I guess I'm saying it's not recruiting but development that's been the problem. We're picking capable footballers, just not turning them into good ones.

There it is again... IMO the main reason why we have stunk it up over the past 5 - 10 years.

It is said that Wallace was "a good game day coach"... personally I'm not sure but even if he was I reckon he was not a great developer of men.
Perhaps he was a good tactician and analyst & perhaps Spud was a motivator of men but neither strike me as being great 'teachers of men'.

Perhaps my memmory has faded but I don't recall either 'doing a Hardwick' and sending a 'capable' player back to the 2's for a prolonged period with firm instructions on areas to work and improve on.

No doubt drafting has a bit to do with it as well but I have little doubt we did not get the best out of a number of our players.

our recruiting department a few years back was effectively 2 part timers.

Mostly francis jackson, with greg miller chipping in when his myriad of other jobs allowed. Fj only started in '05, so would still have been building his contact network ( vital in recruiting ) and like anyone new in a job, would have had trouble standing up to his boss.

If memory serves, going into the last draft, we had 3 full timers ( francis jackson + 2 assistants ), plus craig cameron ( probably less involved than gm was, but he'd still have plenty of contacts out there ).

Inevitably, we will be seing more players now (and more of them), and will be able to spend a lot of time analyzing video of them, talking to their coaches, family, etc about what they're like, etc etc etc. We'll still make mistakes, but there will be far fewer.

Further, when we've got them in, we've got a bigger team working on developing these players.

Inevitably, we will do better as a result.

Yes, part of this can be blamed on the salaries of wallet/miller, but mostly the expansion in on field staff has come from the board/ceo getting the finances in order....it wont really flow through for 3-5 years, but they're the ones truely responsible for getting us back on track.

Was listening to an interview with Terry Wallace a couple of weeks ago on SEN and I gotta say I feel sorry for him.

He's more responsible for the positive direction your club is heading in than many if not ALL of you realise. He walked into what can only be described as a train wreck (putting it mildly), and had to do his best to turn it around. All with an administration that didn't want to spend any money.

One example? It was Terry Wallace who came in and laid down the law with the inept recruiting staff upon his arrival "No more trading of first round draft picks".

Before Terry got there, you guys had traded pretty much every first round pick you'd had for something like 2-4 years. That KILLS a club long term, and Terry suffered for it. Now Damian Hardwick (whom I think is a great coach and wanted to replace Mick with) will now gain extra benefit from Terry's sacrifice.
