Almost certainly Australian Rules would have been primarily the sport of Western Australia, and rugby (probably league) would have been the national sport. The same applies to Fiji. Not to mention that New Zealand is as natural-resource-poor as Australia is natural-resource-rich, so political conflicts never known as it was would have been likely to say the least.

WA was always going to be part of Australia, just whether it was a territory or a state. Wellington was one of the first places Aussie rules took root, so I wouldn't dismiss the possibility that Aussie rules might have been the dominant code in NZ with presumably more interaction.
Different states already have very different economies so not agreeing with your argument there.
