No, I suspect the two obvious and best candidates Bomber and Williams have both relayed via their managers that because of the instability at the club they will only entertain interest with a 5 year contract. And you could not blame them - another unintended legacy of a stupid administrations premature and messy sacking of Macca

Of course the club and board due to our finances would feel that a 5 year deal is like relinquishing all reins to bomber/Williams
So they are looking around for an inspiration a miracle amongst the bridesmaids.

Unfortunately, they also know bomber and Williams pay for themselves with membership, sponsorship and attendance numbers

So this is really all about ego. They don't want to relinquish their power

Welcome to the post Macca self inflicted hangover. In a way its perfect
Peter Gordon must know these unknown coaches will impact membership and sponsorship and attendance badly after the off season we have just had.

But giving up control and power to these great coaches but ego maniacs does not sit well

Round and round we go

If Thompson wanted to coach us I would give him 5 years in a heartbeat

Yes I would too
But I really suspect our board is not comfortable with it
With our normal running to the bone finances, a 5 year contract gives the incoming coach 3 years of total control. The club simply could never contemplate paying the contract out.
I think it is exactly what we need and I can't see Williams or bomber not wanting to pursue discussions further on those terms.
They know we have a very promising list but huge dysfunction within the club - their reluctance would be entirely the board, management and support infrastructure. Only a long term contract would make them comfortable that the support would be forthcoming.

Bomber wasn't the right guy for us lads. Just the way it is. Not the man to lead a young squad.

I have no idea if we spoke with ratten and Williams or not, nor whether they were interviewed.

I'm expecting an announcement later this week.

Whilst I like bomber I concede he often appears odd like he has a substance issue
But to then not consider Williams - I don't get it
With all due respect to Beveridge - Williams is the right option for our club.

I read that Beveridge was Collingwood's Development coach at one stage, which suggests he's good with the younger players.
BMac also had the reputation of being a good developer of young players.....probably the big difference is Beveridge played VFL/AFL while BMac did not.

Again, how do we know that Williams wasn't approached or that he applied?? Maybe he had no interest in the job at all? I have no idea.

Neither bomber or Williams will coach our club. Not the right fit. Both are on the wrong side of loopy and I think it would be a seriously bad move by the club. There is a reason why Williams has not got another gig.

The drink has reached 4 grand finals and a prelim in his 5 years at afl level. I have no idea if he can coach, but they're pretty reasonable results for him to be attached to. Can't be a muppet.

How confident are you of him landing it? not asking for the source, but hypothetically the markets were still open, which they aren't, would you splash on it?

One thing about all these coaches who have been in a good system or finals teams. Do they know how to work with a rebuilding team with systems that may not be up to scratch.

Just because someone has been with a gun team, doesn't make them the best. I don't have a good feeling about this coach appointment. Should of went harder for best available... and that was rocket.

The culture is different in AFL.

It's not like the NBA where a coach that had been fired can then be re hired a few years later (eg: Mike Brown - Cleveland Cavs).

There's the assumption that Rocket would say YES as well if the dogs went "hard". If he said no.....then where does that leave the dogs?
