The war against renewable energy

Nut, energy vault is a scam with major legal issues which will not doubt lead to criminal and civil remedies

let's see how this plays out in the courts

It's a scam dude. There's a LOT of them going around at the moment.

I don't know if you actually care enough to allow yourself to be challenged, or if you have weirdly tied your identity to this idea, but this video runs through why it's not viable.

I got a few minutes in and they say over and over is that they havnt built one yet.

Does it get any better?

Its a concept i saw come out a couple of years ago. Theres small prototypers in service. The next step is to build a full size one. This doesnt happen overnight people want to see how the b prototypes go over time before they spend big money on a potential white elephant.

Is there any form of energy generation that doesnt have lawsuits against it.

legal matters is very different to fraud
civil is also very different to criminal

why are the examples being presented as beacons of hope in the renewable sector, the ones with criminal issues and fraud?

Yes. Theres a lot of substance to it. You can fast forward to about 2.5 mins in. Also fast forward when he starts talking about a Japanese battleship.

So as a concept it does work; no ones saying it doesnt. And in the years since this video was made they've made working versions with the money they've raised. However the physics is still the same. It's incredibly unviable due to costs, complexity, weather and capacity.

You could technically power a city by connecting the grid to enough Peleton bikes; but that doesnt make it a viable technology.

Cranes arent complex
As its not complex it isnt expensive
Weather is an issue that can be allowed for with rails.
Capacity? Errrr …. Wotmate?

Uh, yeah it's all those things. Adding rails will further explode cost, complexity and LIMIT capacity.

With a crane in theory you can place blocks on the ground in a radius, without stacking them like the energy vault bizarrely insists on. Meaning each brick has the potential energy of its height.

You put them on rails then you're locking in stacking. Meaning each brick can only fall the distance to the brick below it. A 100 meter tall tower runs out of energy after 50 meters.

Theres just no way this thing will ever operate with any meaningful capacity or for any meaningful time. If you believe otherwise then sorry, you're just another sucker.

Here is an example of why there is more to renewables than the cost of generation:

Like many people, she recently received notice that her electricity bill will be going up.

The usage component of her bill is only going up a few cents, but the fixed rate part — the daily supply charge — is going up 43 per cent.

"I understand everyone is getting a price increase," she said, "but it just feels a little bit unfair that they've put so much on the daily rate.

"I can't reduce my electricity consumption to reduce the daily rate."

'Veteran energy executive Frank Calabria isn’t trying to sugar coat it. Australia needs to get a move on with planning the gritty logistics of the renewables revolution if we want to keep the lights on.
And with the debate in Canberra quickly moving on from emissions reduction targets, the Origin Energy chief says the challenge now is to get the infrastructure in place to get the power grid ready. That’s still going to be some time away, but for now we need to make sure firm reliable generation is in place until such a time that it’s not needed.'

'He points to June’s east coast energy crisis as a wake-up call for everyone that all of the major players – including regulators and the government – need to come together to start navigating the rocky shift to green energy.'

Keeping the lights on .... why is it ignored by so many ordinary folk ?

Solar briefly overtakes coal in Australia as number one source of power nationally

What sort of fraud are you running here Jack, the believers & everyone else is a non believer?

The role of renewables in Australia is well established, see the east coast energy utensil up & the failure of State Governments. Thats not to say renewables dont have a role, it is to demonstrate the limited capacity in a 24/7 market, i.e the east coast energy market.

Your fraud Jack is a continued ignorance of the limitations of renewables in a 24/7 market, otherwise you would have a timeline to deliver not simply an aspiration.

I'm still using solar, I know its shortfalls, & I know coal & gas fill that space.

'There were some excitable headlines in mainstream media this week, from the ABC and the AFR that “Solar overtakes coal for the first time in winter”. Which would be very exciting, but is not actually the case.'*

We all know there is a reason there is no answer to the 24/7 hole in renewables as the answer to the ageing & failing coal fleet, & thanks to the failures by State Governments on the east coast, there is not enough gas for it to fill the bill & keep the lights on for all the jobs that rely on it.

This report will be very interesting when it is released this evening. The Net Zero America report is probably the most comprehensive report produced. This is Net Zero Australia, produced in conjunction with Princeton University.

Report reveals the staggering scale of Australia’s net-zero path

'Those are among the key findings of a landmark forward-looking, multi-year modelling project led by experts at the universities of Melbourne, Queensland and Princeton in the US, which for the first time details the staggering scale of the nation’s decarbonisation pathway.'

Sounds more like a promotional hand out ....

When I first read the Net Zero America report I was absolutely floored by the scale and scope of work identified. While NZA is written with an optimistic view, there is also a massive amount of analysis and detail provided. I expect NZAust to be just as detailed.

Record profit for Whitehaven Coal as global energy crisis fuels thermal coal demand

The company has posted a full-year result for the 2021–22 financial year of $3.06 billion in earnings before tax, and a net profit after tax of $2 billion.

How much tax are they paying Jack, +/- royalities ?

how many concrete blocks are required to deliver something like the equivalent of the snowy hydro?

or 20GW for two weeks?

Snowy Hydro chief executive Paul Broad has quit following revelations by The Australian the company‘s giant hydro expansion faces a $2.2bn cost blowout.
A series of cost variation claims were lodged with the government-owned Snowy Hydro by the Future Generation venture, comprising Italy’s WeBuild and Perth-based Clough, demanding a more than 40 per cent increase due to the spiralling costs.

The landmark project also faces a 18 month delay, potentially exacerbating electricity shortages in the power grid.

Mr Broad is understood to have disagreed with Energy Minister Chris Bowen at a meeting on Tuesday this week on a number of issues including Snowy’s controversial Hunter gas-fired power plant near Newcastle.

There has been no better time to be alive and to be in business. The energy transition provides for huge opportunities, for those seeking ways of doing things better.

What people need to appreciate is for every one great idea, there will be a thousand that simply don't work or don't get up.

I feel this is why there is a debate about the energy transition. Some are looking at this from the "the world is ending, coal is evil, believe the media hype and lobby groups lies, believe the science (this is an engineering issue not science)" and lose sight of reality.

The reality is it takes time to transition as inventing, developing and optimising solutions that work, then more time to commercialise those solutions that work, then to build them into an economy at a scale to make a difference takes even longer.

I don't believe there is any one on the planet that doesn't want to see things done better and that includes cleaner economies and environments. What I do feel the tension between camps is about, is the dirty politicians, lobby groups and media that make unrealistic statements and even blatant lies. but should we blame third parties or ourselves for wanting to believe so much we stop asking questions?

'If we want to replace fossil fuels with renewables, we must cut energy consumption:

Energy consumption – whether its heating your home, driving, oil refining or liquefying natural gas – is responsible for around 82% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Unless Australia reduces its energy consumption, my recent study finds it’ll be almost impossible for renewable energy to replace fossil fuels by 2050. This is what’s required to reach our net-zero emissions target.'

The article outlines 'my recent study'.

QLD approves expanded open-cut coalmine on Darling Downs
Queensland’s resources minister has approved the expansion of a coalmine on the prime agricultural land of the Darling Downs.

The proposed stage three of New Hope Group’s New Acland open-cut coalmine was described by anti-coal campaigners as something that should be met “with horror”.
