Yeah, it is tough to get enough umpires to make it to Div 3.

Problem lies squarely with the junior clubs.

I have been out of the loop for about 3 years now, but we were finding it hard to retain junior umpires due to the abuse received at the junior level.

Even had a call from a young umpire who claimed he couldn't exit the rooms as there were people who were threatening him. When I told him to hold tight and I would contact the club president, he told me not to bother, as he was one of the ones handing out the abuse.

How do you teach kids that are giving umpiring a go that this game is great, and umpiring is a great pathway for people to become involved when that is their earliest experience.

I have been blessed over the years that umpiring taught me so much while letting me be involved at a level of football that I would not have achieved as a player. There are so many like me out there, who love the game and would make excellent umpires, but keeping them on board is getting harder and harder.

The tide is turning I believe. Brisbane's junior set up at the time was far ahead in tacking these problems than down here, the sooner the parents, officials etc work out that the umpires at junior level are just like the players at junior level (i.e.. learning the game with dreams of the MCG and September) the better our great game will be.

I honestly wouldn't invest time or let my kids be exposed to an environment where the president of the club is perpetrating bullying and abuse, that's just ridiculous.

Great to hear your club is run well.

My opinion was always that the Brisbane clubs were much, much better than the ones down here.

Having said that, there are also some clubs down here that are run fantastically at a junior level, Southport and Broadbeach are great examples of how to run a junior footy club.

Only one game in and I'm confused by the umpiring.
It looked as though they have a directive to "let things go".
Plenty of tackles finishing in the back and few HTB rewarded. Also was plenty of contact below the knees, and high contacts, left unpunished.
For many, this will delight as there is a return of freer flowing, let the small stuff go, style adjudication, but like it or not, the rules or rather their interpretation is far stricter than those that allow that sort of play.
Why make rules tougher "to protect the player" then make a conscious effort to let them go?

Make the rule, then pay the rule.
One walked through point lastnight was straight out of the 2014 video of what constitutes an offence for a deliberate rushed behind.
Tom Harley kindly explained to us that a tackle wasn't rewarded because the player made an attempt to dispose (completely irrelevant as the player had plenty of prior opportunity). As I've said ad nauseam, all well and good to let the little things go, but I will hate to see our boys robbed of free kicks when grabbed around the head or unrewarded for good tackles.
