What do we have to do to put you in a great thread today! Take one for a test drive? Sure! We have a nice thread that is only contributed to by a little old lady on Sundays. Low miles, good condition, no trolls...

You've hit bedrock bottom. That post rocks.
Have not heard this directly but am hardly surprised after recent discussions I have had down here on the GC.
What level of clubs are we talking about here?

Yeah, it is tough to get enough umpires to make it to Div 3.We're a Div 3 team and have to supply, not sure about the higher divisions.
Yeah, it is tough to get enough umpires to make it to Div 3.
Problem lies squarely with the junior clubs.
I have been out of the loop for about 3 years now, but we were finding it hard to retain junior umpires due to the abuse received at the junior level.
Even had a call from a young umpire who claimed he couldn't exit the rooms as there were people who were threatening him. When I told him to hold tight and I would contact the club president, he told me not to bother, as he was one of the ones handing out the abuse.
How do you teach kids that are giving umpiring a go that this game is great, and umpiring is a great pathway for people to become involved when that is their earliest experience.
I have been blessed over the years that umpiring taught me so much while letting me be involved at a level of football that I would not have achieved as a player. There are so many like me out there, who love the game and would make excellent umpires, but keeping them on board is getting harder and harder.
The tide is turning I believe. Brisbane's junior set up at the time was far ahead in tacking these problems than down here, the sooner the parents, officials etc work out that the umpires at junior level are just like the players at junior level (i.e.. learning the game with dreams of the MCG and September) the better our great game will be.
Thread severely lacking in
the whole board is loosing it ! ha too much white line fever , people are jibbering complete c@#p we need footy fast !!!!
bring on round 1 ! we need the release
bring on round 1 ! we need the release
Great to hear your club is run well.Ironically, we have loads of Junior umpires who are keen to umpire, but for obvious reasons can't do it for seniors.
What you've said there about abuse etc is pretty disturbing and absolutely nothing like the junior environment I've encountered in the last couple years. I honestly wouldn't invest time or let my kids be exposed to an environment where the president of the club is perpetrating bullying and abuse, that's just ridiculous.
