Both times I've watched the entire series I have not noticed any product placement whatsoever. Pretty low on my 'things to whinge about' list really :D

Generation Kill on the other hand is different, it isn't so much product placement traditionally, more putting in products that the rolling stone guy wrote about. Not on the same level as that massive Converse plug by Will Smith in Irobot.

Pretty fine line. For realism sake, characters consume like real people (brand names etc) Sopranos, Mad Men, Kath & Kim.

There wouldn't be a problem if your working with a 19th period drama. It's the ABC goddammit, it needs to be pure.:p

Re: The Wire ABC2

After about 4 weeks viewing one word comes to mind. Overrated. Its very ordinary. Hope it gets better. Sopranos shits on it in every way.

Fair enough mate, not for everyone. If I could make a suggestion, try and get through to season 3...
Season 1 is about developing the characters and story line, season 2 really starts to get into it (most people liked season 2 the least, i loved it) and season 3 is the in my mind the best season.

Re: The Wire ABC2

Agree that season 1 is probably the weakest, and season 4 for mine was one of the best series of any TV show.

Season 4 easily the best, then 2, then 3 and 5 tied, then 1... although first season was still bloody good, just not as deep as the others.

Season 2 doesn't get half the love it deserves because of the lack of gang bangers, but the way the characters and story is gradually built up throughout the season is amazing.

I've only seen the first 3 seasons, and so far S2 was easily the best IMO. Great characters and great use of those characters.

Edit: I meant Season 2, my bad

Re: The Wire ABC2

I found season 3 a bit underwhelming and REALLY liked season 2, so i'm opposite to most people. The Sobotka storyline was an amazing family tragedy and
Frank walking unknowingly to his death was one of the most chilling scenes in the show

I did watch season 3 in one day though, so it might have washed over me a bit. The best parts were Bunny Colvin/Hamsterdam and the Stringer/Avon scene on the balcony when they had both
betrayed each other

Re: The Wire ABC2

I have seen the first two seasons. Love them both. Hard to say which one was better.

Today thought I would go buy series 3. I bought series one at JB HIFI for $20. Bought series 2 from EZY DVD for $24 bucks. Anyways today went to JB HIFI hoping they would still be $20 a series.... series 3 was $56. What the **** is up with that. The price had gone up $26 in two weeks. Couldnt afford to get it.

The normal price for them is $66 a season. And they're rarely on special because JB know people love it and want to buy it.

Re: The Wire ABC2

Disagree, I think they wrapped it up perfectly and at exactly the right time.

yeah, very unlike the americans to get their timing correct with ending a show

love em both, prefer the wire, but loved sopranos as well

season 3 was my fav
but season 4 was the best

Wow $66 a season for ten episodes is a little bit over the top though.

I knew $20 for a season was a bargain, should have bought all 5 at once.

Certainly not meaning to insult your intelligence/comprehension, but I'm confident that you'd be surprised how much subtle stuff you would have missed (themes, metaphors etc.). One of the (many) great things about The Wire in my opinion is its rewatchability. I'm sure you'd get plenty out of a second (and third, and fourth, and...) viewing :thumbsu:

Agree with that although I'd place it behind S3 as well as S4.

Overated was probably a bit harsh, just disappointed because of the massive hype. But I have no intention of stopping, as its still better than 90% of the shit on the other stations. Im looking forward to seasons 2 onward.:)

Re: The Wire ABC2

Perhaps the greatest facet of The Wire IMO is how it snowballs from a narrow cops vs gangsters view in Season 1, to a holistic view capturing 6 critical players involved in 'The Game', either directly or indirectly.

Giving the viewer insight to the web of cause and effect, that is influenced by both resources and a huge dose of self-interest, is what it is all about.

It's not wart free, but when considering the bigger picture it is on my mind far and away the best Tv show ever made. I wouldn't be making big calls 4 eps in.

Re: The Wire ABC2

Excessive hype can do that, after all it is just a TV show.

You must remember that each season is basically one long episode divided into one hour chunks. The first 3-4 of each season are basically setup, gradually integrating seemingly disparate characters into the overall storyline later in the season.

Season 1 is fairly simplistic compared to the others, but it is very satisfying when it all comes together at the end of each season.

I must admit that it also helps watching each season in multiple episode chunks. When I was downloading each season I wouldn't start watching it until I had all the episodes, and watch the show in 3-4 episode stints.

Stick with it, and trust me as a massive Sopranos fan that this show is its equal.

Re: The Wire ABC2

Each to their own, but I'd only put S3 ahead of S1. It was a very good season, but was too narrowly focused like S1.

I dunno if I'd say that, the political side was introduced in S3, and it had a greater depth than the first 2 seasons in the way it examined the drug issue. I loved the way each part of the story added layers and expanded on the themes of the season. Plus it had such a great conclusion. And I can't put S5 ahead of it because of the compromises in the story forced by the reduced number of episodes.

Re: The Wire ABC2

Again I will remind people that if you like The Wire go back and watch Homicide Life On The Street. I'm enjoying The Wire, watched the first 3 seasons quickly but haven't got back to it for a couple months, I'll have to start Season 4 this weekend. But HLOTS will always be my favourite tv show.
