Mark Richardson & Bill Valli

Valli is before my time. But Richo is a whipping boy hall of famer. I hope he doesn't read this as he'll be shocked and disappointed to learn that he's dead.

Maybe we need a whipping boy Hall of Fame? Somewhere we can turn to when we feel like ripping someone - anyone - to shreds. Past players are very much welcome.

We might even be desperate for it if the Pies inexplicably keep playing well, and the game day thread is full of peace and love.

Well, they are both very much alive, although their respective careers are well & truly buried.
Bill Valli was recruited in 1979.
Collingwood Rovers considered too slow & down on skills (compared to Carltons mosquito fleet, Hawthorn & North).
So they recruited W.A midget speedster to bolster our small man brigade.
He had just won back to back B&F at West Perth.
We thought we were getting a Barry Cable.
We got a Barry Crocker instead.

It's a sad loss, but I'm sure Hine will find us a new spud to replace him. I can't wait myself.

Doubt we'll risk waiting for the draft. Think we'll look at a FA 2022 R1 ready spud.

yeh we just have to realise that we won against the eagles last game. Things are bound to be slow. Fans are jubilant. Posters are optimistic. I always view times like these as part of a buildup to something good. Even all the positive comments about Maynie seem a bit surreal. You'd be run out of town if you posted that crap a few months ago. Things will settle down to the usual stuff.
I find the flood of positive comments on Mayne in the wake of his retirement announcement rather amusing. The same people were probably previously unmercifully sledging the man. Even if he seemed to play well, his sideways dinky little kicks, his hesitancy at disposing of the ball, as well as a lack of pace and height always justifiably earned him a thorough whipping, so that playing a good game became almost an impossibility for him. Predictably, his retirement witnessed an onslaught of well wishers and sycophants white-washing his whippable qualities and performances as they spoke glowingly of his contribution to the club. It's quite vomit worthy to witness everyone grovelling at Mayne's feet when for most of his time at the club the same supporters admitted to almost nothing positive about his contribution.

And of course, in the final analysis, we whip these players so that they can better themselves. So Chris walks off into the sunset thinking that he made a contribution to the club.....and in reality, he was an anchor. We are doing him a disservice by treating him kindly as he goes out the door. If we really wanted to do him a favour, we should be telling him to p%$# off back to WA and never darken the club's door again. And I agree that these sycophant supporters need to have a good look at themselves.

I don't recall much of Valli at all other than the fact that he was an incredible disappointment. If he played a single game, and google reveals he actually played 17, he left no impression on me whatsoever. There are few Collingwood players of that era of whom I have no memory, but Valli is one of the rare exceptions. I recall the name and the hope, but not the man or his play. He proved even more whip worthy in the following year he spent at Essendon, where he played only one game. That's what happens when you pick up an interstate player at the tail-end of his career.

He couldn’t keep up with the game, too much pressure, too quick for him (VFL).
Could not adjust…as you say, arrived too late in his career (late 20’s).

I've got vague memories of Gary Shaw being a high priced recruit whose signature we won, but was in much the same boat.

I remember bill valli. He came from perth and all I remember is that he looked very very old to me at the time and I think he was injured all the time. Neither of those things might have been true but that is what I remember when I think of that name. I also remember a bit of hype too. Actually I probably remember his name because it comes up in the media in perth from time to time. He was well thought of by the experts here, it would seem.

This thread is moving dangerously towards balanced and reasonable discussion, and away from spewing bile. Can we bring it back on track please?

Did someone mention WHE, or have we completely given up on him? I fear the latter.

Hew turns 28 next month, you get something for him now or he turns into old furniture.

The way WHE has been battered on here, he’s like a chipped and broken piece of old furniture.

But he’s stopped playing our game and has stubbornly found form on the field. I think he’s lost to this thread.☹️

Yes, cost huge money at the time.
Never lived up to the hype.
Finished up in Brisbane??
Maybe during the Ranald McDonald spending spree?

Congratulations Brodie Grundy! You are the 2021 whipping boy champion!!!!!!!!!!
An unassailable lead now with just two games remaining.
Has shown glimpses of giving a shit but his huge contract has pushed him home.
Honourable mentions to C Brown, Thomas, Noble and the ever reliable Mayne.
Brodie, you are our champion for the next six years. Enjoy the whipping to come!

Just for people who like belittling AFL players and calling them hopeless and whipping them....

Peter Wright has kicked 7 against the Dogs....lol...remember him ?

Some are making a comeback. Probably too many to mention. In fact, the whole team according to the game day thread, and the coaches too. A week is a long time in this thread.
