been discussed here abouts - old Aussie shows Phoenix & Janus are a great watch, very similar vibe to The Wire.

Yeah I recently watched Phoenix was very very good, series 1 moreso than series 2 but series 2 still pretty good after the first few eps.

Have got Janus to look forward to but I'm getting through Twin Peaks at the moment before watching the new series and then am planning on rewatching The Wire again. I've only watched it once but it is close to perfect television series. It is an incredibly addictive show but quite taxing. I always had Sopranos as the top of the pile of drama tv but the Wire tops it I reckon. I think I'll enjoy S2 on the second watch much more than I did the first time, I remember it being a bit jolting at first without the context of how it would all fit in and going from a cop/drug dealers show to focusing in on the docker unions

Underbelly S1 is great but you have to take it for what it is. How many really good shows has Australian commercial TV ever produced? I guess in one way it was Home and Away trying to do the Sopranos but it is a real life story that happened in our city only years earlier so that grounds the show. The characters were more charicatures but in a lot of ways weren't far from the mark for some of them (Williams' portrayal was embarrassing though)

Season 1 of Underbelly was not bad but because Nine (and Seven and Ten) shows are usually dogshit it got graded on a curve as epic. Also didn't hurt it effectively had years of free advertising before it aired.

Season 2 onwards are just crap. Drama for people who think Sam Newman or Paul Vautin are funny.

rocker_oz33 seems like we share same taste in drama. Thx for referring The Corner.

Looking for something new (old) to watch. Have you seen or heard reviews on Treme? Ray Donovan? Or perhaps something else you recommend? Cheers bud.
Homicide: Life On The Street is great (for the first couple of seasons at least).

Perhaps I'm biased due to seeing it first, but I actually think its high points are often better than The Wire - 'Three Men and Adina' is probably the best episode of television I've watched.

Didn't have to go far back in this thread to find people defending Season 2.

On only my first re-watch but it's crazy to think anybody would have to defend that season of television.

Yes it's jarring to move from the low-risers to the dockyards but considering the anti-climatic note Season 1 ends on (the Barksdale investigation being only a half-victory that upends the status quo for all involved), Season 2 needs to be about picking up the pieces and trying to find a way to move forward. In a lot of ways, Season 1 feels like a prequel for what's to come, with Season 2 working as the missing piece that connects the first season to the rest of the series. On its own it's still a riveting string of episodes with a lot of great characters too, I mean, who doesn't find Russian sex trafficking to be a compelling subplot?

Yeah it's bullshit Blue Murder is forgotten about and Underbelly is lauded from series 2 on. Have never watched Phoenix or Janus.

I see Richard Roxburgh is reprising his role as The Dodger.

My missus has never seen it - means I get to watch again from beginning to end. Yay.

Top 5 characters for mine (obviously extremely hard to pick given the amount of great, interesting and complex characters):
- Omar
- Lester
- Clay 'shieeeeeeeeit' Davis
- Stringer
- Bubbles

It's impossible to go past those 4 for me as stand outs. Then there's a whole range of characters the rung below them: Bodie, Slim Charles, Avon, Prop Joe, Nick Subotka, Rawls, Landsman, Bunny Colvin, Herc&Carver and Gus are some of my other faves.

Found myself randomly watching some of Season 2 on Boxsets Friday night

Was hooked in instantly.
Such a good show, a rewatch from start to finish on the cards I reckon
