From the AFL website

2.12pm: A small win for the Giants. Key defender Justin Clarke, 19, is set to buck the trend of homesick youngsters and sign a three-year deal with the club.

Doesn't surprise me, used to all the media **** ups. And these people get paid for this crap.

Yep, ridiculous comparison.

Outside of the AFL, most boys in their chosen sports pursuing a professional career in order to reach the top do have to move away at a young age to pursue their sporting ambitions; be it 14 and 15 year old kids doing football apprenticeships at clubs in the UK and Europe, not to mention 18 and 19 year old kids attending US colleges to play basketball, baseball etc etc, not to mention all the kids in the US who move interstate to attend college or hell even kids under 18 attending the AIS for a couple of years or even Tassie and Irish kids just playing AFL on the mainland...there is just so many examples of young kids or adults moving interstate and/or overseas pursuing their dreams not requiring their mothers bosom that actually suck it up and build lives for themselves not requiring primary school friends and any other hanger on telling them how good they are and inflating their egos...so forgive me for calling these precious blokes "sooks".

Most people I've ever known have busted a gut to move out of home and grow up...just a pity Rob Kerr couldn't identify it, would have saved a lot of heartache.

I know I'd take $100k at home over $100k a couple of states away if I could. Does that make me a "sook" to you lot then? I love knowing my mother is only a couple hours drive away and that I can go home whenever I like.

-Happily a sook.

Isn't 'basketcase' the same term that Gary Lyon used to describe port last year, around about the time they were sorting out their board and appointing a new and untried coach.

'Basketcase'.

An overused term used by lazy journalists and media identities to grab a headline. Akin to the 'worse than Fitzroy' tag applied to various teams over the years.

Did you enter a competition where the reward was substantial pay but you could be sent anywhere?

By entering the Defence force my father committed to going where he was posted and got good $ to protect the country he loves.

This is a better comparison, but from what you've said he quit his job to move them back. These kids are letting their business invest in them, bring them up to speed, and then quit about when they're expected to start producing instead of repaying that investment in them. Yes, they can do that, just like they can outside the AFL, but is it reasonable to expect the business to be happy about it? The response is the same whether it's hiring in a normal business, or members of an AFL club. It's frustrating in both cases.

Don't agree with what you're comparing and I'm not one who's called the players sooks etc though so not going to go any further with this.

The fact is, people shouldn't be blasted for wanting to move back near their family. You don't know what the situation is. Defence probably wasn't happy with my Dad giving up being a trained technician to work behind a desk so he could stay in Oakey, but he had to put his family first.

It would probably be different if these players had kids to take care of in another state.

Kids or no kids, we don't know the story, why all the hate for wanting to be close to family? I don't have kids but I certainly appreciate being a few hours away from my parents, and I certainly wouldn't willingly move anywhere further, even if I was offered good money.

I agree with Kezz here. If we look solely to and blame the individuals for what's happening then unfortunately its going to happen over and over again. We need to work with the AFL so that QLD/BRIS and the Lions is a destination people want to find themselves at and where they're happy to stay.

(obligatory vent): what's happened to society these days *shakes fist*

I wasn't going to keep replying since this is the Vent thread, but given you're posing the question... :)

Because, in your analogy of your father, we're the Defence department. We're put time, effort and emotional attachment into these kids and right when we're about to see the best of them they quit. Of course people are going to get emotional, just the same as my boss would have found it annoying if I'd joined, spent six months getting brought up to speed and then quitting.

First off I'm not pretending to know the story, I am however extremely disappointed we will potentially lose 3+ high draft picks. Having said that...

I think the point is that these guys know there is a chance they will have to move interstate to do their profession. They are interviewed, drafted and invested in with the knowledge that - if all goes well - they will be required at the club for a long period. The frustrating thing for supporters is that this investment is completely wasted after only two years and also the fact that we will not get anything close to what they are worth in a trade.

I lived overseas for a while and yes, homesickness is a very real phenomena. However when it comes to being a professional, moving away from home is, at times, to be expected and these guys knew that when they applied for the draft.

BTW there are plenty of stories about potential draftees telling clubs they don't want to be drafted by an interstate club; Cyril Rioli and Elliot Kavanagh come to mind. If they had of done this we could have used the pick on someone who wants to be here.

This is just my opinion and like you said, there might be more to it. But to lose such promising talent so soon after drafting them warrants a somewhat strong reaction IMO.

The torresian crow who chased a possum under my car in broad daylight and held me up for half an hour as I tied to get the poor little critter of the back axel. I'll give that crow "Faaaaark" if I ever get back to Bribie Island.

Sam Docherty continues to be linked with Carlton and the Western Bulldogs. Both clubs have been "very active" in pursuing the disgruntled Brisbane Lion with Petroro expecting things to play out in the "next day or two".

I know it should be water off a duck's back by now, but I'm tired of seeing players like Yeo and Docherty described as 'disgruntled' just because they want to go to another club. No one calls Crameri or Dale Thomas disgruntled

Tend to agree although one definition of disgruntled is to be "in a state of sulky dissatisfaction" which might describe some of them pretty aptly don't you think?
