Richmond were all over Freo in the first few minutes last night. Ross Lyon pushes numbers back. Damage limited to 3 goals behind. Freo start to find their rhythm. Game opens up a touch. Freo fight back. Freo win. I love you Michael Voss but surely there is a lesson here.

I know it is a vent thread, but that is a reasonable point - we never seem to do that (put numbers behind the ball to limit the opposition's run on).

Part of me wants to believe that this is because the coaching staff don't want to flood the backline in the early stages of player development but another, much more persuasive part of me believes it is because our coaches are just so damn slow to react to the game.

This game was a disgrace. What happened to our lack of effort, or the dropped tackles or the running in waves of one. Or playing for one's spot in the side. If I see any more games where we function as a team, and actually look like we care I will be microwaving my membership. That's a promise. Bring back the dis-functional team that I've grown to love... pleeeease.

We don't have a great history of reacting to the game events, so it could be that. I think most of it though is simply getting the team to stick to structures. We are young, and they need to learn as players and as a team to stick to their roles. We can't flood back every time someone kicks a few on us, the boys will never learn to impose themselves on the game. Teaches them to be reactive to their opponents. It's a fine line with the coaching staff at the moment between game tactics trying to win, and trying to teach. I think we are still in a teaching phase, and this is why we often don't seem to switch to plan B or C. We aren't good enough to have 1 game plan yet, nevermind 3 and be able to switch between them.

On the other side, a lot of the time we get thumped because we simply turn the ball over too much, which also flooding back doesn't help. Boys gotta learn to play a bit of tempo footy, and keep the ball off the other team when they are hot.

This is just a vent that I need to let out as a Victorian Lions supporter, a bit fed up with how we are treated by the AFL and the media down here mostly. The lack of understanding in Victoria and what we have copped the past few years is concerning to say the least, and it is a trend that continues with the Lions.

We have lost a few players the past few years to the go home factor or poaching that would be really handy right now:

Rischitelli Club B&F to the Suns
Brennan, walked to the Suns for more $$
Mitch Clarke, wanted to go back home to WA, ended up taking more $

Adding them back into our team right now would add a lot more experience and fill areas of concern as opposed to having to play 9 players with less than 25 games experience last weekend against Melbourne.

The media continue to speculate on our players availability as if it were some kind of game, imagine Rich on the outside of the amazing GWS mids as Luey taps it down their throats, or Hanley streaming out of defence for that matter. When they get bored with our stars they turn to our up and coming players saying Polec is homesick and wants to go home, Karnezis misses his Mum's cooking, (which I sadly even heard regurgitated by a coach of my son last week in Thornbury) and even our club Veteran's/Legends are not safe with Brown apparently off to Collingwood.

Are we an easy target cos we are so far away and don't exist in the AFL heartland, or are people just maybe still a bit jealous we went back to back to back, so we have to do it to hard for a bit? Whatever it is, it's time for the AFL and their media mates to grow up and start seeing things as they are!

We are a struggling, cash strapped team, with a whole lot of issues we are trying to work through. FFS we can't even afford to pay our full salary cap while other clubs around us get given new stadiums, elite players and million dollar a season Ruck/Forwards.

Ok, that feels better.

I can't even get angry!! Just laugh every time we turn it over. We have learnt nothing from the North Melbourne and Bulldogs games.

agreed. i can't help but laugh too. it's just beyond ridiculous now. i just hope that if we keep getting flogged then surely major changes have to happen!

This year against real AFL teams we just get smashed.
And we get totally smashed where we give other teams NEW broken records FFS.

We just fell over the line against the SUNS. If the Dee's weren't having another
season from hell we would be the basket case talk of the town.

We are a basket case at the moment.
The team does not show up for first quarters (for years) then puts in some effort later on to collect the pay check. So sick of this ****.

Hard at it from the word go.
Junk time does not count !!!

The number of times in the first quarter where we'd have three players go to the Swans player with the ball, leaving their players free in the immediate vicinity was mind-boggling. Gave them easy handball receives right through it. Improved no end in the second quarter, but the game was lost by then.

This is something that annoys me, yeah sure, help out your team mates, but for gods sake, if we have a two on two situation and your team mate has the ball carrier cover, don't go over to help him, it only takes one person to make a tackle and/or force that person to dispose of the ball. Go over and man up the other guy so they can't get away with it. Too often in contested situations 2 or 3 of our guys will get sucked into the contest and/or the ball carrier leaving players open on the outside, giving them easy outs. We need to simplify things a bit and play some man on man footy i think.

I admit i during that game i looked forward to the retirement of Brown, simply to force our guys to find another option. Although, i dare say even when he is gone, they will still do the same thing it is so ingrained in our players. Why do we try go inside 50 kicking to a contest from HB? That kick needs to come 30-50m further up the ground.

Just another thing our young guys have to learn to the point that it becomes instinctual.

There is a lot they have to consider in any situation and it must get overwhelming having to remember and process it all at once as well as running till you spew and getting smashed by blokes bigger than you.

Just got to keep going out there and try and do as much right as you can until it becomes second nature.

All 100% correct; we are an irrelevant member of the AFL. Can't see it changing for a while too. We'll get a few players picked off at seasons' end - you can guarantee it.

No membership / money / development = Brisbane Lions post 3-peat.

Voss will go in 2013, be it at the end or before; he's gone. That's a good start to fix a few of the problems - need a high profile replacement. Don't really care where the ca$h comes from, but it needs to be found or we're where we'll be for a long time yet :footy:

why is it we start games so flat ? not the first time this season we have had no inspiration , i do wonder if this team is motivated to perform for the coach. how can a team like that be so far behind the 8 ball, our list isnt that bad , must be some bad juju going on behind the scenes !

Does this high profile replacement have a time machine so we can get 50 games into players like Green, Karnezis, Mayes and Longer?

Need a coach who can develop players AND gameplan for all opposition teams before AND during the game. Don't care for sexy or popular. WANT GUY WHO CAN JUST WIN.

Part of me wonders if we trained too hard pre-season.
I have wondered for weeks if there is some off field stuff going on.
Even some bad blood between Rog and Patfull a few times. Dis-unity would explain a lot.
That's hardest to fix, so I hope that's not the case.

Apparently quick playing on is part of our game plan.
Unfortunately some guys think play on means handball or kick as soon as you get it.
Has been happening plenty all season, but a good example again today, Polks has the ball and offloads almost immediately to a teammate. Problem was that Polks had time and space to run the ball but elected to give to a mate who had 2 opponents right beside him.
Well what's the ****ing point of that??????
I don't mean to pick on Polks (I'm a fan and prefer him in than out of the side) ( and plenty of others are guilty), just one example that really stood out today.
As I say, it happens plenty as if the mentallity is to move it on as quickly as possible with no regard for options. Players giving it off when they don't have to, just so they've shared it, is driving me nuts.

I did wonder same in the first quarter when Sauce didn't seem interested in his usual Hurculean effort to spoil Pike and Swans players were allowed too much freedom to line up for goals. Has Voss lost the leadership group?
