I agree with you all. I'd be interested to see the breakdown on a game by game basis and see if the gradual improvement/development in players like Macrae, Stringer, Hrovat, Hunter, Stevens, Smith starts to become evident. You could, potentially, make an argument that the lack of experience in these guys will make it worse, but it will be interesting to see over the course of the year.

Another interesting stat would be to see whether the numbers improve when Gia is on the field, directing traffic and marshalling the F50...

And just continuing the X theme for a minute, when Boyd, Cross, Picken, Wallis and Libba were all in the midfield mix over the last 12 months there was almost a complete absence of X. We needed the draft of 2012 like few others. One more wouldn't hurt either.

Agree - I've been arguing the balance in the midfield for some time, so I'm pleased to see the improvement.

Although I've also been amazed by Super Griff this year.... :D

Griff has been very good this year. I've always had slight question marks on his and Cooney's decision making as distinct from their natural talent. It's the decision making and execution in that part of the ground that we need depth to and the 2012 draft will do a lot to address that IMO but it won't happen overnight.

There is an effective clearance chart in that article. It's in percentages though, so you would have to do some math to work out if we're still high in totals.
Yeah I'm not too good with maths  but I do know that regardless of stats great sides just find a way to win with clever ball use. Scarletts little foot tap to abblett dying minutes of 2009 GF... was that a stat ??? but it was clever.
I think we're slowly including the type of players that will give us this in time.

If you McCartney lovers out here keep persisting in thinking that this bloke can coach, then I am on the planet Mars. Fair dinkum after watching the first half rubbish from the Bulldogs makes me want to spew! Jones should have been dropped about 5 games ago, he is absolutely useless, mind you he has a few mates, Cordy is the biggest twit to ever play this game, he cannot play, I am tired of watching this bloke who is 7 foot tall, being out bumped, out played by smaller players, he has no guts, no desire for the game at all. McCartney has no game plan, no effing idea of how to be a senior coach, if this club persists with him, we will finish on the bottom in 2014. McCartney has got to go, if Gordon has the club at heart as he keeps telling us, then be bold and sack this bloke. This team is the worst football team I have ever seen at Footscray. And don't give us the young players excuse, all teams have young players. If anyone had of watched Port Adelaide today, then you would have seen a team play with desire, hell bent of winning the ball, and we beat them a few weeks ago, and we beat them with running, and persistence, under McCartney all hope is gone, and if they lose tonight, the Giants will win their first game next week, surely that will mean the end of this bloke as coach.

Don't sit on the fence, tell us what you really think.

And nice to see you after a few week hiatus following the Saints and Port games...

Sack him and sack him NOW!!

He is simply no good and every week he status is another week we go backwards.

He has now had over 18 months and we are no better in any category than we were when he took over.

We have awful skills
We are not fit enough
We have no visible game plan
We have no forward structure
We have not developed at any rate
We are now being embarrassed bye Melbourne

I hear alot of dog fans saying have patience well that's rubbish! How much patience??

McCartney does not provide any passion and has the personality of a post. How can a coach ask his players to play with passion when he shows none. He talks a great game but he has not taken us forward In anyway and u believe that if he is resigned he could go down as the coach who ruined out club and sent us down the fitzroy path.

If he stays we will be going cap in have to the AFL In 3 years just as Melbourne have.

The same as I do now.

Thankful my club isn't Melbourne and into an eighth year of rebuild with two coaches down and still the worst team in the comp.

Realistic that we were perennial finalists who almost cracked the big one but fell short, the crux of those sides now either having retired or retiring meaning we have a glut of kids all starting out at once.

Optimistic that once these kids get 40-50 games together the upward curve will kick in and away we go - like we did in 2005 after a couple of shithouse years.

We are GOING to cop many, many more hidings on the way. You can take that to the bank.

Sacking the coach is not the answer.

Now what do you think?

Sack him NOW so we can get a real coach and start undoing the mess this idiot has put us in

We have a poor list which can't be blamed on McCartney, but gosh his match day tactics really need to improve. I can't figure out what he's doing with team selection as well, unbalanced side.

He has been awful for 3 weeks in a row

Against the pies he starting a negative chipping game against a team that loves to press up so he might as well have just passed it to the pies players straight away
The tigers again he played negative and wide when Richmond love to run thru the middle
Tonite in every aspect was awful and proves he simply isn't up to it

Make him the VFL coach for next year so we don't have to pay him out and go get a real coach that can develop the kids we have and at least make us competitive

Can't be blamed on McCartney at all??

We have no forward line but still they recruit McCrae and hrovat instead of going for targets

He gets a 29 year old goodes who is only taking up a space for a kid regardless if he has been ok

He gets Lower who is a pure tagged when we already had one of the best in the league in picken

He has played Murph and Cooney completely out of position

He plays Dalhouse, hrovat, Libba and smith in the same team and try are all under 5 foot 10

He said from day one he will work on defensive footy and we are the worse defensive team in the league

He said he will not play guys who won't have a crack but week in week out he plays the bloody fairies Higgins and Gia who wouldn't know what a hard ball get was if you showed them a video if it

Tactically weak
Positionally weak
No passion
No personality

Where does it end

We made a mistake(which should have been obvious because Coaching ocean grove is no path to AFL) so let's not make it worse, admit it NOW AND MOVE ON

Dalhouse has gone backwards, Jones will be playing for Williamstown next week, Cordy finally took a mark in the last quarter, Prudden escapes me, haven't seen him play as yet, yes we do have some good kids coming along, but not all of them are that good, Cordy and Jones are not up to AFL standard, time for Jones to start playing at VFL level and get some kicks, and to learn how to contest, his defensive skills are nil. The Bulldogs got close to Melbourne, because for 15 minutes they got a sniff, and even with 1.43 left, when the ball was booted forward where was Cordy, behind 2 Melbourne players. And I predict that the Giants will win their first game next week, so where does that leave our super coach????

Hello, Bill Shorten here.

I have been agonising over this all night, and now feel that the correct person to coach the Western Bulldogs is... someone other than Brendan Macartney.

Is Julia Gillard available?

That was worse than I even imagined the worst result could be tonight. If we lose next week, I think there is only one option, as much as I can't believe it...

Higgins I will agree with you, but you cannot call Gia a fairy, what absolute rot! Gia has kept this team in the hunt for their wins and played a pivotal role in their last quarter comeback. And I agree with you about McCartney, have said it for 2 years, he is a great development coach, but he is plainly out of his depth as a Senior Coach. He must go at the end of this season. If he stays, be prepared for more pain!

6 / 10 for B.Mac you have got to be joking. I would give him a 2/10 for his painful years he has been and I will use the word loosely "coaching" this club. At least with Eade he had a few tactics, and a plan A and B, McCartney has neither. He is similar to Peter Rhode the only difference is that he speaks a bit slower. I look forward to all of you McCartney fans with your excuses at the end of the season when we finish it with 3 or 4 wins. Don't count on beating the Giants next week, they will be licking their lips at the prospect of playing the doggies next week. There is a very passionate Bulldog player coaching Werribee at the moment, bring Westy back and get some passion back at the doggies, because we need something!
