I mentioned in the Game Day thread yesterday that the coverage of the game was really average. There was far too much cutting to the 'coach cam' or a replay which resulted in the broadcast being behind play on numerous occasions.

I don't want to see Neil Craig observing the game through his binoculars!! I want to see the stoppages, who clears the ball, is it to our advantage etc ... particularly in a close game...

Frustrating.

I'm sure someone mentioned some time ago, but whatever happened to older and mature age umpires in their early 40's and older, guys like Peter Cameron and Goldspink etc?

I'm sure the same person mentioned that the AFL Umps Dept. favours endurance runners over guys with a genuine knowledge and feel for the game unlike the majority of these young umps who IMO have no bloody idea or feel for the game. I'm honestly in the camp that umpiring has gotten significantly worse over the years. No doubt the faceless umps coaches have to wear some of the blame considering they no doubt direct the umps not to pay HTB/incorrect disposal or whatever the flavour of the week is etc, but even the inconsistency b/w what is paid to two opposing teams in the same game is worrying and I'm not just isolating that thought to Lions games.

Absolutely 100% correct. I umpire in the VAFA and the blokes who are moved onto the VFL academy are the runners and not the thinkers.

Didn't get to see the game but it sounds like another terrible run from the umps! Oh we'll at least we know they'll be neutral in Adelaide next week.

We seem to have had a bad run with umpires, and I have no idea why. But there is one thing I am certain of, and coming from watching at least 2 games of live footy each week (one AFL, one NEAFL as a minimum) that each game throws up far too many decisions where I look at them and think, "does this guy even know what it is like to be a player?"

I'll take 100 errors from a Jordan Bannister over one from a Matthew Nicholls.

But there is one thing I am certain of, and coming from watching at least 2 games of live footy each week (one AFL, one NEAFL as a minimum) that each game throws up far too many decisions where I look at them and think, "does this guy even know what it is like to be a player?"

I'll take 100 errors from a Jordan Bannister over one from a Matthew Nicholls.

Perfect example of this was our game against North.
Dying minutes with North down by a couple of kicks and they get pinged for deliberate OOB. Now, they needed to kick a couple of goals in under 2 minutes, why would they deliberately put the ball out of play when they had it in their hands. (lucky for us as it sealed the game) but still.
