IF...
Damien Barrett Shmarret want's to re-emerge from the top of my Ignore list to be considered an opinion worth hearing

THEN...
He'll give up on the Lion bagging every single week.

oh BTW Damien just a question ... you do understand the difference between "a tagger" and "a classic head-to-head" of the two best players don't you... just wondering.

Rocky won that round in case you were wondering Damien...lesson two next week.

Meh

The whole concept of that piece is flawed. It leaves Barrett stretching for something to say about every team every week. His 'If' intro is pretty much the same as it was last time he wrote one of these - 'If the Lions want to re-emerge as a contender' and 'If the Lions are serious about re-emerging as a contender'.

I think there's a pretty high likelihood he didn't watch our game. I reckon there's a surprisingly small number of AFL journos who genuinely sit down and watch every match.

You'd think it would be a pre-requisite for those who take their craft seriously right? 9 games, approx 2 hours each assuming they get recordings with the breaks removed.

18 hours homework during the week (which realistically would be less considering they would have attended/called a couple of the games live). Not a huge time sink to actually be informed at what you do but it is clear that so few of them do it. The AFL media has so much scope for improvement to get to the level of expertise you see in the NBA and NFL.

Absolutely. The sad reality is that the successful journalists in almost every field are the self-promoters rather than the subject matter experts.

The really good amateurs who write one or two columns a week are the ones you want to pay attention to.

The lack of actually watching AFL games by journalists is something I find fundamentally strange. I pay a bit of attention to the NFL and the attitude there seems to be to not take someone seriously if they don't watch the games, and in addition many watch the games multiple times. It's almost a point of honour. (And then there's Skip Bayliss.)

Yep, 16 NFL games in a given week*, so obviously they don't watch them all, but you can bet if they are calling a game the next weekend, the good commentators will have watched both teams' previous games at least once but more than likely multiple times to really look at the various elements, e.g. the line of scrimmage, the pass/ground game, special teams etc.

The result... genuine insight and analysis rather than reactive "oh boy wowee he went hard at that contest didn't he" obvious stuff that anyone watching can conclude on their own.

*EDIT: forgot the byes. but you get my point.

I was more thinking of written journalism rather than the commentators, but that's true too. Admittedly I get most of my NFL news from the NFL and ESPN, so both are somewhat higher quality and more dedicated than non-sports focused news agencies.

I wonder if that's why they had Roos commentating a lot of the Syd games and Lynch commentates quite a few of the Bris/GC games. More insight or so the theory goes.

Lynch commentates on most Brisbane games because WE'RE ONLY EVER ON ****ING FOXTEL!!!

And study lots of tape to break down the key plays, sport journalists are much more proffesional in the US. it also why you see more respected female journalists, the ability to work, think and analyse is rightly respected above having played the game.

The only two I know who have said (and, in my opinion, proven) that they do are Anthony Hudson and Robbo. Completely agree that they all should be doing it.

You can tell as well.

It just boggles the mind that in a nation of sports nuts we can't produce a few genuinely good journalists when the US manages it across multiple sports with ease. We're so far off something like Grantland.

Absolutely agree with the premise, and certainly as a poster here the tactical analyses both individually and collectively is something I find genuinely interesting. However, I feel the very nature of American Football has lent itself to such analysis over a longer period of time. Yes AFL has tactics, tactics which have progressed quite markedly over the past 25 or so years, but I think the more dynamic nature of play opens an invitation for the bland 'ooh good hit, he went hard there' comments. Not that that's how it should be. One area I certainly think greater analysis by broadcasters can be made is in stoppage and 'dead ball' situations. I guess right now it's all about Mabo the vibe.

How will they look at the Dustin Martin Situation ?

Intentional contact
High Contact
Striking
off the ball

8-9 weeks ?
Reduced to a reprimand as the MRP are scared of his tattoos

Running out of battery life due to BigFooty

Brisbane Lions inability to field anywhere near our best 22 players on any given week.
Injury and suspension seem to haunt us, determined to **** every season as punishment for **** knows what.

The weather. If the match tomorrow is played under the conditions that are today the AFL should have their ****ing arse kicked from here to eternity for the sheer ****ing idiocy of having a game start at midday in the middle of summer.
Forget the complete nonsense that it is autumn. There are only 2 seasons in Brisbane. Very hot and very warm. The odd cold day does not cut it. If they insist on midday starts in tropical Brisbane MAKE IT IN THE MIDDLE OF JUNE YOU MORONIC CRETINS!

Yours with out kind regards John (who is suffering heat stress)

Six day turnaround before the QClash after playing in a sauna. The AFL just keeps bearing gifts for us don't they.

Yeah, but the Suns are travelling back from West Australia.

Balances this one out.
