The WACA - Downfall

Imagine if instead, the WACA Ground and Wellington Square got swapped for purposes.

Yes, Mciver station is even closer.
But going further back they missed out on the entertainment site when offered.

Oh well. Maybe in 30 years time there will be another opportunity.

No.

Fancy lights in support of a cricket match in the next suburb. Never change, WACA, never change.

In other news, the development is currently listed to be complete in 2025. I'll believe it when I see it.

To be fair it looks pretty cool. Was at the Casino Friday night and Optus Stadium last night and you could clearly make out the word “scorchers“ on each light tower as it flashed thru each letter of the word - and both of those venues are quite a distance away.

I can’t help but think that Perth has missed an opportunity, now that the WACA Ground is being redeveloped, and Wellington Square got an upgrade.

Imagine if instead, the WACA Ground and Wellington Square got swapped for purposes.

So the WACA Ground got demolished and turned into an inner city park. And Wellington Square had a multi-purpose footy cricket field to replace the WACA.

Wellington Square is a similar distance to Perth Station as both Perth Arena and Perth a Rectangle Stadium, but each in different directions.

It is also a similar distance to Claisebrook Station as Perth Rectangle Stadium, which will be served by the Armadale, Thornlie, Midland, Airport and Ellenbrook railways, and Fremantle as trains run through Perth Station.

It would still be close to the East Perth hotel precinct, but be closer to the Northbridge entertainment area. And would also put the field more central to more car parks.

All of which would make it easier to disperse crowds after events, but also be more accessible.

God no. Walking around that area, it's already poorly accessed and too close to St George's Terrace. Wouldn't work. Businesses and apartments around East Perth are tight for room,
There was talks of just knocking down Perth Convetion Centre, as it's an eyesore and serve hardly any purposed and try and develop a rectangular stadium with room for a cricket ground. Not sure about if that ever got further along. Good location to have.

Wut? The convention centre is unquestionably an eyesore but it's hardly a white elephant. It's gets a lot of use.

But even if it gets demolished there is zero chance they're going to put a stadium there.

It doesn't have a single window overlooking the river- unbelievable.
but it's hardly a white elephant.

It certainly didn't attract the conventions it was supposed to.

Just not enough footprint and no need for a stadium now.

I really think the WAFL Grand final should be at the WACA going forward

Usually WAFL Grand finals days get about 25k rocking up, 25k at the WACA will look a lot better and make a better atmosphere at a full WACA than a half full Optus stadium, will be cheaper for the WAFL too.

Who's going to pay for the deconstruction of the WACA.?
For patrons there's no comparison between the WACA and Optus Stadium.
If the WACA was the SCG it would have been pulled down decades ago.

Who is going to the public grand opening day on 1/3? Would love to see some pictures. Hard to find any yet of the finished redevelopment. So capacity has been reduced a fair bit by the sounds. That’s a shame but probably ok for what it’ll be used for
