I'm getting a bit Veruca Salt up in here.

I was hoping you meant the band.

Demetriou said the best way for the Lions to turn things around was by winning on the field.
"It hasn't been discussed, hasn't been approached," Demetriou said of a possible retention allowance.
"That was disappointing … you don't want to see an exodus of players of that talent.
"Once you start winning games, players don't want to leave. They want to be part of success.
"We didn't see many players leaving Brisbane when they won premierships."
He said giving both the Lions and Gold Coast first choice of players from their respective academies would help build lists with a higher percentage of Queensland players.
"I've got a lot of confidence the Brisbane Lions can turn it around … but it's going to take time," Demetriou said.
"They're going to find it hard in the first 12 months of this turnaround, because every other club's got their foot on the pedal as well."

So the way in which we can retain players is by winning games.

Which of course we can't do if we can't retain players.

But it's all good because we don't need a retention allowance, because we didn't lose players when we were winning premierships. When we had a retention allowance.

We didn't lose Des Headland, Matthew Clarke, Shane O'Bree, Jason Gram, Richard Hadley, Ben Robbins, Craig Bolton and Brett Voss, for example,.

So clearly the only reason we lose players is because we are losing. And we won't lose players when we stop losing. And presumably the players we did lose when we were losing will miraculously return. When we start winning with the players we lost when we were losing.

But this is the bit that really makes my blood boil...

It hasn't been discussed, hasn't been approached

Why the hell not? What in the wide world is wrong with our club that even when we desperately need support, and we have strong evidence to make a case for getting specific support, related to the geographic disadvantage we have, do we not take that opportunity to push for it?

Blame Sydney I reckon. Their recruitment of Buddy on the back of Tippett the year before was a massive middle finger to the rest of the league and the absolute deathknell to any frontier club (outside of new expansion teams) getting salary cap assistance ever again.

We used our retention allowance for retention. Sydney used their cap allowance to poach two star key forwards who are one of the rarest commodities in the game. They've screwed it up for all of us and I hope the Buddy deal blows up in their faces in a big way.

Do we take everything Demetriou says as gospel these days? I don't.

You don't have to take every word he says as gospel, CJ. Is there any reason to think he's blithely lying about this? Why would he even bother?

Sadly, sheer unadulterated incompetence has become pretty much par for the course for our club over the last few years, and while I hope for better I don't expect anything else.

But we'll see. Maybe the club will contradict him in the next few days.

Well...

A DEFIANT Andrew Demetriou last night declared tanking had never taken place in the AFL.

I hope Buddy makes Bradshaw look like steal of the decade.

I would NEVER wish injury on anyone. Ever.

Besides, it would be 100 times funnier if Buddy just turned out to be incompetent away from Hawthorn. After about 10 games of 3-4 possessions a game and maybe 1 or 2 goals to his name half way through the season I would be roaring with laughter.

Shifts the blame to the club. Takes the heat off the AFL. Allows them to paint a narrative that doesn't portray them as ****ing up.

The AFL simply just has no ****ing idea about equalisation. Just want to make the big clubs who do poorly do well. They have no interest in Brisbane any more with Gold Coast in the competition. Reckon we should boycott Rd1 and say up yours to the AFL. Doubt they'd even notice though..

Yeah, you're right. It was a dumb comment.

Maybe I'm just too negative, but I really don't think we've raised this. I really don't. I think we just might be that hopeless.

Maybe I'm just too negative, but I really don't think we've raised this.

I tend to think any failure by us to raise it is probably caused by either (a) a sense of futility about the answer; or (b) a desire not to upset AFL House even privately.

Neither is a good excuse, if indeed that it is true.

I am not convinced that we absolutely need a retention allowance. But I object to having struggled through the last few years as the only frontier club without one.

In my mind, I'd rather see the AFL spend a bucketload more money on code promotion and junior development in Qld. I feel like we do way too much heavy lifting in terms of promotion. AFL need to invest more locally to get people to come to our games.

Agree with this totally. It deserves more than a "like"

Nobody should get any extra in the salary cap, including expansion clubs. It's a joke.

Queensland is a tropical paradise, there shouldn't be any major issues with player retention.

This coming from a Crows supporter who has suffered the loss of many key players to poachers in the last few years, and I don't blame anyone but the club and the players themselves.
