full house and the betting goes around bet, raise, raise, raise etc building the pot to 81K. I start rubbing my hands together and watch in horror as the flush guy collects it all with a straight flush. **** a duck.

^^^^^

We can't predict the future from the past :) Theoretically, you could lose every session you play for the rest of the year ( though the odds would be very remote ).

Although it's not nearly as bad as some of the bad beats/runs stories in here, I got 4 outered by the same guy three times in 2 hours. Pots worth 6k, 3k and 3.5k respectively.

First hand A Q. Flop comes K J 10. Money gets in on the flop, villain has K 10 and hits book on river.

Second hand K 9. Flop comes Q 10 J. Money goes in on the flop again. Villain has Q J and hits book on turn.

Third hand 10 10 Flop comes 10 A Q. Money goes in on the turn Villain has A Q and hits Q on the river to give him Queens full.

That had never happened to me before and has never happened to me since. I hope it's one of those once in a lifetime things :(

Though I have been on runs online where I have ran 50 + buy ins below EV over a smallish 50k hand sample. That happened a couple of times. Been 20 or 30 buys ins below EV too many times to remember. I once calculated my EV odds from a live session of 10/20 and ran 16k below EV over 200 odd hands, though only lost 7k for the session. Poker is a harsh mistress sometimes.

I have seen a couple of disturbing graphs from mid and high stakes players on 2+2 where they run 100 + buy ins below ev over 400k to 500k hands. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of $$, sometimes millions of $$ below EV. Here are a couple of links below to make ya all feel better.

This is the sickest graph I have ever seen. 329 buy ins below ev over 1.1 million hands at 2/4 PLO.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/47/science-math-philosophy/325-bi-below-ev-i-need-your-math-skills-856853/

112 buy ins below ev.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/54/poker-beats-brags-variance/112-buyins-under-ev-778396/

Over 100 buy ins below ev.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/5...ance/runing-over-100-buyins-below-ev-1112036/

This is one of the sickest graphs I have ever seen. 60 buy ins below EV in under 30k hands. I mean, how the **** does that happen . P.S Check out Donkey Kings graph over a really small sample in the post below the OP. Nearly 10k bbs ( 100 buy ins ) below ev in a handful of sessions ( 13k hands ). That's ****ing brutal.

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/3.../60-buyins-below-ev-since-last-monday-701564/

And here is a variance simulator tool that is a nifty little piece of equipment you can have fun with.

http://www.evplusplus.com/poker_tools/variance_simulator/

The point I'm trying to make. Variance is a ****.

Bumping for today...

Some of the gold from the Burswood $440 Triple Chance today.

1) Lynn, an older player who is aggressive but just plays pretty bad for the most part, makes it 800 at 100/200 with 2.8k back. I make it 2k, she shoves I call. She has ATo, I have KK and lose. A few hands later she gets 30bb in with A5o pre and beats someone elses KK.

2) Same villian. She opens 2.5x from the button I call with 86s from the BB. Flop 663 with two spades. I check, she bets 4.5x, I shove 23x, she calls and wins with 55

Despite this, I work really hard and end up 4 handed (paying 3) with basically the equal chiplead with 2 other people, one of whom is Arthur who is an old 5/5 player and Aleks Lackovic. We all have around 110k with the shortie having 60k

I open the button with AQs to 9k at 2k/4k and get called by Arthur in the small and Lackovic in the big. Flop A64 Arthur just donks 30k because he is horrible at poker, Lackovic folds, I shove because Arthur always has between A7-AT and is calling, he calls with A9, river 9 good ****ing game.

Im actually pretty pissed because I played pretty good and didnt make a single mistake today which is unusual for me since I usually butcher a few hands badly.

Playing a $1.50 MTT after folding 3 hands in a row that would have won all three hands including two full houses I'm dealt A:spades:K:spades: I raise 5x big blind and get re-raised all in.
I figure I'm behind and up against AA or KK but I call anyway (this guy had been calling everyone donks and playing loose) he shows 4:diamonds: 6:diamonds: suited. He hits two pair and I'm out...
