The media under rating us is starting to get to me. I understand that they think teams like West Coast, Adelaide and possibly the Gold Coast will jump us but there will also be teams that slide. And it's ridiculous to put us in the same grouping as St Kilda, Melbourne and GWS. We really haven't lost much from last season apart from a bit of depth and our core midfield group will only improve this season.
And to say Leppitsch is the worst coach in the AFL is stupid and a great example of how the AFL gets too much media coverage so they have to come up with stupid ideas like trying to rank the coaches. Ken Hinkley probably would've been ranked 18th at the start of last year according to Jon Ralph but ended up being the best coach (arguably).

Meh, the mass of of "we rank the top 18 players, coaches, forwards, backs, most overrated/underrated, toughest, most x-factor" articles at this time of year all become background noise for me.
With the exception of Mike's top 50 which has become a bit of a tradition and a laugh, they are the product of lazy, uninspired journalists writing for readers who think Buzzfeed lists count as journalism. Says more about the lack of talent of Jon Ralph then the people he spuriously ranks.

The upside of course is that Leppa can only get better in terms of media appreciation of his performance. Being ranked 18th before he has actually coached a regular season game is just bloody ridiculous and I am sure would generate some interesting humour and byplay between him and Lethal! Was it Leppa who reminded Lethal that he was only a 3 time premiership coach because of players like him...

I hope we get underrated until the day we next win a GF. Nothing subdues the masses like having wrong mashed into their faces on GF day. There are not many deep thinking analytical minds on some other team threads (unlike the thoughtfulness and calm deliberation of the Lions threads). Many people respond to the prevailing media narrative for each club eg. Collingwood are the biggest club so they must always be worthy of talking about. Gold Coast have Ablett and the cream of a generation so must be good...sometime soon. The Lions lost players and a coach so must be terrible.
These are simple people capable of simple analysis. The Lions role in the wider media narrative is "basket case". I am going to enjoy the ride from here because the narrative will change: basket case to reborn to contender to challenger to champion. I always wear the 2011 members cap to games to remind me how far we have come since then. I am going to keep wearing it until I can put on a new members cap following our next premiership year.

I like going to aflphotos.com.au. I go there after every game for a "Photo of the Week" for the Joel Patfull and Justin Clarke fan club. If I can't find something there, I go to zimbio.com (where they have a lot of Ressies photos too, I'll have to get some links for you guys). Wow, it says we will be 17th behind Melbourne and GWS. This is bloody pathetic. From nearly getting into the 8 to 17th behind those clubs is ridiculous. I can't take it seriously, hopefully noone in the AFL does either, but it will probably just reaffirm what they think of us.

I hope the AFL do take it seriously, actually. Nothing better than having teams underestimate the Lions' abilities. It happened to us against the Bulldogs in Round 1 last year, in happened to Geelong against us in Round 13, etc etc.
What matters is ladder position, not what Jon Ralph or some mouthbreathing numpty on The Roar thinks preseason.
Classic military strategy.
