Yeah I was sceptical for the first few episodes but it slowly built up and it was the 2nd last episode of that first season that absolutely hooked me...the big moment of that episode is still IMO, the most gut wrenching in the entire series. After that episode I was like, yep this is as good as everyone says. There's some seriously moving stuff in the wire. It's a slow burn but no other show that I've seen has better pay off.

Finally getting around to giving this a look after hearing nothing but good things, I am 3 episodes in and TBH was that unimpressed by the 1st episode was nearly going to leave it there.

Is it likely to grow on me?
The Wire just has so many extra dimensions that other shows. By this mere nature means it takes longer to settle into. It took me 5-6 or episodes to be sure it was good and before the first season was over I knew it was unparalleled.

Apart from the characters, one thing I really like about it is it's continuity. You can watch 3 episodes in a row and not notice the episode segments. Most shows are broken into episodes and withing those containers are formulas to keep the viewer hooked for the episode. The Wire doesn't seem to do this.

Remember you were a kid and you listened to easy formulated pop music then one day you listened to Pink Floyd, or Radiohead or something and realised some of the stuff that's a bit harder to listen to is much better. That's what The Wire is.

I'm trying to get a friend to watch this but he wont unless i watch his favorite show....

Sounds like you're both going to miss out on something special. :(

This reminds me of an article I read on AV Club awhile back:http://www.avclub.com/articles/did-the-sopranos-do-more-harm-than-good-hbo-and-th,69596/

The decline of the episodic formula seems to be a common thread for many HBO/cable dramas these days, but I don't think any show ever had the same feel of continuity that The Wire accomplished.
The Wire can almost only be enjoyed with one continuous viewing, because it all melts together over time. Such a rich fabric.

I'm sorry but, what. the. ****???

You've spent about 100 hours of your life on this forum alone talking about how shit and pretentious radiohead are...

Anyway, to the poster struggling with the wire, I liken it to Dostoyevsky's crime and punishment - i struggled for about 120 pages then i literally could not put it down - even when i had to leave the house i would read it walking down the street. The wire is poetry - incredibly well written.

You did it again - you initiated conversation with me. No doubt soon you'll be boasting to people how you ignore me.

Go away you worthless scrubber.

That's a good article. Shows like The Wire are more like an extended miniseries than a TV show in the conventional sense.

It's great storytelling but in terms of episodic television, its cousin Homicide: Life On The Street is much better.

Except for the movie homicide which was poor.

Anyone know if there's a chance for a season 6, the possibilities are endless for this show.
I think Simon is on record saying that season 5 was 100% the end of those storylines.

He said he'd consider doing a prequel series but it would be impractical given the age of a lot of the actors, and which is unfortunate (but true) as I'd love to see some of the back stories like Avon's rise to the top, Daniel's when he (or at least his unit) was dirty etc.

Yeah, I've always said that if I ever saw The Wire on TV (and therefore, one episode per week) I would've hated it.

It was designed to be seen in mass consumption.

I basically watched s1 - s4 on abc2 when it was screened. Was only one ep a week. Still maintained its quality, but agree that it is better to watch in mass.

How do you return to regular TV shows once you've watched The Wire? Is it possible?

Its quiet different going back to normal telly after the wire.I thought OZ was quiet good but watched it months and months after the wire.It was kinda cool seeing some of the actors from the wire on that show.

Haven't watched OZ yet, what actors from the wire are on it,
Also speaking of the wire, anyone find Chris sidekick funny, makes me laugh every time he spoke.
