Nice feature article about Jack Crisp (on the Lions page) in the AFL Record this week.

In summary it says:

1)He's gone from a rookie to the Lions' best 22 in six weeks

2) in the disapointing loss to the Bombers, he was a shining light, collecting 16 disposals and two goals

3) (Quote): ......"it's not so nerve racking anymore....I'm just starting to get a feel for the game"

4) he was "itching" to play Collingwood tonight, hoping the Lions could break their drought against top eight teams

PITY THE AUTHOR DIDN'T MENTION THAT HE WAS DROPPED FOR THE GAME!

Now my vent is not against the writer of the article but at the abject stupidity of "rewarding" a young player who performed at a high level in such a way.

Another in a series of perplexing team changes and positional hatchet jobs.:thumbsd::mad:

FFS.....pick the side on form and play the players in position!!!

PS. For crying out loud: give Banners a run in the two's.....he current from is woeful

I must admit it was a bit mystifying to see No.47 running around in the 2's yesterday.

Crisp is one of the few young players we have who look and act as a natural footballer.

Never mind- as I said to my companion it won't take long for us to get that out of his system. Forgive my cynicism after last night.

redden was the main culprit in the first half, handballed to players who were right in front of a collingwood player
...

Yeah, Redden was killing me last night with that. Look he is a good player and tries pretty hard, but take some ****ing responsibility for once and stop putting your team-mates under pressure.

Kick it yourself!

God I hate it when we do that - Banfield is a bit of culprit as well - often looking to hand it off backwards even when there is less pressure if you just look forward and kick it yourself straight away.

I don't mind us handballing when it's the best option, but seriously a lot of the team need to step up and grow some balls. If you make a mistake kicking 40m forward, so be it. Better than ****ing things up closer to the opposition's goals.

(On the other hand the blind kick forward is bloody frustrating too. All I am asking is for players to first look forward when they have the ball.)

Even though Redden is a culprit for doing that.

He shouldn't be in the firing line, Thought Redden was once again BOG.

In the modern game players are instructed - read they will get dropped if they don't it - to handball to the player coming past/ through. The ball giver is not responsible that the receiver has a clear pathway.

It is the receiver who needs to be ahead of the play and not to call for it if he can't make a better option than his team mate who has the ball.

The other allied issue was players hand passing over the man on the mark or an opponent in general play - too many touches/ smothers by Collingwood players.

The real 'sin' would be to go back into our shells and not to try the 'run and gun' we so desperately need.

Dicko

Dicko,

If I am on the lead or taking a mark knowing an opponent is near me, I don't ever handpass the ball to someone running right by me. That is footy 101, got nothing to do with the modern game, it has to do with understanding what is actually happening around you.

I agree you need to take the game on but you still need to follow the basics of footy.

The reality check I experienced after using my spinning top totem straight after Beanpole Wood's snap was dreadful.

Too many times we tried to find the perfect exit out of centre bounces - get it on the boot! Its the only situation in the modern game that you know there will be 50/50 contests inside your forward 50.

If I were to have a collective vent over our playing group, it's that we have too many foot soldiers and not enough class.

Too many ball-watchers not enough ball-hunters. Guys waiting around for someone else to do the dirty work or hoping the ball spill out to them.

Too many handballs that go below a players knees.

Too many pea-hearted smother attempts. Dive at the ball and be willing to cop a knock to the scone and wear it as a badge of honour.

The only real sense of urgency you get from the players is when they actually win the ball and want to bang it on the boot as soon as possible.

Was pleased to see when Zorko was on screen he looked like wanted it the most out of anyone on the ground.

Granted he had a bit of trouble getting it at times but it will come.

Why do we handball to a left footer on his right side so many times?

Actually, maybe I am jumping the gun a bit, sometimes we even handball to right footers on their left side:o

Exactly. A bit of hustle...

The 1st and 3rd paragraphs are the ones that "get my goat" the most when watching games. The ball will be on the ground in the middle of a pack and you'll have an opposition player diving to get it,while 4 of our players are standing still waiting to tackle him or receive the ball. With the smothering thing, you'll notice a lot of the time Lions players not making a genuine attempt to smother, rather they will go through the motions and fein a half hearted arms in the air well after the ball is kicked

There was a contest in the 2nd half at some point, RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, where Black & Polks both sheparded the loose ball on the ground, then looked at each other as a Colliwobble ran through, picked the ball up, without having a finger laid on him, and kicked it down to their HF line. Was sad to watch.

Too many handballs that go below a players knees.

Amen. As TBD said earlier, it was like watching a team full of Sherman's.

The girl I was with had never seen a live game of footy in her life. At half time she asked me two questions that summed things up. "Why are all our guys compressed around the ball, and leaving the other guys to run away all the time", and "why do they keep trying to hand pass to each others feet"...

Sounds like Angus is having a bit of a vent himself. Good to hear the very frank assessment though, and the high standards that are expected. Really think the problem lies with the players more than the coaches or off field staff right now. We were competitive in most games last year because the players would accept nothing less. That's not something that can necessarily be coached, but is instead an attitude that either exists or doesn't.

"I think there's a few players at the Brisbane Lions who really need to have a long, hard look at themselves and ask themselves, are they making the commitment that's needed to be successful in the AFL," Johnson said.

"I'm not convinced that everyone on our list understands what you need to do to be an elite footballer.

"We'll be relying on the playing list management committee and the football department to make recommendations on who we trade and who we don't trade.

Very brutal words. I wonder who in particular he's talking about. Banfield would have to be mentioned.

It's always a bit concerning when the Chairman says the coaches job is safe....History shows that once an AFL coach is backed by the Club Chairman/board usually end up sacked shortly after.

Johnson said Voss's job was safe as he was doing all he could with a young playing list and some significant injuries.
"We only recently renewed his (Voss's) contract.
"We extended it for two years so nothing has changed as far as I'm concerned or as far as the board is concerned," Johnson said.

I don't know about the significant injuries part of Johnsons statement. We've 1 ruck man and Staker out. Fine players, but a lot less than most clubs

I know this is a vent thread and I had mine earlier, but I am really pleased for the Chairman to come out and just bluntly say what he did. I just hope they follow through with it. There are guys like Goose on our list which for all their faults are absolutely committed, there will be others off first.

I'd normally agree that it is a concern when they say that.....but he has given quite a few reasons why MV is safe and went on from there..

Normally they would just say "He has our full support" then whammo!

I think from that article, things are as they are stated, in our case..

Yeah, agreed MM. Doesn't sound like the "uh-oh!" kind of Chairman's statement of support to me.

They are clearly going to assess him at the end of the season against the development clauses. Those hoping for a mid season sacking are going to be disappointed.

Unfortunately it won't be the one that should be....
