I'm still living in the alternate universe where we pick up Oscar, TK, Ryan & Sam Taylor.

Or hand over Brander in the TK trade.

Wasn't Brander another who did well in U16 then went backwards in U18? Seem to be a lot of that. Goes backwards (or doesn't play at all), and the Eagles swoop.

Why do we rate U16 form so highly?

That ruckman that seems to have fallen off the face of the earth must be paying $1.01 to be an Eagle.

Most one sided player in the comp hands down. The only trick he had was that little shimmy he use to do, and he only did that shimmy because he couldn’t kick on his left.

On reflection this was obviously ideal.

At the time, though, was it ever a serious prospect of say Brander instead of pick 18-ish heading to Geelong as part of the Kelly trade?

If we drafted Oscar then TK we may not win the 2018 flag.

I like the universe we trade Brander for TK though
i said at the time we should have drafted Kelly as our second.we didn't need both Brander and allen. The biggest mistake was thinking Brander was better then allen.Had we gone allen first then Kelly we wouldn't have wrecked our drafting in the last couple of years with the horrible kelly trade.Brander is to blame for all our problems or should i say our very short sighted recruiters.

Yep was a distaster of recruitment that trade year ended up being. Anyway we win some and we lose some. Last year though we smashed it out the park with our draft hand. All our picks look great. Hough and Bazzo will both be long term players. Chesser is the one we never got a chance to see through injury but hoping him aswell comes good.

If we hopefully get it right this year in the draft it will go along way to redeeming faith in our recruiting.
At the moment I'm not looking back as what can it do. Our recruiting knows they stuffed up royally with the Kelly draft year. We learn and move on.

I wish Brander the best though. Hopefully he can have some success in the seconds. Will be a good player for a second tier comp. Just not up to it at AFL level. Brander is one dimensional and at AFL level one dimensional players isn't enough anymore. The game requires all round athletic ability both inside contested and outside these days if you want to play midfield. Gaff and Sheed take note- Bulk up or play WAFL. We need to get both of them back to 2018 size.

I was highly dubious about the rationale for picking Brander, as we spruiked that he was the "best available" which was debatable; most of us had Oscar Allen higher anyway and we really didn't need two key forwards. Especially as we needed midfielders and Kelly was very much on the radar

Fast forward years later and we have sold the farm for Kelly, and Brander has just been delisted

The irony is, if Brander had of just bitten the bullet and knuckled down, he would still be on our list right now and would have gotten ample opportunities. I believe we offered him a 2 year contract and with our COVID/Injury list this season, he would have played every game, and likely in his preferred position as a forward

Instead, he wanted to play in the seniors without really earning his opportunities, got the sads, refused our offer, walked to GWS and is now no longer in the AFL

He reaped what he sowed, and so did we

Every club gets a first round pick wrong at some point.
True, but let’s call a spade a spade: Many of the folks on BF who do the draft predictions are very good at it and put a lot of bloody time into it.
They don’t have the same level of data that the club recruiters do, but all the same none of them from memory had Brander on the radar.

Yet.. here we are. Brander has copped two delistings in two years (one of those was his own choosing admittledly)

Here’s hoping lesson learned for the upcoming draft where we have some quality picks. Get what we actually bloody need.

Knightmare had him inside the top 20. His draft profile said he projected from 5-20
