I too was dissapointed by that effort from the Brisbane folk, Not sure if a Rugby thing was on at the same time though.

Thought for sure at least 22k+ would come.
I believe a Reds game was on. Still disappointing but with the way the team is going I guess you can only expect the members/die hard fans to turn up each week and some opposition supporters. Neutral sport fans in Brisbane are all on the Broncos bandwagon at the moment unfortunately!

Reds game was on at the same time. They were last years champs and needed a big win to guarantee the finals so not surprised the lions crowd was a bit lower than expected.

I heard there was 41000 at the rugby

It's amusing seeing Reds fans on the trains since they were absolutely invisible for many years until they started to play reasonably well. Brisbane is the home of the bandwagon fans.

Very true.

Yep, I reckon the Reds' diehard support group would total around 10-15k.

I still get to as many Reds games as I can (Lions games permitting),average crowd at Suncorp in 2009 would have been around 10-12k,around 35k this year. I would still go to games when they were shit but am more inclined to go nowadays - everyone loves a winner!

Roar crowds follow exactly the same pattern.

Our crowds will return as soon as we start winning games regularly, without a doubt.

My vent - 19,000 odd people turned up last night. So much for making the GABBA a fortress.

Usually I'm pretty spot on at estimating crowds when I'm at a game but I would have guessed about 22-25k. Seemed very odd that it was only about 20k. Not sure whether it's the Gabba being a better than average stadium at making the smaller crowds seem louder or the empty seats being spread out more with GA, but it definitely surprised me when it was announced on the night.

To put it in perspective, there were 14,000 at the Melbourne Vs. Freo at Etihad game.

Yep...just quietly that's a record crowd for Melb at Ethiad...Must have been a tourist weekend up at Bulla..

Absolutely, has always been the way. That is why our club can't be overly reliant on memberships and gate takings. The plus side is, when the side is winning, the crowds flood back. Qlders might be bandwagoners but they will really get behind the local team that is doing well, (almost) irrespective of the code they play. Once you have them, you at least give yourself a crack at keeping them.

Interestingly, the Reds have adopted a membership model which is enormously successful. They had 32,000 members in 2012. Sure, it is a shorter season and so a smaller financial outlay but the promising thing from a Lions' perspective is that maybe Brisbane/Qld people are starting to get used to buying club memberships. This hasn't been part of the Qld sporting culture in the past but things might be changing.

Down here in Melbourne we almost out numbered the Footscray fans so it's not just QLD that are bandwagoners.

Thought about starting a new thread just for this but that was ****ing DISGRACEFUL.

****ING DISGRACEFUL

The umpiring was so ludicrously biased at times that I couldn't help but think it was one giant AFL conspiracy.

The commentating was the worst I have ever experienced in the same unbelievably biased fashion.

And quite a number of our players were just as absolutely pathetic. Some of the efforts were just so piss weak poor. I will name a couple of players that stood out in that regard Patfull and Cornelius. Jesus Christ Cornelius refused to put in any effort when the ball wasn't presented on a plate.

And Browny was running around like a cripple, especially in that last quarter. Our overall game plan / lack of effort, and complete annihalation in the clearances was galling to say the least. And I was also furious that Voss didn't go down to the boundary line half way through that last quarter to try to still some bloody aggression into the team. We seemed content to let another one of these shockers slip.

**** the whole game made me so ****ing angry. At least Rocky shoved it all up the Gold Coast / umpires / AFL / commentators arses. How ****ing poetic!

(Yes there were also some very good efforts in the second half of that last quarter as well - Hudson, Black, Raines, Zorko and others helped save the day)

And while I am at it PISS OFF Gold Coast - someone called them a plastic club - that is what they are. In fact they are a fake plastic club.

17,000 is just a pathetic effort (if it was really 17,000?????????????), especially when at least half of them were Lions fans. Well done AFL - things are going swimmingly in QLD - Gold Coast with 11,000 members and the Lions with 20,000 and both clubs currently financial basket cases (if you strip away all of the b/s and see the reality).

Agree the Maggots wanted them to win with another special K moment.
Same with the St Kilda game(they want that pack of Flogs in the 8). Umpiring is the starting to look the same as in the NRL with $%^ biased crap I can see a mile away. The holding the ball rule chance is &*^%ing me off big time.

To get over $%#@ umpires you have to dominate so the Maggots can get there hands on the game. It just depends on which way the umpires want the play to go, to give a team a leg up.

I like when you see the Umpires giving the Lions a real ruff Baised time yet we still stomp the team.
Example: round 1 this year they give James Mangner a free goal.

To be 100% fair, we got some pretty soft 50s in our favour. The difference was when we so desperately needed a break in the last corner, we got nothing but horrible calls.

Sorry Irish, your boy is not up to it.
must admit was hoping for 3 goals from him ! only listened to it on radio but he seemed to do ok up the ground a bit just didnt kick a bag . however all forwards seemed to struggle you would have thought it was a mud bath !

Attitude and disposals slid back today. Badly. Lions spent it before they had it, and then scrambled to get across the line. Brave in the last 6 minutes, but piss poor effort to necessitate that.

This so so much. I can't believe this was the same team that gave us 4-5 weeks of solid form previously.

What about when Brennen was talked early in the last Q, place the ball on the ground and then threw it one handed...

One of many examples in the last quarter. The Hudson non-mark and the Maguire "delibrate" can be added on as well.
