The WACA - Downfall

It doesn’t look like much has happened since the last update in June. When does construction of the new stand start?

There's never been a plan for a new grandstand, it's merely a pavilion.

It's all caught up in the shitfight over the pool and other stuff, I think (and the internal shitfight...)

They want the world but they want somebody else to pay for it.

I think the previous redevelopment of the early 2000s was regrettable and short-sighted.

What they probably needed to do was to somehow expand the Prindiville stand to replace the old stands that were knocked down and even the Inverarity Stand (the towers would have been the bigger issue to work around), in theory either increasing the corporate areas and/or improving capacity to somewhere near 30K which would be more than adequate for most cricket in Perth these days.

Problem is that it's in a shit location, and increasing the capacity would have compounded the problem.

Knock it down and increase the track distance at Gloucester Park.

If they'd done something like this from the start, and built the Perth stadium at the WACA
then you might've saved an amount approaching $1 billion.

100% correct

Should make it into something akin to AB Field or Junction Oval, imo. A small grandstand, and grass and trees everywhere else. Perfect for Shield and ODD cricket and WBBL, with BBL and all international games at the vastly superior Optus.

All games above 25k attendance otherwise it's unprofitable.

Should of been redeveloped to host all Test Cricket, All womens cricket, WAFL football and WAFL finals. 30k capacity.

As it is now and what is being done it should be knocked over.

Knock it over and call the new stadium the WACA. Yankee stadium did that.

This discussion demonstrates how Perth is missing that mid sized stadium. One with 30,000 capacity that would be good for hosting International Test Cricket, WAFL Grand Final and even the BBL as their crowds are not as big as they used to be.

The issue is that Perth doesn’t have enough events to make such a mid sized stadium viable.

Adelaide would be in a similar situation. Luckily for them, the SANFL GF get large enough crowds to make Adelaide Oval a suitable venue.

We say games with crowds below 25,000 are not profitable at Perth Stadium, and yet Australia just played at the MCG in front of 10,000. And Victoria play their state cricket games there with smaller crowds.

Though that is a different set up with how the MCC take memberships and control the ground.

Victoria play at the MCG two or three times a year, and that's it.

Perth Stadium runs the show and charges per use which is a lot because of the huge resources required.
The MCC can do what ever they like.

In a side story, the Perth Stadium was quoted as saying how much a money-spinner the new stadium was
and was encouraging Hobart to build the biggest and best to reap the rewards.

Something doesn't add up there as government were saying that they had to charge AFL $500,000 a game.
Also this article kept on saying that the AFL didn't contribute much to the Perth Stadium implying it should do so for Tasmania.
BUT it completely ignores the fact that the federal government didn't expend one cent on the new Perth Stadium
whilst basically funding a lot of other stadia around Australia.

It's a real shame that apartment development fell through a few years ago. The WACA could've stood on it's own 2 feet and controlled it's own destiny and ground and not have to pay to play at Perth Stadium.

As long as the cricket crowds remained boutique.

Could've cut a much cheaper deal to pay for the drop in capabilities for Ashes games and India games and had the rest at the WACA

You cannot have it both ways - either be happy with your own little stadium or pay for the best.
Imagine the power of the WACA if they had allowed the super stadium to be built there.
They would have had the facilities, the capacity and probably the control like the MCC.

Wait, was it a possibility that the stadium could've been built there?

Not really.

The Langoulant Report recommended either Mueller Park in Subi or the East Perth Power Station site. It also recommended downgrading the WACA to 10,000 capacity and domestic matches only.

Obviously, Barnett came over the top and made it Burswood (which from memory was considered but rejected by Langoulant), meaning upgrading the WACA was theoretically possible. Still, I don't remember it being considered for an upgrade, not even half-seriously.

After the WACA ruled out building the super stadium on their lease.
Probably because they were flushed with the apartments idea.

Yes, spend big on a report only to dismiss it completely.

Still, I don't remember it being considered for an upgrade, not even half-seriously.

Well considering the outlay on the new stadium and the money it could have saved by using the WACA
the W.A. government was going to be anything but sympathetic to the WACA.
It was only the idea of a multi-purpose WACA that drew funding ideas.
