The war against renewable energy

Call me sceptical but there wasnt an energy crisis till the federal coalition went behind in the polls

Just a matter of time before the coalition are picketing the coal plant gates "Save the coal"

Weren't we supposed to be getting "Adults" in charge?
Wehn the opposition responded by holding up hands with five fingers (meaning five years in charge) our "Adult" PM said they were symbolising the muslim brotherhood WTF?

And a coalition chastising a for profit company (AGL) for prioritising profits

They're so conservative they are trashing the liberal title

They insist government back office functions compete with private enterprise. Then move the back office function to woop woop where no sensible private company would never go
He wouldn't be a conservative. Ask Turdbull. The Liberal Party isn't conservative.

peas from the same pod, pod full of pee .... players all in the game of politics ... disgraceful the lot of them !!

with batteries being the difference as in SA ?
Liddell isn't a big deal, wind and solar will fill the gap comfortably. New wind tech has similar capacity factors to that dying generator, mixed in with grid scale solar that doesn't die in the heat like old fossil fuel generators.

Can really see the taxpayer getting stung by this if the Libs get there way. The Utopia programs episodes a looking way to much like the norm

To me Liddell is just another factor in reliable power, & just as Hazelwood closed, so will Liddell & the base load is reduced. What is typical of the politicians of all colours is the use of different numbers for the power capacity of the place reinforcing my disgust with the lot of them.

No its not only 1/2 the possible sites are damed the left makes it impossible to go forward with new schemes

Apparently older facilities can have their capacity doubled with serious refurbishments. Then there's storage facilities

And a fast flowing or tidal river can do hydro. You don't need a dam

Interesting comment for a Sandgroper - the State Govts sold the power assets not the Feds, & the State Govts continue to benefit (GST) thanks to WA & Western Power not being privatised.

Don't buy this mob or the other ...

The peak load problem is mainly due to the recent proliferation of air conditioning. Which is not a bad thing

Needs new approaches to reduce its draw on the power grid, which is perfectly capable for all but a few days per year

Things like this

Sent from my iPad

I thought everyone had solar panels now? We have solar and during the warmest parts of the day, it runs the A/C without any extra electricity required.

Everyone weeps about poor old coal and oil

It will still be needed for chemical and other manufacture. The industry isn't going anywhere

Yep

Sadly places like india, china and Japan are investing way too heavily in our and there fossil fuel programs.

There's only one side of politics going against all logic mate. I have no time for either party in general but on energy only one side is going against the world. There's a reason why only a government could make a coal plant happen, it's a ******* stupid idea. There's only one lot holding the nation hostage on the behalf of their sponsors. *, the Finkel review is a giant compromise to the luddites and they still can't agree to something that is a watered down version of what every big company in the world has been factoring into investment for ******* years. It's just breathtaking corruption and stupidity.

I read this thread and feel for the youth

Not only do they have to pay off the debt from the last 10 years but will do so with lower wages and higher unemployment.

It's great for asset owners though and those going into retirement with savings. There will be loads of cheap desperate labour.

It's sad to hear people celebrate this.

What does energy have to do with this

On board with much of what you say 7ham, BUT the dud politicians are thick on the ground & not just the Libs, most of whom are not interested in whats best for Aus, let alone a hard decision.
Blaming each other confirms just how pathetic all are.
We've got less power generated since Hazelwood closed & only platitudes to replace it, not good enough.

As soon as the idiots in charge in Canberra stop getting in the way things will improve quickly. As it stands the states have had to go alone. This is a LIb/Nat problem as much as you'd like to blame everyone.

Its a Feds/State issue, witness the situation in WA.
The political leadership, lack therof across the board does nothing to resolve anything.

Maybe both sides could learn from what Sandfire Resources have done to help itself at its DeGrussa copper operation in the Pilbara:
https://www.australianmining.com.au/features/sandfire-looks-ahead-following-degrussa-success/

One of DeGrussa’s key features is an innovative solar facility, considered the world’s largest off-grid solar and battery system.

Simich explained that while the concept of using the sun to generate energy through solar panels was not new, the way it has been applied at DeGrussa was unique.

“It’s a collaborative energy system linking and communicating with the in-situ diesel powered station, together with the solar system and a back-up battery system,” Simich said.

“Having those three energy sources communicating with each other and dealing with the vagaries of weather, clouds, night time and day time, and making sure that they are all are complementary and communicating is a unique situation that’s not been done before.”

At its peak, the facility can provide up to 25 per cent of the site’s energy requirements on an annual basis. It is being used as a complementary energy source for the project as it does not run 24/7.

“The worst thing you can have in a system that requires 24/7 power is an unscheduled power shortage or dropout, so having a reliable energy source is critical,” he said.

The facility was commissioned in June 2016 and Sandfire is ramping up its efficiency. While it has been successful on a number of fronts – particularly in terms of the message it sends to the world in terms of innovation – the solar facility has still been faced several challenges.

Yes state governments and big companies are coming up with their own solutions because the Coalition have been stalling and attempting to sabotage attempts at bringing policy certainty.
